Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2020 Page 6 Art and Environment O God we praise you for the small, diminished things; for the health at the edge of our sicknesses, for the moment's quiet in the hours of storm, for the few that held when the many broke and ran, for an answer of love in a mob of hate. We praise you for the minor key, the oblique kindness, the hidden joy. May Jesus Christ understand us in whose name we pray. Amen. Some of you may be interested in the ways in which we have shaped art and environ- ment for Lent: Lent is a season "for the minor key." Lenten time is about reflection and contemplation, a time to examine ourselves--some even would say, a depressing time. The journey we are called to make in Lent is to confront our own mortality, our own frailty and broken- ness, our deep need for redemption and resurrection. So in Lent we journey to the cross. Along the way, our worship space reminds us of the harshness of life. There are no flowers, no celebratory hangings, little light. The sanctu- ary is stark, simple, spare. It reflects "the minor key," the diminished things that speak of death and dying. Together with the liturgy, music, and spoken words, the environment of our worship space serves as another lens--a way for us to see--and a way for Lent to "speak" its meaning to us.
Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2020 Page 7 Strategic Plan DIOCESE OF ORANGE STRATEGIC PLAN 2018 - 2023 SUMMARY OF DIOCESAN STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS Catholic Education and School Sustainability: Goal - The Diocese will educate and form the Catholic identity of the youth of the Diocese through stable, aca- demically excellent and faith-filled Catholic Schools. Immediate Goals (1-24 months) Implement new Catholic identity evangelization and faith formation initiatives in the schools. Reorganize the Department of Catholic Schools; develop new Mission, Vision and Value statements; and hire key staff in support of the schools’ Strategic Plan. Initiate a comprehensive targeted marketing campaign to increase enrollment through retaining existing stu- dents and recruiting new students. Highlight the values of a Catholic education. Establish, set and enforce school staffing standards and policies and procedures for tuition management and in- creases. Design and implement regional models for tuition assistance programs (starting with the most under- enrolled schools) to fill empty seats. Make necessary improvements to the Marian Alliance model. Provide leadership training at all levels and standardize all “back office” systems. Perform a comprehensive schools’ safety evaluation and take corrective action as needed. Standardize job descriptions and salary standards for all staff and create measurable performance metrics; offer opportunities for professional development. Seek to increase donations and contributions to support the elementary schools. Determine methods of ensuring equal access for low-income students and equality of academic resources across schools. Develop approaches to strengthen collaboration and support among the principals and schools. Evaluate and strengthen, as needed, all Consultative Schools Boards and ensure that every school has a function- ing school board. Develop a clear description of responsibilities for pastors with a parish school.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
