Return to Learn Expectations East Elgin Secondary School East Elgin will be taking a cautious and measured approach to our reopening and return to in-person learning. Families and students 18 years and older who have elected to engage in face-to-face learning are expected to be in a supervised area when in our building. There are inherent risks associated with congregating in large groups indoors and we will mitigate these risks as much as possible through our expectations. Should you be unable to find the information, expectation, or clarification you are seeking in this document, please do not hesitate to contact us at your convenience at (519)-773-3174 or email us at eastelgin@tvdsb.ca. School Access Controlled access to the school will be in effect at all times. All exterior doors will remain locked and entrance will be by appointment and permission only. Appointments and permission to access the school building can be arranged. All persons shall wear a mask when accessing the building and will have passed the daily screening prior to entering. Students must not come to school if they have symptoms/feel sick or are unwell. Daily Screening Daily screening of all students is required prior to students riding school transportation or attending school. Parents/ guardians will be provided with a checklist to complete this daily screening for each of their children (K-12) and are required to ensure their child(ren) pass the current COVID-19 screening tool. The screening tool can also be found on the Ministry’s website at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/. Students who are 18 or older are required to complete this screening tool themselves. Symptoms Exhibited While At School As part of our process to ensure the health and safety of students and staff, it is important to monitor signs and symptoms of students and staff during the school day. As such, if a student exhibits COVID-19 symptoms while at school, they will be relocated to a supervised designated location in the school. Staff will immediately contact the parent or guardian to pick up their child at school. We request that parents and guardians establish a process for the retrieval of their child if they are notified during the school day. Students will not be able to take school transportation if they have been isolated with symptoms. Masks All masks are to be securely and properly affixed to your face prior to your entrance and must be worn at all times within the building except for nutrition and hydration purposes. Students are welcome to wear the TVDSB cloth mask they have been provided or use their own mask provided it covers the nose and mouth areas fully. Students who are unable to wear a mask due to medical reasons shall provide medical documentation to the main office as soon as possible. Permission to access the building without a mask cannot be permitted until medical documentation is received and on-file in the main office.

It is extremely important to practice physical distancing outdoors especially if congregating unmasked. Supporting Student Health & Well-Being We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on students, their families, and our staff. We are prioritizing the creation of school community and connection. It is important for the conditions of psychological safety, belonging, inclusivity, and connection to be established as students return to learning in both learning models. In both in-person and virtual learning, our TVDSB professional staff will continue to support and provide service to students. This may be through in-person, phone, or virtual means. Professional Services staff will provide in-person consultation and support for educators on social-emotional and mental health and well-being strategies in the classroom. TVDSB will also support school staff with additional information that is provided in the School Mental Health Ontario learning framework and toolkit. All student and parent/guardian supports can be found on the TVDSB website under Mental Health and Well-Being. Digital Learning Platforms for in-person learners Teachers working with in-person learners will use Brightspace or Google Classroom as a teaching platform for each course they teach. The ongoing use of a digital platform in all classes supports the need to change instructional delivery models if/when required. This board wide expectation is responsive to different learning needs and allows for ongoing support for students who may need to be absent from class. It is expected that the digital learning platform will be accessible, organized, and current. Students and families will be informed of the digital platforms in the first week of the course. If you have not received notification, are unsure of the platform that is being used, or have any other questions regarding the digital learning platform please contact the classroom teacher. Teachers can be reached by voice by calling East Elgin SS at (519)-773-3174 or through their email link accessible on the East Elgin SS website.
