Tena Koutou Katoa Friday 14 May 2021 — Issue 12 An Outstanding Careers and Students Pathways EXPO On Wednesday this week, our senior students had the privilege to spend most of their day attending our in-school Careers and Student Pathways Expo organised by staff Michele Zackey-Meek and Amanda Blakey in our Student Pathways Area. Around 60 organisations and institutions participated and their representatives made almost one hundred presentations about pathway choices students can consider. The following photos provide a glimpse of what was on offer. We are proud and pleased to be able to put on such a magnificent event for our senior students. Our Year 9 Student Ambassadors also deserve huge praise too for their cheerful assistance, which helped the day go so smoothly. We have had a huge amount of feedback – verbal and written. Examples include: ‘Thank you for such a well organised Expo today, we had great engagement with students and a great turn out (100) in our AUT presentation’. This from Otago University: ‘Your careers day was a roaring success – congratulations!’ And Auckland University: ‘I want to pass on our thanks for a wonderful event on Wednesday. The organisation and communication was excellent. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to have both a stand and presentations to offer our SPO team and faculties the opportunity to connect with your students. We were very busy at the stand with great questions from the Selwyn College students and I know the opportunity to present was greatly appreciated by our faculty team members and all were very positive about the day. Thank you also to your extended team on the day. From the welcome at the door at check in, the helpers directing us to our rooms, and the lovely hospitality team who kept us well fed and watered during the day, we were incredibly well looked after’. On Thursday evening, we also put on an inaugural event for parents/caregivers with speakers from ten different universities and institutions. It was great to see so many parents/caregivers keen to support their student’s future choices. Again, we received some wonderful feedback as well as some suggestions for how we can build on this in the future.
Selwyn at the World Vision Youth Conference Four students represented Selwyn at the World Vision Youth Conference this week. They heard from many amazing speakers, including Yoseph Ayele and Lydia Hollister-Jones, about the changes they have made in the wider world, as well as in their local community. Alex Robinson reports that, ‘One of the take-away messages was that even the actions we make as individuals can still help contribute to change! Their inspirational speeches reminded us all that we all need to make informed choices. Something as little as buying fair trade food or wearing clothing from an ethical brand can make a massive difference in someone’s life, and even small actions go a long way in this world’. LtoR: Poppy Jones, Ella Craske, Alex Robinson and Cameron George Our Social Council delivers Easter Cheer! Although not quite timed for Easter, the Selwyn Students’ Social Council brightened some people’s lives at the start of this term through a Bunny Bundles initiative. Students delivered 90 chocolate nests and 160 Bunny cookies to various students, mentor groups and staff. Their next event is Rose Day. Wonderful Voluntary Work by Our Cause Corp Students Earns a Lovely Thank you Thank you to our Year 13 student Amy Holder who through her excellent leadership of Cause Corps has motivated a group of wonderful student volunteers to put in many hours of voluntary work to support important causes in our community. This includes knitting beanies for the Auckland City Mission. Here is a letter we received in response: ‘I wanted to get in touch to thank you for the knitted beanies we received last week. Going into winter, warm clothing such as your beanies are invaluable to those who reach out to the Mission for support. As you can imagine, more people than ever have turned to the Mission over the past year while our community continues to deal with the long-lasting effects of COVID-19. The bigger beanies will be distributed to some of our street whanau, while the smaller ones will be handed out at the Calder Medical Centre. Once again, thank you very much for the time and effort you have put into these beanies, and for your support over the years. Daniel Payne, Auckland City Mission
Our wonderful voluntary Cause Corp students Selwyn Student Oliver Holden Hears from the PM Our senior Totara Learning Centre student Oliver Holden recently wrote to our Prime Minister. He is delighted to have received a reply – which even has a hand-written note from Jacinda herself. Oliver is hugely proud of this and we are proud of him for his initiative and really well written letter.
