Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year Principal Tish Mineer Assistant Principal Jennifer Hermanson Our Vision Statement By working together as a Norterra Canyon family we are building foundations to empower our students to navigate our ever changing world and positively impact the community.
ELA Reading and Writing Into Reading Curriculum • 12 Modules – 3 week cycles per module – 6 days per cycle • Targets the diverse needs of students by using whole-class instruction, small group practice, and options for building independence.
• Whole class instruction: – Building Knowledge and Vocabulary – Reading Workshop – Foundational Skills – Writing Workshop
• How to support your child at home: – Reading for pleasure – Board games – Read TV shows – Bedtime reading bargain – Start a book club with peers
Math 4 Main Areas of Study: ● Place Value and Decimal Fractions ● Operations with Fractions and Decimals ● Volume and Area Calculations ● Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane
Math How to support your child at home: • Practicing multiplication facts • Cooking together – Measuring ingredients – Focusing on fractions – Double the recipe, halve the recipe • Play with money! Coins are all fractions of $1.
Science 4 Main Units of Study: ● Sun, Moon, and Stars ( my favorite !! :) ) ● Chemicals & Mixtures ● The Human Body ● Levers & Pulleys *** And...I do plan on doing in-class experiments ASAP, like we do in normal circumstances
How to support your child at home in relation to science : ● Read scientific fiction (Isaac Asimov for example) and non-fiction (a magazine like Popular Mechanics for example. Biographies of famous scientists can be especially interesting to young students. ● Explore shows on The Discovery Channel and The National Geographic Channel ● Try a family “Science Movie Night”. Movies like “Apollo 13”, “The Martian” (w/ Matt Damon), or any kind of science movie/show on Netflix or Hulu will probably work great ! An amazing series to look into that pertains to our current space unit is called “How The Universe Works” ● To try a virtual space trip, go to https://dailyhive.com/mapped/escape-nasa-virtual-tours * This site, sponsored by NASA, offers many links that can be used to do everything from visiting a space station to visiting the outer edges of the universe

Social Studies How to support your child at home: ● Read historical fiction and biographies ○ Everything Your School Textbook Didn’t Tell You About … by Steve Sheinkin ● Explore shows on The History Channel ● Explore the progression of America through maps ● Plan a family trip to the East Coast to explore famous landmarks and battlefields ● Go on a Virtual Field Trip ○ Museum of the American Revolution, American Battlefield Trust, Mount Vernon Mansion, Colonial Williamsburg
