SUMMARY OF GRADE 1 FI
                                                PROGRAM
• French Immersion is the SAME as English language learning BUT done in French.
• Curriculum is about building literate students, FI Language curriculum is different
from the English pathway but the other subjects are the same topics and
expectations they are just taught in French.
• Students will use their first language as a foundation to build upon learning a
  second language
• Teachers will use both English and French language in the classroom and will slowly
fade the English Language out but will support where necessary.
• Focus for the first few months will be on Oral language (vocabulary building) in the
  new 2nd Language (French)

• By watching and listening, students quickly begin to recognize words and
phrases and to respond appropriately.
• The teacher uses lots of praise as students speak their first tentative words in
French. Students are encouraged to try out their new language. Soon they are
using French words within English sentences.
• The teacher listens and observes the students carefully to assess what they know
and understand. Speech and classroom activities are gradually adjusted as
students’ language skills develop. Students who enter immersion in Grade 1 are, as
a rule, speaking in French sentences interspersed with English words by December
of their first year of school. After the first couple of years, students are encouraged
to use French all of the time.
● Please note that it is very important for students to be able to sit and focus on a
carpet for extended periods of time, more than in an English Program, as the
oral literacy is the strongest focus for the first few months of school.

• Children receiving second language
instruction often show higher achievement in
a range of subject areas, including Math,
REASONS FOR FI Science and Language Arts
INSTRUCTION • Learning a second language builds pride
                   and self esteem
                 • Second Language learners promote
                   international dialogue, collaboration and
                   engaged global citizenship
                 • Knowing two languages is more
                   advantageous than knowing just one
                   language
Study after study has shown us that student
achievement improves when parents play an
active role in their children’s education, and
that good schools become even better
             schools when parents are involved…
PARENT
ENGAGEMENT
   Parent
engagement Students are more likely to be motivated, to
earn higher grades, to have better behaviours
matters. and social skills, and to continue their
education to a higher level when their parents
are actively engaged in supporting their
             success at school.
⮚ Parents do not need to possess French-language skills
themselves in order to support children in learning FSL.
⮚ Parents need to provide a language-rich environment in the
home; by exposing them to French through television, movies,
and cultural events; by seeking opportunities to make
  connections with French-language communities
“ PARENTS NEED TO HOLD HIGH ASPIRATIONS AND
EXPECTATIONS FOR THEIR CHILDREN, AND SCHOOLS
NEED TO WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PARENTS SO
THAT THE HOME AND SCHOOL CAN SHARE IN THESE

                                                   ”
    EXPECTATIONS AND SUPPORT LEARNING.
    J. HATTIE, 2009
A PARENT’S POSITIVE ATTITUDE CAN BE THE MOST
IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE CHILD’S SUCCESS.

PREPARATION FOR FI
School Ready:
⮚ Backpack that holds all their materials ~ consider the size of library books that
students take out and all the things they bring back and forth
⮚ Indoor shoes are easily put on and independently packed
⮚ Be ready and independent for the lunch by opening their lunch bags and eating
from containers they can open (all in 20 min!)
⮚ Clothes are comfortable to wear at school ~ sitting a lot on the carpet and at
desks, not playing all day, not clothes that would be distracting to their learning
⮚ Learning patience ~ don’t respond to their need immediately, have them wait a
minute or two as they will need to share the teacher’s time
⮚ Activities for them to play at recess, what are they going to play ~ soccer? Tennis
  ball? Skipping ropes?
PREPARATION FOR FI CONT…
Language Ready:
⮚ Think about and point out the French in our house and in your community (ie.
Read food labels in French; watch their favourite movie in French on
  Netflix/YouTube

⮚ Find the French Language resources in the public library
⮚ Come visit our school yard for a picnic to get to know the school
⮚ Talk about the bus ride, maybe even sign up for the session to learn how to
  be on the bus
