The Application Form • Straight forward • Just collects personal data • BUT complete carefully and truthfully e.g. location
Our Online Tests 1. Verbal Reasoning 2. Logical Reasoning 3. Numerical Reasoning 4. Video Situational Strengths Judgement 5. Personality, Motivation, Values
Prep for Online Tests • Practice really does help • Take tests in a suitable environment e.g. no disturbances, power, Wi-Fi, etc • Have resources to hand paper & pen, calculator, water, etc. • Follow instructions carefully • Avoid wild guesses – work carefully & steadily • Plan when to take tests e.g. don’t procrastinate, morning person vs. night owl, etc • Let us know ASAP if any reasonable adjustments are needed

STARR • Situation – set BRIEF context for your story. • Task – what was required of you. • Activity – what you actually did. • Result – how well the situation played out. • Reflect - how successful you think you were & how you would change your approach next time. KEY is the ability to reflect on the example
Typical interview questions • What do you know about us? • What attracts you to a career in …? • What challenges do we face? • Tell me about a successful project you delivered • Probes – Why was it successful? – What did you learn from that? – What would you do differently next time?

NHS GMTS General Staying up to date with current Management developm ents in the NHS m ay help you at the interview stages. Useful sites I like to read are Health Service Journal, Guardian Healthcare, The King's Fund and NHS Managers. 2

Life after the Scheme • Majority of trainees stay in NHS • Move into a band 7/8a role which means starting salary of £31,696 or £40,428 (plus location allowance 5%,15%,20%) • Continue to stay with NHS • Move between sectors • Senior & high profile roles across the NHS • 4 of the last 5 NHS Chief Executives came from our Scheme

Step 1: Online tests • Mix: Situational, numerical, verbal and logical Useful support: 1.Practice workshops/sessions -Run by the Careers service -Within Course: a ‘Careers’ Module 2. Advice for students -Answer honestly (particularly for situational qs)
Step 2: Face to Face Interview Useful support: 1.Mock interviews: -Specific for this application -Focus on STARS technique -Feedback 2. Advice for students: -Values- based: why NHS, this scheme, this stream -Review Healthcare Leadership Model -Identify key areas and think of examples -Follow NHS and Scheme media: Snapchat, Twitter, BBC News etc.
Step 3: Assessment Centre • Mix of interactive tasks • Included a 2 minute presentation Useful Support: 1.Mock Assessment Centre: -Focus on group work + ‘In-tray’ exercises -Feedback 2. Advice for students: -Presentation practice- speed, timing and ‘value’ -Listen to others, work as a team
Step 4: Beginning the Scheme • Slightly scary (but exciting!) • Welcome events and 20 day orientation: -Meet other grads -Network -Immersion in wide range of NHS Advice for students: 1. Maximise the opportunity! 2. Network, network, network 3. Keep learning throughout
