+ CALL for artworks and new projects + Sound Art EXHIBITION | Matera 2019 IN VITRØ ~ artificial sonification introduction ~ LOXOSconcept is a non-profit cultural centre, active in the realization of artistic installations and promoting research into the aesthetic, analytical, musicological and scientific aspects of music. LOXOSconcept is project leader for the development of the cultural program for Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 with the project IN VITRØ ~ [ artificial sonification ]. “Matera is a special place, which burns in all of us thoughts and emotions. Since this harmony of life and resist, concrete example of resilience as now, Matera is a candidate in the name of the whole southern Italy, southern Europe and all the southern hemisphere, to express and represent the forgotten cultures, those who have keys and values to unlock a deeper crisis - economic, cultural, social - hence the dominant cultures cannot get out.” IN VITRØ ~ [ artificial sonification ] is a sound art project aiming at investigate the relationship between sound and silence through artistic works and labs in the city of Matera and in other areas of Basilicata. The project presented by LOXOSconcept is part of one of the main topic of the Matera 2019 cultural program, Ancient Futures. IN VITRØ is perfectly placed within the theme "Ancient Future" as it has the ambition to see the past in the future (a transfigured past, re-elaborated, re-created) and to move in an open future that offers as a welcoming structure of the past (not simply by preserving it, but by offering it to experimentation and creativity). The project, in fact, chooses identitary
places of the past such as cisterns, hypogea, castles and abbeys, to field a reflection on silence and sound not only aimed at underlining the theme of modern acoustic bombardment, but also to offer ideas for a new acoustic ecology. aims and development ~ LOXOSconcept invites artists to submit artistic projects on novel and unexplored paradigms of Sound Art. The program is open to artists who want to submit sound art works or wish to carry out experimental artworks through an artistic residency in Basilicata. The works proposed may be visual art works, performances, installations. The call is composed by TWO different categories: 1] LIVE PERFORMANCES and INSTALLATIONS | ARTWORKS a) Performances that include electronic sounds and other elements (for instance a work with a new interface, laptop, performer and interactive live video, real-time coding, laptop improvisation, etc). b) Sound Installations. This category covers sound installations/sculptures and audio-visual installations (pre-recorded or generated in real-time, interactive or not). + Works selected will be shown in the “IN VITRØ - Sound Art Exhibition”, during September 2019 in Matera and other town of Basilicata + All entries will be pre-selected by LOXOSconcept organization (artistic direction - IT), evaluated in the arrival order and according to the following criteria: aesthetics, originality, innovation, technology and quality of the presentation. The final selection panel consists in members of all project partners: ZKM (zentrum fur kunst un medientechnologie - DE), Tempo Reale (Florence - IT), CeReNeM (Centre for Research in New Music, University of Huddersfield - UK), Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Utrecht - NL), Spaziomusica (Cagliari - IT). During the exhibition in Matera (Sept 2019) all partners will be invited to participate in the program and may select artworks to show in their events/venues. Regarding CeReNeM it would be at the Electric Spring festival 2020 (http://www.electricspring.co.uk) Regarding Gaudeamus it would be at Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2020 (9-13 September - https://gaudeamus.nl) Regarding Tempo Reale it would be at Tempo Reale Festival 2020 (https://www.temporeale.it/en/) Regarding Spaziomusica it would be at Spaziomusica festival 2020 (http://www.spaziomusicaproject.com) Regarding ZKM (zentrum fur kunst un medientechnologie) - Karlsruhe (https://zkm.de/en) A fund “Travel Grant” of 2000€ in total will be available to support the participation of the selected artists to the exhibition. The organization may provide an official invitation letter to the selected artists. One live performance will be selected to open for Ryoichi Kurokawa’s concert on September 27th 2019, S. Pietro Caveoso square in Matera. LOXOSconcept will : a) organize the “IN VITRØ sound art exhibition” co-produced with Foundation Matera-Basilicata 2019;
b) provide the necessary technical equipment and professional support; c) provide many different venues for performing art; d) provide Audiovisual recording and photobook for all live performances; e) publish the “IN VITRØ exhibition and performances” catalogue; f) promote all selected artworks through partners and Matera 2019 networks; REGISTRATION RULES The call is open to artists of any nationality and age. - It is possible to submit a maximum of 2 works. Upon nomination, each candidate will be granted a residency of two weeks. Applicants should indicate the residency chosen and be careful about the specific goal and technical materials available for each location. Each selected artist will receive an artistic fee of €1000 (one thousand euros). The residency program does not cover per diem expenses for work or travel/lodging expenses. The projects realized through residencies will be exhibited in Basilicata and presented to the local community in a dedicated event. The selected artists undertake to participate in project presentation events. | ARTISTIC RESIDENCY PROGRAM 2019 | [A] Site specific Art | sound installation Venue: The “Bottini” of Irsina Irsina is a medieval walled town unspoiled by tourism that boasts a variety of valuable historical and religious monuments. Located approximately 50 km from Matera, Irsina was built around the Bradano River, which borders the regions of Basilicata and Puglia. Outside the monastery walls are the “Bottini”, which are long underground tunnels once used to supply water to the city using a high-quality hydraulic system.
TOPIC A : Sound Art installation (and other media - optional) For this call the Residency Track program is particularly interested in projects that explore the particular scenario of Bottini enhancing the relationship between the sound of water and the acoustic space. But proposals covering other themes are welcome. * Please download the material about the venue at www.in-vitro.it/artresidencies2019 For this project please consider that the humidity percentage in this venue is very high. Use of HQ active monitors, studio monitors and video projectors is not recommended. Production Period : August 2019 (Irsina - ITALY) Exhibition Period : August/September 2019 (Irsina - ITALY) [B] Live Performance | Venue: The San Michele Arcangelo Abbey The first settlements in the area date from the 7th century BC, belonging to the Apuli Italic tribe. The original nucleus of Montescaglioso grew substantially in the following centuries, thanks to trade with the nearby Greek town of Metaponto. The Benedictine Territorial Abbey (i.e. exerting diocesan authority over itself and the surrounding territory, instead of resorting under a bishop) of San Michele Arcangelo, exists at least from 1078 and was probably built in the 5th century. The Norman lord Humphrey of Hauteville and his son Rudolph made large donations to the abbey, which flourished until the 15th century.
TOPIC B : Audiovisual live performance For this call the Residency Track program is particularly interested in audiovisual and videomapping project that include electronics sound and other media. But proposals covering other themes and techniques are welcome. * Please download the material about the venue at http://www.in-vitro.it/artresidencies2019 Production Period : August 2019 (Montescaglioso - ITALY) Exhibition Period : September 2019 (Montescaglioso - ITALY) [B] Live Performance or Sound Installation Venue: “Santa Chiara Monastery” of Ferrandina Ferrandina is famous for producing the highest level of quality olive oil. Sun, stone, drought, silence and solitude: these are the five ingredients that, according to local folk traditions, create the ideal habitat for the olive tree. The town is located on a 482 metres (1,581 ft) hill in the Basento Valley on the western bank of the river Basento. Ferrandina is part of the "Collina Materana" and it is the fourth biggest town in Basilicata. Saint Chiara Monastery was built in 1688 with a tower that dominates the inner town. the monastery houses the Crucifixion by Pietro Antonio Ferro and a painting of the Immaculate Conception by Francesco Solimena. It houses many paintings from Neapolitan school and 600 century organ, a wooden choir and a marble altar.
TOPIC C : Live performance or sound installation (or multimedia) For this call the Residency Track program is particularly interested in projects that include electronics soudn and other media or sound installation or sound sculpture. But proposals covering other themes and techniques are welcome. * Please download the material about the venue at http://www.in-vitro.it/artresidencies2019 Production Period : August 2019 (Ferrandina - ITALY) Exhibition Period : August/September 2019 (Ferrandina - ITALY) Technical equipment for each residency program: Production stage: + a workstation + a pair of studio monitors + video monitor + audio controller/interface (if needed) + audio and video cables Exhibition stage: + up to #4 loudspeaker and subwoofers
+ #2 fullHD video projectors + CPU (if needed) + mixer and audio control surface + lights and controllers + audio and video cables + technical assistance Each selected artist will receive an artistic fee of €1000 (one thousand euros). The organization can write a letter of intent to facilitate the search for other funding or grants; A fund of € 1000 (one thousand euros) in total is available to buy production materials related to the art projects. PUBLICATION OF PROJECT MATERIAL AND AUTHOR’S RIGHTS All works produced/exhibited will remain the property of the artist unless otherwise stipulated by the artist him/herself; said work/s must, however be cited on occasion of any future use as co-production/s with: + Intellectual Property and Exploitation The copyright in the Artwork is and shall remain the property of the Artist. The Artist certifies that she/he is the sole author of the Artwork, that this is an original work that does not copy other preexisting works. The Artist certifies that she/he has not already accepted nor will accept during the execution of the current contract any other agreement with a similar subject. For the period starting from the date of signing of the Agreement up to 24 months from the delivery of the final outputs, Producers may use the Project Output. After the aforementioned period of 24 months, Producers will have the right to use and exploit the Project Outputs and, in general, the Project for any wider purpose, commercial or not, without prejudice to the right to use and exploit the Project Outputs and, in general, the Project for any institutional scope. Artist undertakes, acknowledges and expressly accepts that Output Project may be freely used by any third party in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth in Creative Commons Licenses; Producers in any capacity have and will have, for the duration of legal protection, any broader right to grant Creative Commons Licenses. + Publicity All Parties and their mandated third parties shall include on each publication or communication (print and/or multimedia) mentions and logos of the Producers. The Artist shall furnish current photographs, an up-to-date biography, and other materials necessary for the advertising and promotion of the performance requested by the Producers. The Producers will record the performance for archive purpose and will provide the artist with a copy of this recording. The artist may not use this material for commercial distribution. Non-commercial distribution requires the consent of the Producers. The Artist agrees that Producers has the right to record his/her service on any audio and/or video support for: - the multimedia library archives of Producers. - for any thematic or retrospective exhibit organized by the Producers and/or its partners - online use: one excerpt under 3 minutes long for a summary video Artist grant to Producers the right to take pictures or have pictures made during the working sessions (rehearsals, dress rehearsals but not at the concert) of themselves, composers, and generally speaking of all the members of the technical teams. Artist also grant Producers the right to shoot or have shooting done of all or some part of the working sessions (rehearsal, dress rehearsal, and/or concert) showing artists, composers, and generally speaking all the members of the technical teams. These images and videos may be used for marketing and advertising purposes, on website and social pages, as well as for any retrospective event produced by the Producers or by one of its partners. This permission is given for the legal term of copyrights according to current or future law, including possible extensions that could be lengthen this term. it is applicable worldwide. any other commercial use will be subject to an additional agreement. Artist undertakes to give tv/radio interviews and authorizes recordings to be made during the performance for news and magazine programs. the duration of these recordings shall not exceed three minutes. These marketing activities in which the artists' image may be used do not entitle the artist to further remuneration. LICENCES COPYRIGHT AND PERMISSIONS 1. By compiling the registration form, the participant unconditionally accepts and agrees to these regulations. 2. Submitting author accept to become associate member of LOXOSconcept. LOXOSconcept is a no profit association and the call is open only for members. The entry fee is considered as a membership fee (associate member - 2019). Personal data will be not disclosed to any third party. 3. While participants maintain ownership of submitted material, by participating they concede the right to the Festival to utilise said material free of charge for purposes of communication and promotion, including the publication, duplication and/or reproduction of submitted material on CD/ DVD/CD-ROM or via the official website. 4. Registration by participants attests to the originality of the work/composition. 5. The personal data supplied by the artists will be treated in accordance with Law 675/96 (“Privacy Policy”), the Legislative Decree n. 196/2003 (“Privacy Code”) and the art.13 Regulation EU 2016/679 (G.D.P.R), even for inclusion in databases operated by the LOXOSconcept cultural association. Any television, radio, recordings, and broadcasts of the works participating in the award for the promotion of the artists or the festival itself through marketing and communication are authorised by the artist without any additional obligation for the organization and without prior request of consent from the artist. 6. The award is regulated by the brief published on the official website www.in-vitro.it 7. The LOXOSconcept association reserves the right to make changes to the competition announcement if and when necessary.
