This is week 7 of 10 in Term 4 2020! Kia ora te whānau, EOTC EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM: I am a born optimist, a half cup full type of person that has sure been a good thing this year with COVID 19 coming along and disrupting a lot of the usual events and opportunities we would normally have had here at school. We have looked for the silver linings of this experience and found some in one of the most affected areas of our curriculum, EOTC. Our teachers are resourceful and looked at what could still be achieved exploring our local opportunities and wider but within an easy day trip range. They have planned two exciting opportunities for the students in Kahikatea Team and Kawaka teams. We are so fortunate to live where we do and to have so many educational and recreational opportunities within easy reach. Kahikatea team, the Y5 and 6s, are off to Rotorua. No it is not the Snow camp that was planned but they are going to love this experience tod ay. They are visiting The Buried Village which is New Zealand's most visited Archaeological Site, where stories of the 1886 Mt Tarawera Eruption come to life. This is where the famous Pink and White terraces were. They were reportedly the largest silica sinter deposits on earth and considered the 8th Wonder of the World and were the original New Zealand tourism destination until they were buried in the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera. After this the Y5/6s head to the Redwood Tree walk to ...“Enjoy a tree top walk amongst the majestic and magical 75-metre-tall redwoods as you walk across eco-suspended bridges and platforms intricately designed to honour and accentuate the stunning natural environment. This venue is described as one of the best tree top walks in NZ. The walk is 700m long, has 28 swing bridges that are 20m high amongst 118 year old Redwood trees. It is a unique bird’s eye view of the forest below and the treetops above. Newslsflash! The trip has been postponed due to the heavy rain and thundertorms forecast today. Watch out for the postponement date. KAWAKA team: Wellington was the planned destination for the Y7s this year and when bookings had to be made earlier in the year, there were too many uncertainties with COVID to go ahead. Instead, our resourceful Miss Horn created CAMP LOCAL! An action packed week that incorporates many challenging and varied options for the Y7s. DAY1 – Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain– right on our back doorstep is this wonderful ecological island. The children saw a tuatara eat a bird! Apparently an incredibly rare sight. DAY 2 – Horse riding and Air Rifles at Karamu – the children loved this, 60 horses! DAY3 – Today – Hamilton Zoo and the Hamilton Courts DAY 4 – Mountain Bike riding up on the Sainsbury road track and second option kayaking at Raglan. DAY 5 – Caving and Abseiling at Karamu finishing off with a camp out at Cullen’s farm on Friday night. Aren’t we so fortunate to have all of these options on our doorstep. Thank you to our Kahikatea and Kawaka teachers for their organisation of these events and all of the parents who have supported them to make their plans happen. What a great community we live in. We appreciate your support very much. TEACHER ONLY DAY: MONDAY NOVEMBER 30TH: Please note that the school will be closed for instruction on the 30th November as we plan for 2021. This day is one of the teacher only days we were awarded as part of the accord.
