Country To Coast! Adelaide / Barossa Valley / Murray Lands / Great Ocean Road / Melbourne 11 Days / 10 Nights Tour Departs: Monday 14 September - Thursday 24 September 2020 Day 1. Mon 14 Sept: Brisbane - Adelaide Dinner We begin this morning at to the Brisbane Airport where we will board our flight to Adelaide. VA1394 Brisbane 1310 - Adelaide 1530 After our flight we are met by our local coach captain and enjoy a sight seeing tour of Glenelg and Adelaide the city of churches. We then make our way into the heart of Adelaide to our accommodation for check in before meeting up for dinner in our hotel this evening. Overnight Adelaide: Hotel Grand Chancellor Day 2. Tue 15 Sept: Adelaide - Barossa Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner This morning before departing Adelaide we visit St. Peters Cathedral. The church finished completion in 1904 more than 30 years after it’s foundation stone was first laid in 1869. The towers and spires were built and consecrated in 1902 and have the heaviest and finest bells in the Southern Hemisphere. A major feature is the fascinating stained glass windows within the Cathedral, each with their own story. We farewell Adelaide and travel up to the beautiful Barossa Valley where our first stop is the gorgeous Chateau Barossa which showcases the magnificent Antique Museum in the Château’s Ballroom. The museum contains a private collection of antique furniture and Meissen porcelain, considered one of the most valuable and important in the world. Browse the Wine and Rose Gift shop, partake in a tasting of the exclusive wines and enjoy a walk in the beautiful gardens. Maggie Beers Farm Shop is our next stop where we are treated to a special cooking demonstration using Maggie’s versatile products. We have time to browse amongst her personally selected regional specialty goods, before making our way across the deck to The Farm Eatery. Here we enjoy a fabulous 3 course share style lunch prepared by talented young chef Tim Bourke. Why not purchase a glass of Pheasant Farm or Beer Brothers wine to enjoy with lunch. After our Maggie Beer experience we visit Penfolds Barossa Valley Cellar Door, built in 1911 this site became the focal point of Penfolds wine-making in the 1970’s. With our wine tasting we learn about Penfold’s history in South Australia. On our way to our accommodation we take in the magical panoramic views of the valley from Menglers Hill Lookout and the International Sculpture Park. Dinner tonight is in our hotel. Overnight Tanunda: Barossa Weintal Hotel Day 3. Wed 16 Sept: Barossa - Mildura Breakfast & Dinner This morning following check out we depart for the Olivewood Historic Homestead and Museum in Renmark for a guided tour of the original home of Canadian Charles Chaffey, who with his brothers George and William established the Renmark and Mildura Irrigation Colonies. We visit the museum which was originally the olive oil processing rooms but now displays a huge collection of about 3000 black and white photographs illustrating the early life in Renmark and its surrounding districts. We enjoy morning tea at Olivewood before we are met by a local guide for a highlights tour of Renmark and the surrounds. We purchase lunch in Renmark before we visit the Frank Harding Collection, two galleries featuring Frank Harding’s own paintings and illustrations. Day 3. Continued Frank served as a Policeman in several South Australian towns for 19 years, after he resigned he built a gallery and studio in Renmark and held numerous one-man exhibitions throughout Australia, as well as England and the USA. The first gallery features a 3,000 square metre ceiling mural of Bushrangers and their exploits, many paintings showing the diversity of Frank’s ability and a large collection of Australian memorabilia. The second gallery houses the unique “They Flew For The King” collection of aircraft paintings. Each painting depicts an actual event and has been authenticated and signed by the pilots. We depart for Mildura, arriving late afternoon, to check in to our accommodation before enjoying dinner in the motel restaurant. Overnight Mildura: Chaffey Motor Inn Day 4. Thu 17 Sept: Mildura Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner After taking in the history of Mildura with our local guide, including the recently updated waterfront precinct, we board the PS Melbourne for our Murray River Cruise. Our cruise offers a relaxing two hour return journey down through Mildura’s Lock 11 on board the majestic steam driven, Paddle Steamer Melbourne. A comprehensive live commentary of the river and its history, fauna and flora is conducted throughout the cruise involving the public in the current beauty and history of the river and its vessels. After our cruise we enjoy a light lunch on the river-front at Bobby and Me before making our way across the river to catch up with Mario and Maria at Orange World. Our tour of Orange World is a fun and intriguing tractor train tour through 50 acres of citrus orchard. We gain a true understanding of the citrus industry and what it means to the local growers. We learn the process of picking, packing and marketing of the delicious fruits. We continue up to Trentham Estate Winery to enjoy a relaxing and informative wine tasting session at the cellar door, situated right on the banks of the Murray River. After a wonderful day we cross back over the bridge into Mildura and gather for dinner in the motel restaurant. Overnight Mildura: Chaffey Motor Inn Day 5. Fri 18 Sept: Mildura - Wimmera Silo Art Trail - Sea Lake Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Today we depart Mildura and travel out to the soldier settlement of Red Cliffs. We visit Big Lizzie, the largest traction engine built in Australia. Big Lizzie was so slow and heavy it took two years to make the journey from Melbourne to Red Cliffs. After five years of work clearing mallee scrub, it travelled to Glendinning Station in Balmoral and stayed there for over forty years before returning to Red Cliffs. We continue our drive through Ouyen and into Patchewollock to view the first of six completed Silo Murals, a large portrait of local farmer, Matt Hulland, painted by artist Fintan Magee. We then take some time out to enjoy lunch at the local pub before continuing on the “200km Wimmera Silo Art Trail”. Our next destination, Lascelles, is home to the second silo mural on our path with art work being completed by Melbourne-based artist Rone. We then continue onto Rosebery where we visit the most recently finished art work by Keff-eine. This afternoon we travel to Sea Lake for check in at our accommodation and time to freshen up before we are joined by our Lake Tyrell guide Julie. We enjoy nibbles and drinks at the Sky Mirror Gallery with Julie before heading out to enjoy the scenery and to witness the beauty unfold on Lake Tyrell at sunset. Those wishing to are able to hop into a pair of “Gum Boots”, which are supplied, and take a walk on the lake. On completion of the walk we travel back to Sea Lake for dinner. Overnight Sea Lake: Lake Tyrell Accommodation Day 6. Sat 19 Sept: Sea Lake - Wimmera Silo Art Trail - Swan Hill Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Following breakfast and check out this morning we rejoin the Wimmera Silo Art Trail at Brim, where the art work here was the first to be completed. The small farming town captured the world’s attention in January 2016 after Brisbane street artist Guido Van Helten painted a giant mural on the town’s unused grain silos. Our next stop along the trail is in Sheep Hills where artist Matt Adnate has created a monster 30m high x 40m wide piece of art. The Rupanyup Silo Art leg of the trail is now complete. Russian street artist Julia Volchkova has done a fantastic job with a mural of a young Rupanyup netball and football player adorning the sides of these silos. We then head to Wycheproof for a lunch stop at Bakery on Broadway before we make our way to Swan Hill. Later in the day we check in at our motel to freshen up before an early dinner. Following dinner we take a short drive to the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement to witness the spectacular new laser lights show “The Heartbeat of the Murray”. This laser spectacular is the first of its type in Australia and will depict the history of the Murray River from before land form to present time. This amazing show is projected onto a 50’ water screen in the river, involves pyrotechnics and also special effects that physically engage the audience. After the show we return to our accommodation for a well earned rest. Overnight Swan Hill: Comfort Inn Campbell Day 7. Sun 20 Sept: Swan Hill - Boort - Bendigo Breakfast & Dinner After breakfast and check out we arrive back at the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement where we join in the bustling lives of our pioneers and enjoy a cruise along the mighty Murray River on the historic PS Pyap and grabbing a bite to eat for lunch (at own expense). We then continue down to Boort calling at Piccoli’s Spanner Sculptures. This country garden is filled with larger than life sculptures. The most iconic depicts life in the Australia, from a shearer, to a pair of fighting stallions, a Mallee bull, to intricate garden seats. No doubt there will be something that inspires us. These wonderful works of art are made entirely of antique and modern day spanners welded together. This afternoon we continue our drive to historic Bendigo where we check in and rest up before dinner at our accommodation. Overnight Bendigo: Quality Inn Colonial Day 8. Mon 21 Sept: Bendigo Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner This morning we visit the Central Deborah Gold Mine for a self guided tour above ground before we travel 100 years an hour on the famous Bendigo Historic Vintage Talking Tram. Once aboard the meticulously restored tram the expert commentary explains the history and significance of the buildings and locations as they pass us by.
Day 8. Continued We travel past and hear the story of the Majestic Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Alexandra Fountain, The Grand Beehive Store and the world famous Shamrock Hotel. After disembarking the tram we visit the Golden Dragon Museum for a guided tour through the museum and beautiful gardens. The museum houses the world’s best collection of Chinese processional regalia and features the world’s longest and oldest dragons, which includes Sun Loong and Loong, who have been in the annual Easter Monday procession for over 100 years. The exhibition called “The Bendigo Chinese Community - A Unique History” depicts the history of the Chinese Community since the famous gold rush days. Arriving at the Shamrock Hotel we enjoy a High Tea Luncheon before strolling to the Soldier’s Memorial Institute Military Museum which houses a broad range of wartime memorabilia. We take some time to wander through the displays of items that have been either donated or loaned by individuals and organisations. Continuing our walk to one of the oldest and largest regional galleries - Bendigo Art Gallery, here we admire the fabulous exhibitions on display before heading back to our accommodation to refresh before dinner. Overnight Bendigo: Quality Inn Colonial Day 9. Tue 22 Sept: Bendigo - Warrnambool Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner This morning after breakfast we depart for Warrnambool via Beaufort for a stop, stretch of the legs, and cuppa from the coach. On arrival into Warrnambool we make a beeline for lunch before our local guide jumps aboard the coach for us to enjoy the highlights of Warrnambool tour. From Flagstaff Hill we begin our tour which takes in Whalers Inn, Lady Bay, Logans Beach, Middle Island, Thunder Point Coastal Reserve, Wollaston Bridge, Cannon Hill and Granny’s Grave. At the conclusion of the tour we then take some time to wander through the Flagstaff Hill Museum which boasts Australia’s richest collection of historical relics and artefacts from shipwrecks of the Great Ocean Road. The most famous of these artefacts is Loch Ard Peacock standing 1.5 metres tall. We then check in at our accommodation and freshen up for an early dinner before we head out again to witness the spectacular multi-million dollar Sound and Laser Light Show “Shipwrecked” portraying the story of the journey and shipwreck of the Loch Ard. After a big day we travel back to our motel for a good nights rest. Overnight Warrnambool: Deep Blue Hotel & Hot Springs Day 10. Wed 23 Sept: Warrnambool - Great Ocean Road - Geelong Breakfast & Dinner Today we set out along the Great Ocean Road, with its breath taking scenery and beauty it has become one of the Great Road Journeys of the World, winding its way along one of Australia’s most spectacular coastlines. The road was built to honour the servicemen and women of World War 1, and extends more than 300km along the coast. We make our way down to Peterborough and the Port Campbell National Park. The start of our exciting scenic drive begins with a photo stop at the Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands before arriving at the Loch Ard Gorge (featured in last night’s sound & light show), the site of a tragic shipwreck in 1878 when at least 50 people on board lost their lives as the iron hulled clipper, Loch Ard, came to grief against the rocks. Our next stop is at the Twelve Apostles viewing area where we overlook most of the surviving huge pillars, which loom out of the surf, carved over time by the fury of the ocean that has toppled some of the original natural structures back into the water. We then travel up into the Great Otway National Park through Lavers Hill and back down to Apollo Bay where we are able to stretch our legs and purchase lunch. Leaving Apollo Bay we continue along the coast through the small hamlets of Kennett and Wye River before arriving in the delightful township of Lorne for a stop and wander. The last leg of this great journey takes us through Aireys Inlet and Anglesea before arriving in Geelong for check in and dinner next door to our accommodation. Overnight Geelong: Best Western Admiralty Motor Inn Day 11. Thu 24 Sept: Geelong - Bellarine Peninsula - Melbourne Airport - Home Breakfast This morning we are joined at our hotel by our local guide and set off on a sightseeing tour of the Port of Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. We take a look through the National Wool Museum located on the Geelong Waterfront. We discover the past, present and future of the Australian Wool Industry. Around this area we can see some of the old bluestone buildings classified by The National Trust keeping residents and visitors always mindful of the city’s heritage. Following our visit we enjoy morning tea at The Wool Exchange Cafe. After morning tea we depart Geelong and make our way up to the Melbourne Airport for our afternoon flight back to Brisbane after a wonderful trip away with Trade Travel.
