Sponsor Update MAY 2021 PAGE 3 Governing Authority Update FINANCIAL LITERACY IN MIDDLE GRADES (7-8) ORC 3313.6015 requires all community schools to adopt a formal board resolution outlining how districts will meet the requirements of providing instruction in financial literacy to students in middle grades (7-8). Each school is required to submit to ODE evidence of its resolution and its plan for compliance. The resolution is only required to be submitted one time unless the school's curriculum or compliance plan changes. Then, a new resolution would need to be approved and submitted again. While this task is only required once, and may have already been completed, a copy of the resolution should be held on site at the school in the case that ODE requests a review during an on-site visit. ODE has provided the Financial Literacy in Middle Grades Standards and a free model curriculum for schools to use. Alternatively, the school may meet the requirement of providing instruction in financial literacy using a program or curriculum of its choice. If there is not a current, approved resolution for Financial Literacy in Middle Grades and a plan for compliance on file with ODE, it is recommended to discuss and approve the items at the next governing authority meeting. Approved resolutions and plans for compliance must be submitted to ODE via email. Additional resources are available on the ODE website including a sample resolution. COMMUNITY SCHOOLS ANNUAL STATEWIDE MEETING WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2021 The ESC of Lake Erie West Community Schools Center is thrilled to have Principal Kafele as the keynote speaker for the 2021-2022 Annual Statewide Meeting. This will be a virtual event. An official registration email will be coming soon.

Sponsor Update MAY 2021 PAGE 6 Special Education Update GRADUATION PLANNING & PATHWAYS UPDATE Graduation Planning In accordance with Ohio law, each student, beginning in Grade 9 and continuing on through high school graduation, is required to develop and maintain a graduation plan. The guidance from ODE has stated these plans should be in place starting with this year's sophomores. Consideration for Special Education Teams A student's individualized education program (IEP) may be considered in place of a separate graduation plan under certain criteria, such as if the IEP contains academic goals substantially equivalent to a graduation plan. Specific criteria are listed on the ODE website. Graduation Planning Template ODE has developed a graduation planning template: a draft Graduation Plan for the use in Ohio high schools. This template is intended to be utilized by schools to ensure all options available have been presented for graduation and that all students are on track to graduate. The template was developed as a resource for schools; it is not a required document. Graduation Pathways Update Recently enacted legislation (Section 9 of HB 67) allows districts and schools to substitute an eligible student's final course grade in an eligible course for the corresponding high school end-of-course test. This bill has also opened two new pathways to graduation for eligible students for the 2020-2021 school year only. HB 67 gives school principals the ability to make final calls on graduation eligibility for this school year and also provides the option for students to earn diplomas if they meet specified curriculum requirements and complete the OhioMeansJobs-Readiness Seal.
