Howard B.Thomas Grade School Eblast Friday, March 23, 2018 Mrs. Carrie Ahlstedt, Principal ~ carrie.ahlstedt@central301.net Mrs. Julie Salamone, Assistant Principal & Early Childhood Coordinator ~ julie.salamone@central301.net Principal’s Message: Dear HBT Parents, We cannot thank our community enough for the outpouring of love and support you have shown to the Buckholz family during this time. I know that it has meant a great deal to them. I would also like to thank everyone for supporting our staff and students through this difficult time. We will greatly miss Riley. He was a special part of our HBT family that we will never forget. I know that I will treasure the memory of his wonderful laugh forever. It is times like these that make us truly realize the importance of the work we do and the honor you give us to be with your children all day long. Each and every one of your children will hold a place in our hearts forever. Thank you so much, Carrie Ahlstedt 1
News Terrific Twisters We are dedicated to continuing to provide a positive, caring, and safe learning environment for all students. We want our students to have pride in themselves and their school; therefore, when they are showing great behavior and demonstrating kindness, respect, fairness and responsibility, students will be recognized for their behavior and earn a Twister Ticket from any teacher or staff member in the building who has witnessed the behavior. Tickets will be placed into their classroom Twister bins. At the end of each month, your child’s classroom teacher will draw one boy and one girl from their classroom Twister Ticket bin. Students that are chosen will earn a Terrific Twister Certificate and their picture on the Terrific Twister Wall of Fame. At the end of each month, each classroom teacher will empty their classroom bin into a large Twister Ticket holder in the library. As a school, we will be working towards monthly goals which are marked on the Twister Ticket holder. If the monthly goal is met, the whole school will earn the monthly incentive. Have a wonderful Spring Break! We will see you Monday, April 2nd. 2
Curriculum Corner 5th Grade 5th grade is currently working on book clubs. Students are participating in group and whole class discussions. All reading literacy, and speaking & listening standards are being met when students participate in book club discussions. For a final project students will be writing a literary analysis. Be sure to ask your child what they are reading. 4th Grade The 4th grade students at HBT have been reading and analyzing the allusions from Greek myths. Along with reading and writing, some of the activities have included Socratic discussions and STEAM projects. Students have written their own Greek plays, created their own Pandora’s Boxes and Trojan Horses. Classes had the opportunity to rewrite myths from another perspective (as a soldier inside the Trojan Horse or as Helen of Troy, etc.). They also had the chance to complete a Greek Mythology Breakout Box created by Mrs. Herold and Mrs. Stover! 3rd Grade Third grade has been studying inherited traits in science. In order to better understand how traits are passed from generation to generation, the students participated in a lab. The students were shown different generations of creatures made from plastic eggs. The eggs each had a combination of genes inside of them. The students made predictions and observations about the changes they witnessed over the span of the generations. Different observations across the generations included a change in color and eye size due to combinations of genes and environment. 1
