About Michael Levy Partner, Sprains, Strains & Fractures Dr. Michael Levy has been involved in Orthopedics for 36 years including basic research, orthopedic product development, and clinical practice. He is Board Certified in Orthopedics. Dr. Levy is in his 16th year in private practice. He is also currently Chief of Orthopedic services at Salem County Medical Center. Dr. Levy received both his BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Toledo. He worked as a Product Development Engineer at Howmedica (a division of Pfizer) in Rutherford, NJ. He holds two orthopedic design patents. He earned his DO from The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, ME. His post graduate medical education includes: Internship at Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ, Orthopedic Surgery residency at Peninsula Hospital Center Consortium in Queens, NY, and Orthopedic Trauma fellowship at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ.
About John Crombie John Crombie is President of UpStart Product Development, a company specializing in creating and nurturing high potential opportunities into commercial products. He has developed innovative and successful product portfolios for diverse medical specialties including orthopedics, spine, sports medicine, plastic and reconstructive surgery, general surgery, women’s health procedures, diagnostics, and global emerging markets. John was previously employed by numerous industry leading organizations, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon, where he led efforts in skin and abdominal closure, uterine and vaginal cuff closure, and hernia mesh fixation, leading to innovative products. He was also employed by Pfizer, Stryker, Allergan, and numerous private organizations and startups. John holds dual BS degrees in Physiology and Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Business Management. Most notably, John has commercialized 70% of his 60 patents into new products spanning across 6 companies, resulting in more than $2B in sales.
THE PROJECT GOAL • Meet as a team 2 hours per week! • Learn Medtech product development process • Learn FDA regulations • Learn the surgical procedure • Learn competitive products • Collaborate with physicians • Optimize the device design • Prototype a new device • Evaluate device performance • INVENT!
THE TEAM: Must have intense interest or knowledge in: • Attending medical school, orthopedic interest a plus (2 students) • Good CAD skills, Solidworks a plus • Medical metals and fabrication • Surface properties for soft tissue and bone-stimulation for healing • Patents and intellectual property • Basic Project Management • Most importantly, common sense!
