Newsletter – June 2018 Club News . Course With only 23.6 mm of rainfall, May 2018 has been our driest month since April 2017 (9.2mm). Over the past month we have had 22 “dry days” where no rainfall was received. As with most springs here on the East Coast of Ireland, this period has been extremely challenging from a turfgrass management perspective. 2018 saw a late spring (3 weeks behind 2017 using the Growth Degree day model) in conjunction with prolonged east winds, rising temperatures of late and high Evapotranspiration loses. During the past 3 weeks the links has become dry in many places despite trying our best to keep areas hydrated. It really has been a round the clock experience but with soil surfactants (wetting agents) and accurate watering I believe we hopefully should have saved many areas from becoming water repellent (Hydrophobic) Once the rainfall does arrive, we should see a quick change of colour throughout the links and a little less stressed looking turf on the links. With the dry conditions, we have unfortunately had a short term temporary buggy ban for the past couple of days. This is ultimately to protect the fine links grasses on your golf course, which does not like enduring heavy mechanical traffic in the heat of the afternoon sun, especially in drought conditions. Once the colour goes from the turf, the links grasses go into a dormant state and are liable to become damaged with cart traffic. This can also be said for course maintenance traffic- however the team need to transport the equipment necessary for hand watering to various parts of the links. They are also instructed to drive in the semi roughs only to minimise any possible damage whilst carrying out their other daily duties such as greens mowing etc. 1
Council Corner Golf Buggies A new fleet of 8 buggies have been ordered by the Club from Clubcar. These buggies will be fitted with GPS and Geo- fencing technology. This will give golfers yardage information and a map of the hole but will also allow the Club to mark off areas on the links that buggies are not allowed to access. This allows us to protect certain sensitive areas around the links from buggy traffic. Bye Laws Council have recently reviewed the Bye Laws and made some minor amendments to them. These are posted on the Club noticeboard for Members information and a copy will be sent to Members following posting of these Bye Laws for 7 days. Halfway House The starter hut has been moved from its previous location beside tee 1 to a new location beside tee 10 and work has been completed to convert it into a halfway house where golfers can buy refreshments during their round. Further work will be carried out in the coming weeks to provide new cladding for the hut and a new and more appropriate surface will be provided around the hut for golfers to enjoy their refreshments. General Data Protection Legislation (GDPR) Members may be aware of the new GDPR legislation that came into effect on 25 May 2018. This relates to your data and how the Club manages it. The Club policy in relation to this has been posted on the noticeboard and, separate to this newsletter, a Member information statement will be circulated to you all by email. You will notice at the end of this newsletter that you have the option to opt out of the receipt of all future newsletters. Ladies Club Teams Update: Congratulations to our Island Senior Ladies, who once again have qualified for the All-Ireland Senior Cup final after a dramatic finish in Malahide last week. The Finals will be held in August in Belfast at Knock Golf Club. (Not Mayo!!) We will be calling on Members to make an effort to go and support the Ladies. More about that later. For information: The Island Golf Club have agreed to host the above East Leinster Senior Cup Qualifier in May 2020. Congratulations also to our Senior Foursomes Team who qualified for the Leinster Final to be played at Castleknock on the 30 June. Our Revive Active Team and the Mary McKenna Trophy teams have both got through to the next round. Matches Scheduled for June: Irish Mixed: 5 June v St Anne’s Revive Active: 10 June v Skerries Fingal Seniors: 25 June Again I would ask Members to check the noticeboard in the Ladies locker room for times and venues. Junior Girls Update: The Junior Girls 2018 Programme is on the Junior noticeboard in the corridor and in the Ladies Locker Room. We are looking forward to the Girls Coaching which will be starting on Tuesdays from 6.30pm until 7.30pm. Coaching with the Pro will focus on the following areas of play: Tuesday 5th: Full Swing 2
Tuesday 12th: Chipping and Bunker Tuesday 19th. Putting Tuesday 26th On Course Play The Junior Girls will be still at school in June, but if any of them have finished their homework, and they are allowed to stay after coaching, we can play some golf with them. If you have a daughter or granddaughter who would like to join us, please contact the Office. Competitions: On June 7 we have our Pink Day, which is a Ladies Open Fourball. This Open Day is in aid of Breast Cancer Research, and always enjoys tremendous support. We also have a nine hole competition for the men in the afternoon and we would ask any available men to play for this very deserving cause. We hold a ‘BUMPER RAFFLE’ after play and once again we would very much appreciate any members donating something for same. Lady Captain’s Day and Dinner: First day of Lady Captains is on the 28 June. The Second day and Dinner is on the 7 July. Just to remind ladies again the reason for change of date for second day, as per email to all Ladies on 7 February, which read: “At the Fixtures Meeting last Saturday 3 February, we discovered that the Ladies Senior Foursomes Finals clashed again this year with the 2nd Lady Captain’s Day. In order to allow the Senior Foursomes Ladies, their Managers and supporters the opportunity to play in Lady Captain’s second day and attend the Dinner, we have (in conjunction with the Men’s Club) swapped the present 2nd Lady Captain’s Day (i.e. 30 June) for the following Saturday 7 July, in order to try and facilitate everybody. This was agreed at a Ladies Committee Meeting.” Last year we facilitated the Ladies by getting permission for them to play the second round of Lady Captain’s day on the Friday, but this was not an option this year as Team Managers felt it was too much which resulted in they being tired, no supporters, and then they rushed back on the Saturday evening for Lady Captain’s Dinner - hence the change. Handicap reductions will apply on first day of Lady Captain’s and Members must have five 18 hole single cards in since the previous July to be eligible to win. Please check noticeboard in Ladies Locker room for eligibility to win Lady Captain’s Prize. Friday Night Invitation 9 Hole Competition: These are in full swing ably run by our President, Mary. Bookings for all Friday nights in operation two weeks in advance – these nights are great fun and a wonderful opportunity to invite your friends to play The Island.
