STAR Spotlight: Maria Planas My lovely husband and I migrated to Australia from Spain in November 2011 and have considered this country our home since then. We call Aussie: the Blessed Land. I’ve been lucky to learn a few languages when growing up. Other than English, I speak Spanish, French and German. After working for aprox 8 years at a Recruitment & Training Company servicing the mining/resources/ oil & gas/building & construction industries, I decided to make a career change and was thankful for being offered the opportunity to join STAR in November 2019. First, I volunteered in the Home Maintenance Team for various months. From there I was able to assist the Care Team with some projects, and then joined the Business Services Team in July 2020. I enjoy and love my work, as I find it very rewarding and filled with challenges every day. I love to put a smile on everybody’s faces and assist in any way I can. I am here to help our workers reach their goals and enjoy a great work experience at STAR. 13 www.starcommunityservices.org.au

STAR Spotlight: Heather Drover Hello my name is Heather Drover. I volunteer two days a weekl assisting STAR Home Maintenance team. Typically my volunteering day is very fast paced with many calls to be answered. I truly enjoy talking to STAR clients. It gives me a real sense of being helpful to someone in need. I can hear the relief in their voice when we’ve been able to support them with their enquiry. Some clients have some wonderful stories to tell about their lives. Sometimes we’re the only people they have spoken to for a few days. But that is just as interesting for me to listen to their story as it is important for them to have contact with someone. I really enjoy my volunteer role with STAR and find all the people that work and volunteer here are very friendly and encouraging. Volunteering gives me the opportunity to help the community but also to meet and talk to other people which is important for my own health and wellbeing. Other than volunteering I like to travel with my husband in our caravan around Australia or overseas and experience different cultures and countries. 14 www.starcommunityservices.org.au
