17 August 2018 SJI International Term 2 – Issue 23 Important Change to 2019 Calendar As you are all aware, we published the provisional 2019 Calendar dates some time back. One of the guiding principles in drawing up the calendar is scheduling the 1 week September break to coincide with the MOE September break (we also schedule the 1 week October break to coincide with the other international schools in Singapore). This holiday spacing also has massive educational benefits, as it allow us to break up the 16-week Term 2 into three smaller parts, with regular opportunities for both students and teachers to recharge and consolidate. We have been informed that the September break in 2019 will now take place from 9 to 13 September – the 2nd week in September (it is normally always the 1st week in September). We have thus made the decision to move our September break in 2019. This means that we will now celebrate Teacher Day on Friday, 6 September, and the September holiday will run from Saturday, 7 September, to Sunday, 15 September. This change impacts both the Elementary and High School calendars. The other holidays remain as published. Please see a copy of the latest 2019 School Calendar in this week’s newsletter. Term 2 Activities Start this Monday - 20 August I am looking forward the commencement of Term 2 Activities, starting this coming Monday, 20 August. Excluding Service Learning, which also involves the majority of students, our students have 120 different Activities available. This is going to be another exciting Term. Hari Raya Haji - School Closed on Wednesday, 22 August Hari Raya Haji (also known as Eid ul-Adha or Bakri Id) takes place this coming Wednesday, 22 August. School is closed for this National holiday. Hari Raya Haji is celebrated on the 10th day of the last month of the Islamic Calendar, and is celebrated to commemorate the sacrifice of Ishamel by Abraham. This is a major festival for Muslims around the world. Mosques are decorated with bright lights and other decorations and followers wake up early in the morning to offer their prayers before sunrise. After that, special meals are prepared. People of all ages wear new clothes and exchange gifts on this day. I would like to wish all of our Muslim families Selamat Hari Raya Haji. Grade 7 Bintan Charity Week Well done to all Grade 7 students who have been involved in a multitude of activities over the past week. The school has been buzzing with activities each break and lunchtime. All money raised goes towards our Grade 7 Service Learning Programme, which works to raise funds for our partner pre-schools/orphanages on Bintan Island (each Tutor Group is linked to one of the pre-schools and orphanages, as part of their Grade 7 Service Learning programme). A very big Thank you goes to each of the Grade 7 Tutors and the Head of Grade 7 (Ms. Nina Jaworski), all of whom have been very involved in making this week possible. See this week’s News and Events for more details.
17 August 2018 SJI International Term 2 – Issue 23 Junior Debate Team Emerge Champions! Congratulations to our Junior Debate team (Hoong Jun Ray (10 RegT), Timothy Chee (10RegU), Natanya Tan (8MT1) and Riya Chamola (8MG2) who won the Gold Division of the recent Hwa Chong Invitational debate competition. Jun Ray was also awarded 2nd best speaker of the tournament, while Timothy was ranked 3rd best speaker. Please see this week’s News and Events (on our Parent Portal) for more details. Thank you to teacher-in-charge, Mr Nicholson, for his support throughout the tournament. Alumni News We have two exciting Alumni announcements. Firstly, Victoria Lim, one of our Alumni from the Class of 2016, has embarked on an award-winning Arctic expedition. This coming Saturday morning (18 August) sees our U19 Football Team taking on an Alumni Team on the Lower Field, starting at 10 am. All are invited to this exciting event. Recent Increase in Number of Students Falling Ill In the past few weeks SJI International has seen an increase in the number of students exhibiting flu-like symptoms. General symptoms include the following: sore throat; headache; body ache; runny and blocked nose; and fever or chills. Symptoms are consistent with that of a flu infection. Students are advised to consult their doctors if presented with such symptoms. It is also important to maintain good hygiene and infection control measure (i.e. regular handwashing; drinking lots of water; wearing a mask; and/or staying at home when symptoms are acute). Night at the Theatre SJI International is hosting our annual A Night at the Theatre Concert this coming Thursday, 23 August. This event takes place in the Assembly Hall, starting at 19:00 hrs. Please see details of this wonderful event in this week’s newsletter. This is always a highlight of the SJI International calendar and I encourage you to join us for this wonderful event. Tickets are available at the High School Reception. Teacher Appreciation Day Thank you to all those parents who have already volunteered to help and donated towards this year’s Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day – taking place on Friday, 31 August. I have been asked to remind all contributors that all donations should reach SJI International by Friday, 24 August. Please see the PSG Notice, later in this week’s newsletter, for more details. 17 August 2018 Term 2 – Issue 23 SJI International We Need Your Help – SJI International Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day Dear Parents/Guardians, Through the support and generosity of our parent community, the annual Teacher's Day and Staff Appreciation Lunch has become a well-loved tradition at SJI International. Hosted by PSG, the event celebrates the hard work and contributions of our teachers and staff (including the security guards and cleaners). This year's lunch will be held at the Assembly Hall on Friday, 31 August 2018 from 1:30pm to 3:00pm and will feature a catered lunch, drinks, desserts and games. As in the past, we are again counting on the tremendous generosity of our whole parent community to make this event possible. Thank you to those parents who responded to last week's appeal. We are pleased to report that we now have enough volunteers for this year's event. We are, however, still appealing for parents to donate towards this event. Parents can assist in the following ways: a) Donations of wine, prosecco, cider and/or beer for the bar; b) Donating home-made desserts or a baked item, one of the highlights of the previous lunches (awaiting confirmation); c) We also organise a Lucky Draw. We thus invite parents to contribute donations toward our Lucky Draw prizes. In the past we have focused mainly on lifestyle prizes such as dining, spa and shopping vouchers or events which give our teachers a flavour of Singapore and hopefully give many who live away from their own homes a unique experience and lasting memories of Singapore. Parents wishing to contribute to this event by donating items for this wonderful event can REGISTER HERE and we'll be in touch shortly. For those who wish to donate Lucky Draw prizes or Wine and Beer for the bar, please leave your donations at the reception and mark them clearly with "Teacher's Day" stating your name (if you wish) by the 24 August 2018. We thank you and look forward to your positive response. Warm regards, Beatrice on behalf of the PSG
