SNAP FOOD STAMPS SNAP benefits can help put healthy food on the table by providing benefits to buy food at many local grocery stores and farmers’ markets. Benefits are provided each month through a plastic ACCESS Card, similar to an ATM or credit card. TERMS "EBT" stands for Electronic Benefit Transfer, a system set up to easily give you benefits through your ACCESS card. "SNAP" stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the name for the food stamp program. "SNAP benefits" are the same as food stamps. WHAT SHOULD I KNOW? You can work and still get SNAP benefits. Farmers’ markets often accept SNAP benefits, so you can purchase fresh, local produce using your ACCESS card. For more information, see the "From the Farm" section of this guide. 5
AM I ELIGIBLE? Eligibility is based on household size, income, expenses and other factors. Households have to meet income tests to get benefits, but households that have members who are age 60 and older, or who are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits can have higher incomes and still get benefits. Does your monthly household income fall below these limits? If so you may qualify for SNAP. MONTHLY INCOME LIMITS (BEFORE TAXES) 1 Person: $1,608 2 People: $2,166 3 People: $2,723 4 People: $3,280 5 People: $3,838 6 People: $4,395 7 People: $4,952 8 People: $5,510 9 People: $6,068 10 People: $6,626 Each Additional Person: +$558 NOTE: If someone in your household is 60+ years old or disabled, higher income limits apply. Childcare and medical expenses for seniors and SSI/SSD recipients can be counted as allowable expenses toward determining your SNAP benefit amount, but are not deducted from gross income to determine eligibility. PHILLY FOOD 6 FINDER
IMMIGRANT ELIGIBILIT Y Documented immigrants can often receive SNAP benefits if they have lived in the country for 5 years or more with a green card, or are children (ages 18 and under). SNAP does NOT affect immigration status. Ineligible immigrant parents can still receive benefits for their children even if parents do not qualify. Certain non-citizens, such as refugees or aslyees from certain countries, may also be able to receive benefits. COLLEGE STUDENT ELIGIBILIT Y Students enrolled at least part-time at an institution of higher learning may qualify for SNAP if they meet one of the following requirements: Student is enrolled in Federal Work-Study. Student works 20 or more hours per week. Student has a dependent under the age of 13. Student is over age 50. www.phillyfoodfinder.org 7
