International and European Student Orientation Event Programme Week ONE: The Welcome Hub is open from 10:00 to 16:00 at The Students’ Union (Upper Engagement Space) on Frenchay campus; Where our Global Ambassadors will be available to help you with any enquiries you may have, such as finding accommodation, campus tours and explaining how to use the UWE online system. *To book the Orientation events you MUST complete the registration form, which can be found here. Events hosted by The Students’ Union can be booked by clicking on the link here. Monday 6 January 2020 Event Description Time Location We’re here to take you to the local retail shops, Meeting point: Household Trip to pick up any items that you may need for your 15:00 – 17:00 Main info point, new university life! Frenchay Wednesday 8 January 2020 Event Description Time Location Come and join us at the Welcome party to meet other new international students and enjoy Students’ Union Welcome Pizza Party pizza and drinks with great music. This is a 17:00 – 19:00 Bar, Frenchay FREE event, but space MUST be reserved online in advance. Thursday 9 January 2020 Event Description Time Location Meeting point: Join us for a City Tour to discover the diverse Main info point, City Tour and MShed and vibrant city of Bristol. Afterwards you can 13:00 – 16:00 Frenchay/ Museum Trip visit the MShed Museum and explore the story MShed at of the city. 14:00* Friday 10 January 2020 Event Description Time Location Join us to explore a maze of quirky stalls, street Meeting point: food, and historic architecture at Bristol’s St St Nicholas Market Tour + Main info point/ Nicholas Market, in the heart of the old city of 10:00 – 14:00 Harbourside Trip Arnolfini at Bristol. Tuesday 21 January 2020 Event Description Time Location Come and meet the Global Student Support team over a nice cuppa whilst practising The OneZone, Conversational Café 11:00 – 12:00 speaking English with a friendly group of Frenchay students in a relaxed environment. Wednesday 22 January 2020 Event Description Time Location Join us for a visit to IKEA to pick up any items Meeting point: IKEA + Asian Supermarket that you may want to personalise your room. Main info point, 11:00 – 16:00 Trip Followed by a trip to Wai Yee Hong to stock up Frenchay/ IKEA on authentic Oriental products. at 12:00* Thursday 23 January 2020 Event Description Time Location Come and mingle with us over a selection of Global Café: Celebrating the Chinese Year New snacks and meeting the The Octagon, 14:00 – 16:00 Year of the Rat Chinese society, whilst learning some Mandarin Frenchay New Year phrases. Come down to enjoy the celebration organised by Bristol’s largest Meeting point: Chinese supermarket. There will be traditional Main info point, live firecrackers, lion dance, Kung Fu, dancing, Wai Yee Hong CNY event 10.00 – 14.00 Frenchay/ Wai crafts, street food from dumplings, Japanese Yee Hong at food, to cakes and bubble tea! What better way 11:00* to celebrate your arrival than with a day trip to Wai Yee Hong. 4
Orientation Timetable For new International and European students starting in January. As a new international or European student, orientation is your chance to meet other students, members of staff, and learn important information about the University. *Global workshops are running on Monday 13 January and you will need to register your attendance, by clicking on the link here. Please note: Spaces will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, but we will prioritise your first choice. Day ONE: Monday 13 January 2020 WORKSHOPS Time Workshop Description Location An introduction from Kelly Cotter, the Head of Global Centre. Followed by the Global Student Support team and Vice-President of the Students’ 10:00-11:00 Welcome Union at UWE. We’ll welcome you to UWE Bristol and give you some top tips on living standards in the UK. Free coffee and teas provided. 11:00-11:15 BREAK We will help you understand your financial contract with UWE Bristol and our financial processes. An 11:15-12:00 Money matters opportunity to seek advice on opening a bank Bristol Business account and money management. School (X An introduction to the academic skills and the Bock), Lecture 12:00 -12:45 Academic skills and library support available to help you succeed at theatre, Room Library support UWE Bristol. 2X112 12:45 - 13:30 LUNCH BREAK Here we will help you gain work experience whilst studying in the UK, enable you to access International Talent & 13:30 - 14:30 employability related training, events and Global Employability volunteering opportunities. An opportunity to explore the job market for international students. Advice on visa and immigration policies. We will 14:30 -15:15 UK Visa & Immigration provide guidance for international students coming to UWE Bristol or continuing their studies with us. 5
Day TWO: Tuesday 14 January 2020 *Global Stall Fair is open on Tuesday 14 January from 11:00 to 15:00. Come and talk to university staff and Student Ambassadors about all the information and advice you need to know.
