Other news… Did you know? Antarctica remains the only continent in the world that remain virus free and where physical distancing is not required! Australian Antarctic Festival: Primary School Penguin Painting Project In late January, I planned for both classes to be involved in the International Primary School Penguin Painting Project, as part of the Australian Antarctic Festival. The school has paid for the initiative. It is an exciting first time event for us and other schools from around the world. Due to COVID-19, it looked like this project was not to go ahead. Great news! The MDF (medium density fibre board) colony of penguins have landed on my desk, with clearance from customs agencies. The MDF penguins now safe to post to Hobart, Tasmania, when painted. When students paint/decorate their penguin, please return to school no later than Friday 12 June (term 2 week 7). I will pack and post the penguins in their special box to the Australian Antarctic Festival c/ Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum in Hobart Australia. They will be displayed for visitors. The festival and the Penguin display is usually shown on television and in newspapers. Please read the guidelines below for painting and decorating your penguin. Penguin guidelines • Do not use oil paint • Acrylic paint is recommended, water colours could be used but the colours are not as bright • Penguins can be painted or decorated how you wish. If you choose to glue materials on your penguin a non-acidic adhesive must be used. Real bird feathers or organic material cannot be used as they could contain bacteria or insects which may endanger Australia’s environment. • Do not paint or decorate a 5mm section at the bottom of your penguin, as it will slot into a stand. Penguins are at school waiting to go home with students on the students’ rostered day at school, next week. Penguins are to be returned in week 7, no later than Friday 12 June. This allows 4 weeks to paint/decorate and time for me to post. Take care and plan your design first. Any mistakes can easily be painted over. We have 35 students and I have a colony of 50 penguins, therefore 15 spare penguins are looking for someone to paint them! Please ring the office or email me, if you want to bring one of the extra 15 penguins to life. 1/2H may see google classroom for guidelines and images. Newsletter: Week 2 Term 2 2020 Page 2
Casual staffing We are fortunate to have been allocated a casual classroom teacher to our school for two days a week which will be every Monday and Friday for term 2. We welcome Mr David Stark to our school, as of today. Annual Report AR 2019 The timeline for schools’ AR 2019 had been extended to 1 June. However, I was able to deliver and publish our school’s Annual Report 2019 on the school website by the end of term 1. Learning Support Team meetings Learning Support Team meetings are continuing to be held on a Wednesday morning before school via google hangout meets. Thank you to staff for engaging with another of the Departmental video conferencing apps. nbn relief package Please read the information regarding a nbn relief package, which is attached to the newsletter. Phase 1 begins next week (week 3) Monday 11 May We ask students bring their books to school on their rostered 1 day at school beginning next week, week 3. Please ensure students have their lunch, recess, a water bottle, hat and a Library bag. The school play equipment and bubblers are currently closed, until further advice, so please remember a water bottle. All home readers were cleaned prior to the books being sent home. We realise Crewe Lane is not a ‘kiss and drop’ area and that many parents walk their child/children to school. We thank you for not lingering at ‘drop off’ or ‘pick up’ times and adhering to physical distancing from others. A teacher will be in the playground from 9am. All classrooms have hand sanitisers for students and staff. Every child will have access to the Library on his or her rostered day. Please return any library books you may have found at home under the bed or the lounge. Current advice for school librarians regarding shared resources is to keep returned books separate from regular library items. An area should be dedicated to storing these returned items where they can be quarantined and cleaned, before being returned to the shelves. From our Office Scholastic Book Club Please view the link to the Scholastic book catalogue https://scholastic.com.au/book-club/virtual-catalogue-1/ The means of ordering books remains the same. Closing date for orders is by Monday 18 May. Students will be given their orders when the orders arrive at school are received at the when they attend school on their rostered day.
