Millennium Hotel, Rotorua 16-18 September 2018 The 2018 North Island Secondary Schools Sports Conference is the premier professional development opportunity for school sport personnel in NZ. The conference includes 25 workshop options, keynote speakers, practical sport sessions, and trade displays from a variety of businesses and organisations that provide services and products to schools.

Bring your questions and ideas. 1.2 Student-Led Design – the Amy Marfell and Using the context of increasing the voice of young people Jacqui Johnston participation of girls in sport, this workshop explores the opportunity for meaningful use of the voice of the participant in designing initiatives and programmes. 1.3 Catering for Diversity Jenny Lim 213 ethnic groups were identified in the 2013 NZ Census, and one in four kiwis are born overseas. What does this mean for school sport participation, and how do we respond? ActivAsian is an initiative established with the aim of increasing participation in sport and recreation in the growing Asian community. This session will use insights from ActivAsian to highlight the importance of cultural awareness and competency in school sport. There will be a focus on case studies, research on motivations and barriers to participation, and practical tools for promoting diversity and inclusion in school sport.
1.4 What influences young Garry Carnachan Who are these young people we are trying to people’s sports choices? get into our school sports colours? What is influencing their decisions around sport and physical activity. This practical workshop looks at these questions and examines the trends and characteristics of student sporting choices and successful initiatives to engage them. You will design an opportunity that targets your students, uses the enablers and removes the barriers to take away and get them involved. 1.5 Sport Department Health & Dean Flyger Hear about a Sports Department that is aiming Wellbeing to create a vibrant and effective working environment amongst the challenges that sport provides. Initiatives on developing staff morale, monitoring work-loads and health & well-being will be provided. 10.30am Morning Tea 11.00am Plenary One Hamish McEwen Insights into School Sport 11:30 Workshop 2 2.1 Managing your time, getting Leanne Knox Time produces exactly twenty-four hours each more done day whether we like it or not. It is up to us : whether we fill that time with trivia or with worthwhile activities. It is not time we need to manage; it is ourselves we need to manage. An interactive session and participants leave the session with a personal set of key actions to improve their self-management. 2.2 Recruiting Coaches and Andy Rogers Critical enablers to sport in secondary schools Volunteers are volunteers and coaches who are prepared to commit their time to supporting the participation and aspirations of young people. But gaining, retaining and supporting them is one of our biggest challenges – hear some tips and tricks from Sport NZ’s coaching lead, Andy Rogers 2.3 Developing a Safety Action Garry Carnachan We all want our students to be safe and school Plan sport Health & Safety approaches need to be thorough but must also be practical. Hear the Ministry of Education guidance and participate in a workshop that will lead you through the development of an event Health and Safety Plan for your school sport events and activities. 2.4 Balance is Better Alex Chiet “Balance is Better” - We look at the importance of Balance for participation and progression and achievement in sport, and discuss issues that coaches, teaches, parents and sports leaders are struggling to combat in putting the welfare of students first.
2.5 Value of sport to education Celia Fleck, Matt Sport is an effective tool for engaging young Cleaver and Carl people in learning and improving their Condliffe academic and social outcomes. This workshop showcases the Sport in Education approach and how it is changing schools' views of sport's contribution to their environment. 2.6 Open Session Sport NZ, RSDs, A time for anyone to rock up and talk to the NZSSSC, Conference experts about issues in school sport Presenters 12.45pm Lunch An opportunity to explore the trade displays and network 1.30pm Plenary Two Karen Laurie The Physically Literate Teenager 2.00pm Workshop 3 3.1 Communicating with Young Chloe Bryan and Shift is an initiative delivered across 5 cities in the People Allie Thomsen Wellington Region focused on improving the wellbeing of young women (12-20 years) through physical activity, leadership and empowerment. Shift’s National Manager, Chloe Bryan and Ignite Sport’s Lower Hutt Shift Coordinator Allie Thomsen will share their insights and some tools to best engage and communicate with young people. They both come from youth development backgrounds and hold tight the values of building whanaungatanga, co-design, empowerment, inclusivity and accessibility in order to successfully meet the needs and hear the voices of young people. 3.2 Managing the Grown-Ups Simone Spencer The Good Sports project aims to create a positive sporting and Junior environment for young people by educating and Armstrong supporting the adult influencers of that environment, primarily parents and coaches. 3.3 Sportsmart and Concussion ACC & NZ Rugby Twenty one percent of all head injuries in New Zealand are sustained through sport-related activity. NZ Rugby in partnership with ACC have developed a programme called RugbySmart, which includes a component on improved concussion management. At this year’s Conference, ACC and NZ Rugby will be hosting a special workshop to discuss how this initiative will be implemented and the support available to school sport and the wider rugby community, to reduce the severity of concussion symptoms and prevent post-concussion syndrome. 3.4 Activating Sport for Year Jamie Lane The sports environment in secondary school is quite 9/10 different from the earlier years and can be quite intimidating for those in their first two years of college. Hear some of the ideas our Play.sport activators have developed to make sure Year 9 and 10 experiences sports experiences are fantastic, and that they stay engaged in sport through their time at school. 3.5 Strategic Planning for Sport Garry Carnachan A practical workshop where participants will work through a fast paced, active process to produce the draft of a School Sport Strategic Plan for Enzed College.

But what is important and what isn't? What does it really tell us? And what don't we know? A workshop on understanding our work and influencing change. 5.2 Collaborating with Tertiary Peter Gilbert & Dr The St Pauls' College / WINTEC partnership - how Peter Maulder the programme fits into a school timetable, and the benefits for both institutions. Hear about specific components of the programme such as the assistance given by the students from Wintec to the athlete development programme which works directly on fundamental movement patterns and athlete conditioning rather than sport specific weight training. The data collected from test results and on-going intervention specific to human movement has been invaluable in both our Physical Education and Sports programmes. 5.3 In-school event management Tara Potter and Does organising your school sport "biggies" fall on Richard O’Sullivan you? Athletics, Swimming, Cross country...help is at hand! This session explores a great new, FREE piece of software to help with all the hard work as well as outlining the principles of good school event management and sharing some good practice. 5.4 Supplement Use in School Sian Clancy DFSNZ Education Manager and PhD candidate, Sport - Attitudes to Doping Sian Clancy, discusses what we currently know about supplement use and doping in youth sport. Sian will introduce the world leading research being conducted to better understand and prevent these behaviours from occurring in NZ youth sport contexts, and future directions for instilling the values of clean sport and food first approaches with the next generation of NZ athletes.
5.5 Leadership and You Garry Carnachan A practical workshop where you will develop a better understanding of your own leadership strengths and work-ons as well as take away some practical tools to use in leading and inspiring others. 5.6 Open Session Sport NZ, RSDs, A time for anyone to rock up and talk to the NZSSSC, Conference experts about issues in school sport Presenters 9:45am Plenary Three Justin Richards The Value of School Sport 10.15am Morning Tea 10.45am Workshop 6 6.1 Developing Facilitation Skills Andrew Hewetson 6.2 Sports Councils Kylie McGrigor Student sports leaders are the biggest influencers in engaging students in school sport. Typically, these leaders will help run school sports day such as athletics and swimming but what else do these leaders do? This session will look at student sports councils from a regional perspective and hear from two schools who have revived their sports councils to empower the students to lead from the front. Initiatives range from regular sporting opportunities to multiple events throughout the year. Not only do these student sports leaders develop leadership skills and accountability for sport at their school, they are involved in sports they are passionate about. 6.3 Funding Streams for School NZCT, Councils and Getting enough money and resources to do all the Sport Commercial great things you want in your sports programme Sponsors is always a challenge. Hear from 3 different agencies - gaming trusts, local councils and commercial sponsors - about what they are looking for in partnering with and supporting schools. 6.4 Athlete Development Matt Cleaver, Chad More than often approaches to Athlete Programmes - the wellbeing Coombes, Carl Development or Academies in schools are focused approach Condliffe on the performance aspects - technical, tactical, strength and conditioning with an aim of "putting trophies on shelves". This can work to the detriment of student athletes when their academic and personal development is relegated to a lower priority. Hear about how several schools are developing holistic, athlete centred wellbeing approaches to ADPs and also how this is being successfully implemented overseas.
6.5 Knowing your Staff - Valuing Robyn Richards The importance of understanding and respecting Uniqueness each other’s differences is a key ingredient in creating and developing high performing teams. This workshop intends to deepen your understanding of why you are the way you are, and why the people you work with are the way they are. It will raise your self-awareness and your understanding of the behaviours of others. By better understanding and embracing people’s natural differences it is possible to trigger the combined power of different personal styles so that internal silos are overcome. Your leadership will be enhanced through your improved communication. You will be introduced to the concept of TetraMap. TetraMap was developed in New Zealand Aotearoa by Yoshimi and Jon Brett who looked to nature to create a learning model that increases personal well-being and team cohesion. 12pm Lunch 12.45am Workshop 7 – Ideas into Action Go away from conferences all fired up and full of ideas, straight back into the mad rush of running school sport and wonder where they all went?
