Why is Safety Important? To protect ourselves from danger To protect others from endangering themselves To understand the difference between something dangerous, and something that is not
FIRST Participant Responsibilities Everyone is responsible for safety during team meetings and the design, build, travel, and event phases of the competition.
FIRST Safety Manual (excerpt) Be familiar with FIRST Safety manual, as well as understand and follow established safety requirements applicable to your work area. Be familiar with any site restrictions at competition events. Work in a safe and responsible manner.
FIRST Safety Manual (excerpt cont.) Use personal protective equipment (PPE), safeguards, and other safety equipment as required. Identify and report any unsafe or hazardous conditions to the student Safety Captain, Mentor, and/or Safety Advisor. This includes work practices that may cause an accident. Encourage safe behaviors in everyone around you.

Safety in our Workshop Mentors attend every team meeting. Background checks are required for mentors, volunteers and chaperones. Fire extinguishers provided by Flint Fire Department Safety binder & Injury Log are easily accessible Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Hand Tools Includes any hand-held tools used to finish a task. Use if: It is in good condition. There is a hard surface. You know how to use correctly. “A wrench is not a hammer.” When finished, clean area and store safely.
Power Tools Plan before you use. Mentor must be present. Use if: It is in good condition. You know how to use the tool. You are focused. Don’t get distracted or distract others while using the tools. Do not leave a tool unattended while it is on. Turn off and unplug when finished. Store safely.
Batteries Do not plug batteries into each other. Hold batteries with two hands. Batteries are like babies: They are fragile, they are very expensive, and they make a mess if you drop them. If you do drop a battery, notify a mentor right away, even if it does not crack open. Do not plug a dropped battery back into a charger.
Robot Safety Lift robot with your legs, not back Watch out for sharp edges on robot Always wear PPE around robot Make sure people know when you are enabling the robot Do not stick your hand inside the robot while it is enabled
Online Safety Be a Gracious Professional online. You still represent “Hybrid Hornets” even when you are using your personal social media accounts. Make sure your email addresses and profile pictures are “business” appropriate. #5150 doesn’t publish students’ last names online or in media

Safety at Events Have your cellphone on you at all times Keep it on and charged Use Slack to communicate Add Lead Mentors to your contacts Travel in pairs using the buddy system Do not give out your personal information to people you don’t know, even if they seem nice.
Event Travel Follow team rules for safety at hotel. Stay in assigned room and observe curfew. Eat & rest! – Caffeine and sugar are not substitutes for meals. Students may not self-administer any medication. Medication, prescription & non- prescription, will be given to Jean Herta before travel.

FIRST Safety Rules Regarding Pit Safety & Tool Use: Be sure to use tools properly, in a safe and controlled manner. Unsafe operation, especially those that endanger others and your team, will be subject to scrutiny by the event staff and safety reviewers. Their findings may result in team warnings or event expulsion. No tools that throw sparks/ or open flames. No floor standing power tools. No grinding or painting in the pit. No brazing/welding at the team pits. Soldering may be done using an electric iron/gun only.
Spirit Safety Hang signs in a safe manner and a the end of the event, remove all signs and anything used to hang the signs (tape, string, etc.). Mascot needs to have a buddy to walk help with walking around, and be extra careful going up & coming down stairs/bleachers.
Event First Aid Station Each event hosts a First Aid Station to assist with any injury or illness. First Aid Stations are in the Pits (refer to the Pit map for the exact location). Pit Administration Station must be notified of any injuries or illness.
Need Help? Atevents, FIRST staff, event staff and volunteers wear badges with their role. Should team members or mentors have questions or a problem, staff and volunteers will help find the answer. When in doubt of the safety of a situation, ask.
