Harris Herald Brenda Keimig, Principal Brigitte Bernal, Assistant Principal May 2021 The Principal’s Pen… Dear Parents, It is hard to believe we are sending out the final newsletter for this school year! June is just around the corner, and we are already looking ahead to next year. If you know of a neighbor who has a pre-k or kindergarten aged child, please have them enroll at https:// www.pearlandisd.org/Page/966 Beginning on July 21st, all current returning students will need to complete the online enrollment process which can be found at www.pearlandisd.org. Please join us as we thank our teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-7. All educators deserve to be celebrated this week. They encourage, support, and prepare our children for the road ahead. Let’s take time to show them how important they are to us. Give an apple, flowers from the garden, home baked treats, or just a big hug and a “thank you” to your teachers. On behalf of all our faculty and staff here at C. J. Harris, I want to thank you for your continued support of our students, faculty, and staff. I feel incredibly blessed to be working in a community that truly values education. I wish you all a very restful summer! As always, my door is open to discuss any issues or concerns. Brenda Keimig Upcoming Events: STAAR Testing Reminder Our 3rd and 4th grade students will be taking the STAAR tests this month. May 11th is Math and May 12th is Reading. Library Letters: Hello from the Library! Here are a few important dates to remember this month for the library. May 7th – The last day to turn in your applications for library cards from the public library. Turn them in to the school and we will pick up your cards. You can use them to get books, eBooks and more. May 18th – May 25th we will be having a book fair to get us ready for summer reading. It is a buy one get one free sale that Scholastic is allowing us to do. It will be a face-to-face fair here at school following Covid protocols to keep everyone safe. More information will come home soon on the filers. May 7th is the day ALL student books are due. With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are trying to find all of our missing books. Here are a few tips to help us locate them. First things first, try to remember what the book/s looked like: How big was it? What color? Was it thick or thin? What do you remember about the cover? Also, keep in mind, all library books have spine labels, barcode labels and library labels so that they stand out. If you need to know what book you have out please email Ms. Kirk at kirkk@pearlandisd.org So, where was the last place you remember having the book? Here’s a list of actual places where kids found their missing books. Even if you don’t find yours in of these locations, it might help you think of other areas to search. Under your bed. On the back porch Under your brother/sister’s bed In the playhouse Between the sheets at the foot of your bed Under the TV set stand Between your bed and the wall On top of the VCR/DVD player or Between the mattress and box springs On top of the stereo In the trundle bed In the magazine rack In the crib On the coffee table On top or behind the dresser In the car (also check under the seats) In the dresser drawers Under the baby’s car seat In the closet (check all closets) In the trunk of the car Under the dirty clothes Under the spare tire Inside your couch that folds out into a bed In the other car In the toy box On the classroom or teacher’s bookshelf In the bathroom In my neighbor’s or friend’s desk (ask their permission before looking) Last but not least, think about the last time your parents told you to clean your room. Now, think about the various places you shoved piles of things, so that they would think you’d actually cleaned it. Make sure you check all of those places, too. Don’t forget to watch for the summer reading packet coming out the last week of school! It will also be posted on the library web page. Happy Reading! Ms. Kirk

CJ Harris ART Gallery Wow! It’s hard to believe how fast this year has flown by. I’ve really enjoyed working with your children on the various projects we did this year and I hope you will choose a couple from their portfolios to display in your home. Portfolios: Each child will bring home an art portfolio that contains the projects com- pleted this year. Please enjoy these pieces of artfor the sake of your child’s ef- forts, exploration, and creativity. I always suggest the terms: “Tell me about your art” or “How did you do this?” as a way to spark a discussion. Enjoy! Final Projects: 4th graders are finishing their miniature wall hanging. A great effort was made by students to learn weaving and adding beads. Our 3rd graders finished up their llama weavings. We will work with clay medallions next. Our 2nd graders are very excited to have used Model Magic in an “Among Us “ sculp- ture. I think this was their favorite. 1st graders just finished their woven alligator by adding texture scales to the backs. Very fierce. Kindergarteners have been working on a ladybug collage complete with fingerpainted grasses. Thank you so much for your support of the art department this year. Having a blast in the art room! Kathy Harmon
Music Notes: Happy End of the Year CJ Harris Musicians!!! I hope you are looking forward to the summer!!! I can’t believe this year has come to an end so quickly. The students and I have enjoyed using their music kits this year in class. Thank you so much to those of you that donated last year to make these kits possible. We have two very exciting events in May planned in music class. 1. End of Year performance videos (I will be emailing these out to parents at the end of the year to watch. I am recording each class performing a song so that you can see your amazing children sing and dance!! I am super proud of them!!!) 2. CJ Harris Virtual Talent Show (Those students that signed up with be sending videos in at the beginning of May and we will watch them the last week of school. Can’t wait to see everyone’s amazing talents!!!) A couple important reminders to parents and students: 1. For my virtual learners, you will be receiving one music assignment per week. I will post the assignment in Seesaw each Friday afternoon and the assignment will be due no later than the following Friday. The assignments are on Quaver music and are required. Please make sure you complete the quiz at the end of the assignment so you get credit!!! 2. For my face to face learners, we will complete our Quaver music assignments in class so you will not need to complete assignments in Seesaw since you are coming to school in person. *** We are using our devices in music class for all grade levels now (Kinder through 4th grade), except Pre-K. Please make sure that you bring your device to music class each week. If you do not have a device, please contact the school or your classroom teacher. Please continuously check out my school webpage to stay afloat on all information for music classroom topics at http://www.pearlandisd.org/webpages/kmiller/ It will be constantly updated throughout the year. Musically yours, Dr. Kristi Miller

From the What a year this has been! Thank you all for helping me keep our school safe and our students well. This year certainly presented a unique set of challenges. A few reminders as we finish up the school year: • Continue to keep sick students at home & call me to discuss the return to school criteria. • If your child has medication kept at school, please call to make arrangements to pick it up. Medications are not kept at school over the summer, and will not be sent home with students. All medications not picked up by the last day of school will be destroyed. Information to help get the 2021-2022 school year off to a good start: • Check what health conditions are listed in Skyward, and make any changes needed. Please call me directly to discuss major health concerns. • If your child will be taking medication at school during the upcoming school year, please get the Medication Authorization form completed by their physician over the summer and turn it in to the school your child will be attending next year. You can find the form on the District’s website. A new form must be completed each school year. • Students may not bring in their medication themselves, so please be prepared to drop off or pick up medications (including over-the-counter). • Medicine can be brought to school the day before school starts. Please call to let me know that you will be coming. • Did you know you can print your student’s shot record from Skyward? Under the Health Information tab, click Display Options, then select Show Vaccinations from the drop down menu, then click the Print icon. Have a safe, healthy, and wonderful summer!
