Origins OF How did January get its name? We all know the saying, “Thirty days hath November, April, May JANUARY and December. All the rest have 31, except for February.” Growing Fun up, the calendar was always the same, but in the time of Romans and before, that was not the case. It wasn’t until 1582 that the current Around calendar as we know it was adopted. Our calendar is called the Gregorian calendar named after Pope Gregory, and it was a reform of the calendar before that called the Julian calendar. This is important to know because the initial calendar did the not start with January, it started with March. January was added by Numa Pompilius in around 690 B.C. The main difference between these two calendars is that the Julian calendar was 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar. Veraden This caused the Julian calendar to gain 3 days every four centuries. This was corrected by the Gregorian calendar which year numbers are evenly divisible by 100 except for the leap year which is divisible by 400. But what does this have to do with the name January? It has been widely debated over time whether the name January came from the Roman God Janus, which was the God of new beginnings and endings. This allowed for the Romans to prepare for the Spring in the coming of the new year.
