One Planet network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme Reflecting on the UN Food Systems Summit OPN Executive Committee Meeting 14th June 2021 14
Convincing stakeholders of the importance of a (sustainable food) systems approach 15
Paving the way to the UN Food Systems Summit • Successful joint advocacy promoting food systems and/or OPN recognition: ▾ CFS’21 ▾ FAO Conference 2019 - Committee on Agriculture (COAG) ▾ UNEA Ministerial Declaration 2019 ▾ UNGA 2018 ▾ HLPF Ministerial Declaration 2018 ▾ 3 SFSP global conferences Through these, the SFS Programme contributed to the momentum on food systems, almost paving the way for the Food Systems Summit • Current role at UNFSS: ▾ Most key Summit players are SFSP MAC members. ▾ Organized 1st Summit Global Dialogue with UN Special Envoy. 16
Expectations UN Food Systems Summit 17
Opportunity: the UNFSS as catalyzer of 2021 the year of transformation and rebuilding Leaders’ Pledge for Nature CBD COP15 UNCCD COP 15 UN Decade of Restoration G7 and G20 Finance & Green Recovery UNFCCC COP26 Nature-based Solutions; NDC 18
1. A Statement of Action by the UN Secretary-General that offers a guiding narrative on equitable and sustainable food systems 2. A large number of Member States taking immediate action (not more commitments) with strategies, policies and investments that advance their national pathway towards food systems transformation. 3. A bold set of multi-stakeholder action and coalitions UN Food Systems emerging from cities, communities, companies, civil society, Summit citizens, development actors, young people, and food producers expected 4. Vibrant communities, in particular youth movements, OUTCOMES are built or strengthened worldwide to drive food systems transformation 5. Provisions for a mechanism of regular follow-up and review activities at national, regional and global levels 19
What can be role of the OPN in implementation of FSS? How do we get there? 20
How can OPN play a part in implementation of UNFSS outcomes? • Engage in Summit coalitions for implementation of Action Areas: SFSP has key role through direct and indirect (partner) involvement. • Encourage and secure Member State and private sector actions. • Foster continued inclusive dialogue: promote dialogues that trigger food systems pathways of transformation with governments The SFSP has valuable assets useful for Summit outcomes: ▾ Portfolio of multi-stakeholder core initiatives and working groups ▾ A suite of tools for SFS implementation on the ground ▾ Global conferences ▾ Mandate (political legitimacy) and reporting mechanism 21
Key processes to secure OPN/SFSP secures Food Systems Summit implementation role ▾ SFSP MAC renewal: once completed in October, develop adapted work plan aligned to Summit outcomes. ▾ Overcome bottleneck: We need clarity on what happens with the 10YFP and SCP global partnership after 2022 ▾ Critical framing: We need that the new “strategy on global collaboration on SCP” post-2022 allows flexibility to continue work based on the ‘systems approach’. 22
•Q & A 23
• THANK YOU 24
Anne Pluvinage-Nierengarten Ministry of Ecological Transition France "Achieving national objectives on climate change and biodiversity through SCP policies” 25
French National Strategy to combat Imported Deforestation ➢ SCP approach to support climate and biodiversity agendas ➢ Free supply chains in cocoa, timber and derived products, natural rubber, palm oil, soy, and beef and its byproducts from deforestation they might induce in producing countries ➢ Strategy composed of 5 axes: • Development and promotion of knowledge • International cooperation • Public policies to support demand • Promotion and coordination of commitments of relevant stakeholders • Measurement and monitoring 26
Axis 1: Development and promotion of knowledge ➢Tool to measure footprint of France and human pressure exercised on forest ecosystems globally 27
Axis 2: International cooperation ➢2019 - 2024, the French Development Agency dedicates at least 60 million euros per year to finance projects that are contributing to the sustainable management of forests and reforestation; ➢Supports to the development of roadmaps within producer countries and regions (Ivory Coast, Columbia and Indonesia); ➢Cooperation with major importing countries such as India and China to collectively improve the sustainability of raw materials supply chains. 28
Axis 3: Public policies to support demand ➢National Strategy on vegetal (plant) proteins to reinforce in ten years its self-sufficiency; ➢Working towards a "zero deforestation" public purchasing policy by 2022 (including the “zero deforestation objective” in agricultural plans); ➢Public procurement guide for “zero deforestation” (which will support more than 130 000 public buyers); 29
Axis 4: Promotion and coordination of commitments of relevant stakeholders ➢ Incentivizing financial actors to explicitly and systematically integrate the fight against deforestation into their investment policies and strategies; ➢Online platform bringing together businesses, NGOs, and public institutions to inform the public on imported deforestation and highlight initiatives from the private sector. 30
Axis 5: Measurement and monitoring ➢ Measurement and monitoring of progress, in order to, if necessary, take new binding measures and broaden scope of the Initiative to include additional products. 31

What is the added value of the One Planet network as a platform for inspiring a global movement for SCP? What can be done to actively promote the centrality of SCP approaches to addressing the climate, nature and pollution crises? Breakout group Are there specific bridges between these agendas that need to be built questions to better “connect the dots”, and what are the challenges of doing so? What elements make up a strategic partnership (in this context) and what should a strategic partnership concretely produce? 35
