Is that a problem? ○ No ● My child is an athlete. How does that affect his/her future schedule? ○ Athletic PEs may limit elective choices for the student ● What’s this Dual Enrollment program and how does my child qualify? ○ College credit in a high school setting ○ 2.75 GPA after 10th grade ○ ACT composite minimum of 20, with various minimums on subtests
So, how does my child succeed in high school?
Grades in high school do matter Part of our (parents, teachers, administrators) role during the freshman year is to get students to realize that school/grades really do matter. ● More challenging academic environment ● More distractions ○ athletics and extracurricular activities, social media, dances and social activities, driving, less parental supervision and more trust, and the “dreaded” girlfriend or boyfriend.
Don’t end your involvement...CHANGE IT ● Help your child establish routines, good habits ○ Time management ● Encourage students to get involved in extracurriculars ○ Express gifts/talents ● Acknowledge commitment and improvement ○ Not just “good grades” ● Allow the child to make mistakes ○ Build persistence ● Encourage students to handle challenges on their own ○ Ask “thoughtful questions”
Homework... ● It is important ○ Serves as practice ○ Opportunity for points ○ Could be the difference in a letter grade ● Homework should be completed by the beginning of class. ● Good place to begin reviewing for a test ○ especially when the child says, “I don’t have any HW”
Studying for tests... ● Study early...the student should be studying and/or reading notes nightly ● Use Notecards ● Quizlet, use technology to help organize notes
Ownership Our teachers are all caring professionals. They love our students. However, we want students to learn about accountability and responsibility. Forgot your homework? Forgot to study? Forgot to turn in your paper or project? Broke a school or classroom rule? Ownership is on the student, not the teacher. There will be a consequence, just as there will be in adult life.
So, what does all that mean? To help answer that … ● Dawn Aucoin ○ 9th-10th grade Guidance Counselor. ○ Taught Jr. High math, then Algebra I and II. ○ She is also a parent
Academic life... • Meet with students at progress report and report card times to discuss any failing subjects • Offer study skills counseling • Private Tutoring list available • Transition may be difficult for some • Sept 12th is Progress Report day • Report Cards - October 11th
Help! My child’s grades aren’t very good... 1. Check RenWeb 2. Discuss grades with your child 3. Encourage your child to talk with his/her teacher directly 4. Contact the teacher (copy guidance, AAP) 5. Contact the Guidance Counselor for help finding tutors, study tips, and organizational skills
Communication Equals Success *with teachers, counselors, administration *with your child *with other parents Don’t wait…Early intervention is the key to success No question is too small.
Social life... ● High school = social events, building relationships, and seeking independence. ● Parents = promote responsibility/independence while also setting/enforcing boundaries With freedom comes responsibility
How to survive Teen Social Lives… ●Be involved ●Set clear expectations ●Limit them ●Check Social Media ●Communicate with your child, their friends, parents of friends, etc…
