28th May 2021 RECEPTION WEEKLY LETTER A r o und up of t h i s w e e k ' s f u n a c t i v i t i e s w i t h M r s T a y l o r and Mr Braidwood. Dinosaurs We have sadly come to the end of our time focusing on dinosaurs. What a lot of fun we have had learning and playing alongside this great topic. Thank you for all the toys and books you have brought into school to share with us, they have really enjoyed looking through them and talking about them with their friends. All of the boys have been really inspired to write about different aspects of dinosaur life. They have also invented their own dinosaurs. They had to think of its name, colour, where it lives, what it eats and drinks and what it likes doing. There were some fantastic imaginative dinosaurs. One lived in a bin, another played football, they were all sorts of colours and shapes and sizes, some drank lemonade, some ate cupcakes and they all loved then drawing a picture to match their description. With the help of the sun, the boys used the toy dinosaurs to cast a shadow onto their piece of paper, which they then drew round. They then created a picture around their dinosaur, adding lots of volcanoes, trees and mountains. Another activity we have done this week, is that we became paleontologists and used clay to create our own fossils. The boys enjoyed getting messy and manipulating the clay to create a stone and then adding their fossil shape into the clay using sharp pencils. We can't wait for them to dry! We enjoyed reading the story 'Dinosaur Roar' to the boys and they then had to think of oppositional words for those in the story, and for other words. The boys also wrote their favourite dinosaur facts that they have learned and it was lovely to see the boys confident to have a go independently, using their knowledge of sounds and phonics to help them. The boys have really enjoyed watching Andy and the dinosaurs on the BBC website, as well as watching short episodes of his travels back in time. Click here to find them all. We were so impressed with your dinosaurs you did at home. With your help, they made some amazing 2D and 3D dinosaurs and it was lovely to see the variety of ideas. The boys loved sharing and explaining their creations with their friends and us. O u r topic afte r h a l f t e r m w i l l b e w a t e r ; s e a c r e a t u r e s , w ater cycle and much more!
W h a t happene d t o t h e d i n o sa u r s ? Dinosaurs - Our own theories We have also been talking about the demise of dinosaurs and fossils as well this week. Was it a meteorite, was it poisonous gases from a time of extreme volcanic activity, was it a global change in temperature or was it disease born by a rise in the proliferation of insect borne diseases? They each drew a picture of what they thought happened. The boys all have different ideas and it is always lovely for them to have their own opinions and encourage them to explain why. I think dinosaurs became extinct because a very big meteor crashed into Earth and blocked out all the sun. Plants died and so dinosaurs didn't have their food to eat. William F. A spaceship crashed into a Stegosaurus and destroyed the dinosaurs. Stefanos. The meteor and the volcano died the dinosaurs and made them extinct. Henry. Meteor is blocking the sun. Leo. The fire and the meteor and the volcano made a fossil and the dinosaurs say aaaarggh! William S. Acid rain, tsunami waves, fire and a meteor covered the dinosaurs and their bones turned into fossils. Freddie. The skunks ate the dinosaur eggs and eventually the dinosaurs became extinct because they ate them all. Harry. Volcano exploded and the Velociraptor died. Rupert. All the small meteors built up to become a massive meteor which hit the Earth killing all of the dinosaurs, except for the lizards. Tommy. The asteroid and volcanos killed the dinosaurs and made them extinct forever, and turned the dinosaur into a rock. Rory. The volcano blasted some fireballs into the dinosaurs head and the whole place filled with water, and mud and water went on the dinosaurs body, killed the dinosaurs and turned it into rock and then skeleton bones. Louie. Volcano erupted and it killed the dinosaur and then it flooded, and then the tree grew up again. Benji. A meteor is going to crash into the Earth and killed the dinosaurs. Sebastian B. A giant rock from space hit the Earth and killed all of the dinosaurs. Milo. Volcano erupted and killed the T Rex. Amir. The meteor hit and all the dinosaurs died from the water tsunami and the fire and the meteor. Sebastian C. The lava is blocking the water and the asteroids killed the dinosaurs and made smoke all around the Earth. Raymond. The volcano had gas what killed the T Rex and the Brachiosaurus bumped the Velociraptor and they both died. Then the meteor killed the volcano. Theo. The volcano erupted and killed the Velociraptors. Jadon. There was a storm because the meteor hit the sea and then all the dinosaurs died out and turned into stone in the mud and made fossils. Elliot. W h a t is your t h e o r y ? W e h ave been l e a r n i n g a b o ut s o l i d a n d f l a t s h a p e s . Shape Space and Measure Week This week has been our Whole School Shape Space and Measure Week. On Monday the boys enjoyed a visit from Mrs Howard, our Maths Co-ordinator. She talked to the boys about all the different shapes we see around us. Thank you for all the Shape Scavenger Hunt forms returned! Well done to Amir and Theo for winning the prizes. The boys then went on a shape walk around school looking for these shapes. The clipboards were out again and off they went! The boys had to add a tally each time they saw the different shapes and then convert their chart into a bar graph. We could not believe how many rectangles, cylinders and cuboids there were! P l e a se do cont i n u e t o l o o k a r o u n d y o u f o r l o t s o f s h a p e s over half term. Phonics We have now assessed the boys again as we do this at the end of each term and are pleased to say that all the boys have made progress. There will be another rejig after half term through to the end of the summer term. Please do keep encouraging your boys to write words, sentences and stories at home. Please make sure that the boys bring back the correct items after half term. They all need a sunhat, water bottle and sun cream applied before school each day.
We have had some butterflies arrive this week! Butterflies In the light on the moon, holding on to a good star, a painter of rainbows is now traveling across the night sky. How apt that on the day that Eric Carle died that our hungry caterpillars should emerge from their cocoons as beautiful butterflies. Henry's was the first to appear and then the rest have followed as the week has gone on. We have enjoyed watching them over this half term, and have now let lots of them free to enjoy the world around us. Click here to listen to Eric Carle reading his story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. ...Simply, slow down, be kind. And don't forget to have art in your life - music, paintings, theatre, dance and sunsets... P l e a se do reme m b e r t o s i g n u p f o r G r a n d p a r e n t s ' D a y h e r e. Half Term Activities We have included a few things for the boys to do during half term if they wish. All the information has been sent on Teams. Please post back anything that the boys do to us there as we would love to see what they have done. There is a variety of different activities to do. Please note that this is not homework but from the boys enthusiasm learning about dinosaurs we are hoping that many of the boys will choose to complete these fun activities. Please do send us a postcard of any fun days out, trips away or photos of you spending time with family and friends! We do miss you all in half term. We hope you have a lovely weekend, enjoy the Bank Holiday Monday, and a super half term! See you all on Monday 7th June. Mr Braidwood, Mrs Puller, Mrs Salt and Mrs Taylor
