Facebook/Canvas, what do these two products have in common? • Developed by a new generation - system users • Saw a need and had the talent and initiative to implement an idea • Focus is on sharing content, collaboration, communication • Groundbreaking systems – put method of sharing and receiving information in the hands of the users

Why Migrate to a New LMS? • Med School – mandatory use of iPads • Sunset of Bb CE Vista (8) • IT 5 year plan and the University Plan for Academic Enrichment • Frequent feedback regarding dissatisfaction with current system especially from faculty
Assessment • Lasted for 6 months • Result was 102 page report • Recommendation to move to a hosted version of Canvas by Instructure via a phased implementation
Survey • Between June 2010 and November 2010 (6 months) • Surveyed 767 students, 234 faculty, 15 staff • Focus groups 100 participants, 73 departments

Summary Feedback from across campus showed the current system was not meeting campus needs. Assessment data supported this feedback and the investigative process began.
RFIs • RFI documents were sent to 9 vendors representing 6 different LMS platforms • 6 RFIs returned • After review 3 selected to come to campus for a demonstration and usability testing • Canvas was not initially on the list
GAE • Google was approached for consideration; however, they were uninterested in responding to the RFI though noted Google’s potential as a personal learning network.

Outcome Self directed usability study -‐ Canvas was ranked highest in regard to ease of navigation, intuitiveness for adding content, best layout or design as well as best liked solution overall.
In terms of the 8 criteria for selecting a software solution, Canvas fared equally with the other vendors in most categories.
