Introduction Welcome to this guide which explains your council tax, the council’s budget, and where your money goes. The council’s budget is made up of the money we receive from the government as a grant, business rates, and the money we raise through council tax. Since 2010 the amount of money we receive as a grant has been reducing, and although we have had to put up council tax, this increase only covers a small part of what we have lost. In this guide you can find out more about where our money comes from and in particular about the changes taking place with business rates. The council works with other public bodies, the private sector and community and voluntary groups to improve the borough. Our two main aims are to increase prosperity within the borough and to narrow the gap between the most vulnerable residents and the better off. Please read this booklet to find out how your money is spent. 3
