SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER PRIMARY SCHOOL 38-50 Swift Street, BALLINA NSW 2478 PO Box 1647, Ballina NSW 2478 Phone: (02) 66863370 Web: www.balp@lism.catholic.edu.au Email: balp@lism.catholic.edu.au MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Week 6 – Term 1 2021 Dear Parents and Friends, This week Matt, Kristie and I joined with our Parish Priests and the Principals and APs from our other parish schools, Holy Family and Xavier Catholic College, to engage in the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Education Conference. Over the two days of the conference, we explored a number of key themes that will guide us to improve the quality of our Catholic schools in terms of our educational and spiritual environments for the benefit of our students, staff and school families as a faith-filled community. Each year we develop a School Improvement Plan (SIP) as a matter of quality practice for the purpose of evaluating the standards of our school and working towards improving our practices. This improvement plan always focuses on Literacy, Numeracy, faith-life and organisation at a whole-school level, and is complemented by a number of smaller focus points on other aspects of school life. The main areas of focus in our 2021 SIP are: improving learning through quality and timely feedback; and strengthening our knowledge and practice of our school’s traditions. We have already commenced work on these and will continue to evaluate their impact throughout the year. We commenced our Learning Enhancement Program this week. Formal notification of children who have been selected for their talents in the respective fields will be sent home to parents early next week. I appreciate the responses from parents and support for this program which is designed to provide further instruction for those students with extremely high aptitude in the relevant areas of the curriculum. As a Catholic school, we primarily support fundraising through Catholic associations such as Caritas and Catholic Mission. Pre-existing Parish structures in areas of need enable us to support communities directly. Last week we were notified of an opportunity to support one of our Year 5 students, Violet, in her efforts to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation in the World’s Greatest Shave. Violet has already raised over $1000 for this cause and given that we are all in some way connected to someone, whether they be family or friends, who have been affected by cancer, we have decided to hold a coloured hair day next Friday for a gold coin donation to support this cause. On Thursday afternoon next week, Violet will have her hair shaved to lead us into our Coloured Hair Day on the Friday (March 12th). If your child wishes to participate, they will need to bring a gold coin to contribute to the cause. All other correct school uniforms are to be worn. Peace in Christ, Daniel Gubby Principal Growth Through Love & Loyalty

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL… Dear Families and Friends, Parent-Teacher Collaborative Meetings Essentially the core question of any parent-teacher collaborative meeting should simply be: “How can we work together to ensure the best outcomes for the child?” The education of children is a team sport and it is important to remember that parent, teacher and students are all on the same team, working toward achieving the same goal. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are not expected to attend. Students in Years 3 to Year 6 are expected to attend. During the Parent-Teacher collaborative meetings we would like to: - Celebrate your child's strengths - Share areas for improvement and growth - Determine achievable goals with (or for) your child To make the most of these collaborative meetings, parents may wish to consider the following questions: 1. What are your child's strengths? 2. Where would you like to see your child develop further this year? 3. Is there anything you would like the teacher to know about your child that may impact on their learning? We look forward to setting your child’s goals together to ensure teachers and parents are on the same page throughout the year. Please click on the following link and enter your details to schedule a collaborative meeting with your child's classroom teacher. Link: Parent-Teacher Collaborative Meetings. Bookings will close on Friday, 12th March at 4pm. Digital Technologies across the Curriculum This term Year 5 are exploring the growth and survival of living things and how their adaptations over time suit their environment. Students will investigate how changes to the physical environment impact on the growth and survival of plants. As part of this learning, students programmed a microbit, using block-based visual programming, to monitor and record data for soil moisture. Third Week of Lent We are now in the third week of Lent with the Project Compassion story of Oliva, a 22-year-old woman from Tanzania. She did not have the opportunity to go to school and was embarrassed that she was unable to read, write or count. As an adult, her business was losing money because she couldn’t add up her money and give the right change to customers. Then Oliva enrolled in Caritas Australia’s literacy and numeracy classes. She also set up a home classroom to teach her neighbours, for free, because they were too shy to attend larger classes. Oliva has now graduated, attendance at her classes are growing, her kiosk is thriving and she is helping her children with their homework. She aims to become a pastor and run for leadership in the next local election to help her community to ‘Be More.’ Year 6 Incitare Retreat The Incitāre retreat on Tuesday was an inspiring day for the ten Year 6 students who were fortunate to attend. Please keep an eye out for their articles in upcoming newsletters. These students will help Mrs Jelfs to plan and run a retreat for the rest of Year 6. Growth Through Love & Loyalty
Praying with Music ● Whole Heart (Hillsong Worship) - The more we seek God’s grace, the more God’s gifts are revealed to us. Let us use this beautiful worship hymn as a way to reflect and unpack the theme 'Wholehearted'. ● Here I Am Lord (Cover) - As we continue to fast during Lent, this classic hymn is a welcome gift to those of us missing music at Mass. Sacrament of Confirmation (Thursday, 10th June 2021) Please note the change of date for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Greg Homeming has changed the sacramental years. From this year, Year 3 students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Starting next year students in Year 4 will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion and Reconciliation. St Francis Xavier Parish has consulted with schools and some representatives of the parent body and has decided to place the preparation of the Sacraments back into the schools starting this year with the Sacrament of Confirmation. More information will follow regarding this program. We know that some families enrolled and prepared their children last year and we will send further information home soon. Across Grade Masses As we are unable to hold the whole school in the Church for Mass due to COVID guidelines we will have 2 Masses this term.
