Magic Life January 2021 Edition Magic Life News Sharing Experiences In this Edition • Vaccination • Thank you • Felt Christmas • Banquet • Time For Jumpers • White Christmas • London Lights • Winter Sports Hello and welcome to 2021 During what has been a very difficult 2020 for the whole of the UK and in particular the whole of the care sector, we appear to have missed the opportunity to celebrate our successes because the focus has been on when we have dealt with massive changes to how we now live our lives. Locked away from loved ones, travelling differently and spending holidays at home trying to stay safe and well. We also have the challenges of travelling to work on a day to day basis and faced with those who don’t fully understand the difficulties we face in doing our job, although recently there has been recognition from the government to applaud all of us as key workers doing an amazing job. In looking at the glass half full, the way we have faced the challenges head on are a way of showing how open remarkable we are as individuals in the way we go about attempting to keep the people we support safe, building positive relationships with families and adapting to different way of looking at the support we provide for loved ones and all the time asking ourselves how you would feel if you placed a loved one in the care of Magic Life. We look for inspiration amongst our colleagues and aware that we will all have a different story to tell about how they have been affected. At Magic Life, it is about being proud to say that we all did our bit however small to ensure that we have provided love care and support to people who needed it most. We hear the stories of those who sacrificed time with their families to ensure that the people we support continued to enjoy a quality of life which has been ravaged by Covid. Yet here we stand at the start of 2021 saying ‘we shall not be beaten’. This is what makes all within the organisation proud to stand with the team and say let us learn from what was not been great and turn it into great Best wishes for 2021 Eamonn Cummings Operations Manager 1
Magic Life January 2021 Edition Vaccination COVID -19 Covid-19 is a very scary virus. We are continually being bombarded with news of the amount of new positive cases and the daily death counts, so it’s understandable to think that the vaccine is unsafe too. Also, there is a lot of misinformation on social media too but when you start to read the facts about the new vaccine and the control method used in its development we can see that Covid -19 vaccination is safe. How do we know a vaccine is safe? Safety trials begin in the lab, with tests and research on cells and animals, before moving on to human studies. The principle is to start small and only move to the next stage of testing if there are no outstanding safety concerns. Who approves vaccines or treatments? Approval is only given in the UK if the regulator, the MHRA, is happy that a vaccine is both safe and effective. Checks continue after approval to make sure there are no further side effects or long-term risks. Independent experts on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) decide how best to use a vaccine and who should get it. What’s in the Covid vaccines? Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine (and Moderna’s) uses bits of genetic code to cause an immune response, and is called an MRNA vaccine. It does not alter human cells, but merely presents the body with instructions to build immunity to Covid. The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine uses a harmless virus altered to look a lot more like the pandemic virus. Vaccines sometimes contain other ingredients, like aluminium, that make the vaccine stable or more effective. Will, a vaccine make me ill? There is no evidence that any of these ingredients cause harm when 2
used in such small amounts. Vaccines do not give you a disease. Instead, they teach your body’s immune system to recognise and fight the infection they have been designed to protect against. Some people do suffer mild symptoms after being vaccinated, such as muscle aches or a raised temperature. This is not the disease itself, but the body’s response to the vaccine. What about allergies? Allergic reactions to vaccines are rare. For any approved vaccine, the ingredients will be listed. The MHRA says it hasn’t identified any “serious adverse reactions” during the trial of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. As a precaution, it says people with a history of significant allergic reactions should not currently have the Pfizer vaccine. Be aware that anti-vaccine stories are spread online through social media. These posts are not based on scientific advice (or blend facts with misinformation).
