Students - What is one thing that is going well with virtual learning that you would like to see continue next year The teachers having optional video calls so that if you need help Assignments are more organized this year but don't want other students in the video call, you can do that. I like that I have the BEST teachers I notice that I have developed independent THE TEACHERS ARE VERY HELPFUL AND UNDERSTANDING learning skills when doing my assignments. The teachers are good at answering My teacher's Weekly Planner. It makes it easier to keep me organized questions through email and google meets. It is helpful. Flexible due dates, so that if I'm struggling with an assignment, I don't have to stress about needing to Doing work whenever I want get it done by the next day. Social Google meet times I LIKE THE WAY OUR SCHEDULE IS SO FLEXIBLE AND WE ARE IT'S NEW, WHICH MEANS IT'S A NEW OPPORTUNITY. I GET ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH OUR TEACHERS REGARDING ANY TO STAY HOME, AND DO MY WORK IN MY OWN PACE, AND I I like that im home and CAN TAKE BREAKS ALMOST WHENEVER. QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS. i get to eat when every i want. I like how Im able to easily contact my teacher regarding help for certain things. I like having flexibilty in my daily schedule
Students - What do you not like about virtual school right now? that when I have a question we can't just go over it and that i like seeing my friends in school i am not getting that much social interaction, I DON'T LIKE THAT I CANT SEE MY FRIENDS OR ANY OF MY and i am not able to hang out with my friends TEACHERS BUT I KNOW THAT IN ORDER TO STAY SAFE AND MAKE SURE THERE SAFE I HAVE TO BE AT HOME. The fact that im not in school cause sometimes i get distracted by my siblings. its hard to ask teacher for help when their Something I don't like about virtual school is that not face to face with you I THINK THAT TEACHER'S SHOULD we don't have a lot of human interaction with BE A BIT MORE SPECIFC IN THE teachers and students. DAILY LESSON PLANS BECAUSE Sometimes teachers need to give a little more WE CAN'T ASK QUESTIONS IN No In-person communication with my instruction because when we're learning a PERSON. friends also no recess with my friends new topic, the directions of the assignment aren't enough. THE WORKLOAD (SOME CLASSES HAVE It's difficult to make friends, yes we go in ENTIRELY TOO MUCH WORK ESPECIALLY breakout rooms, but that's for schoolwork. It's I would like more meets with teachers, more CLASSES WHERE TEACHERS PRIORITIZE also uncomfortable to be able to just talk interaction between students, and maybe some THEIR CLASS OVER ANY OTHER CLASS because it's really awkward. On top of that VLA clubs. STUDENTS HAVE) can also be really hard to focus on my stuff. It can be an issue when I have my parents Virtual students don't get that much around, who expect a lot from me, which is I don't like spending so much because I'm "smart". It can be really opportunities like kids who go in the time on my chromebook pressuring and stressful. school buildings. looking at the screen for hours.

Parent/Guardian Feedback
Parent/Guardian Feedback
Parent/Guardian - What is working well with your child’s education that you would like to see continued? Speech and OT are I think the communication from my son’s teachers has been wonderful! His teachers have kept in Pretty much everything. :) working very well! Both therapists are always well contact w/ him and with me to make sure he’s on I was pleased to see that the teacher reads to the class each day. track and to make sure I’m aware of his progress. I My child also seems to thrive in having “breakout rooms”. It seems prepared and the call is productive. have really appreciated that. to add some socialization time with friends (like recess). I know it’s not necessarily “educational” but I do think it helps HE IS BECOMING MORE CONFIDENT developmentally. I’M VERY PLEASED WITH HOW EVERYTHING IS WITH WORKING INDEPENDENTLY. GOING. MY SON IS LEARNING AND IS My child has been making excellent academic progress this COMPLETING HIS WORK. HE ALSO IS ABLE TO year, has been becoming more independent in his learning, and TALK WITH HIS TEACHER WHEN HE NEEDS TO. I Teacher communications have been enjoys his class meets. We are overall extremely satisfied with AM ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIS TEACHER key to understanding expectations the VLA program and LOVE his teacher. AND SHE DOES GET BACK IN A TIMELY MANNER. as well as knowing how to help reinforce learning at home - our SHE’S DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH current teacher gives a view of the Ability to learn free of distractions Teacher involvement is awesome! EVERYTHING. AND I ALSO AM GLAD I WENT next week’s lessons WITH VLA BECAUSE HE GETS 4 DAYS ON INSTRUCTION INSTEAD OF JUST 2. Teachers who respond quickly, do one on one meets to help answer questions, consistent with their live meets and expectations OUR TEACHER HAS ESTABLISHED AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE MY CHILD FEELS The daily morning meets are great as well CONNECTED TO HER CLASSMATES AS WELL AS HER TEACHER. SHE HAS SET UP A Her IEP teachers as the small groups. The amount of work STRUCTURE THAT HAS ALLOWED MY DAUGHTER TO BE VERY INDEPENDENT WITH HER involvement has seems appropriate as well as the variety of LEARNING. SHE KNOWS WHAT IS EXPECTED OF HER AND SHE WORKS TO MEET THE been a blessing! apps used. The teachers are available every GOALS SHE HAS SET FOR HERSELF . I AM HOPEFUL TO SEE HER INDEPENDENCE AS A day via email or office hours. And they are LEARNER AND LOVE FOR LEARNING CONTINUE IN THE COMING YEARS supportive of clubs for the kids to socialize. Google Classroom and Infinite Campus allows me to see what assignments she has completed and her grades, helps with accountability HALLENGING HIM IN A GOOD WAY. My child is very focused right now. I am very satisfied!! The small groups are great
Parent/Guardian - What is challenging with your child’s education that you would like to see improved? BETTER WAY TO MONITOR WORK COMPLETION. I don’t think they are given enough work to do. It concerns me that he’s not getting the same education he would in school. My child is hesitant to contact the teachers during office hours if he needs help or doesn’t understand something. I’m not sure if that is just his personality (maybe he was reluctant to ask for help in the classroom?) or if he finds the office hours inconvenient MORE INSTRUCTION IS NEEDED. NOT JUST A VIDEO TO WATCH AND BE QUIZZED ON. WE NEED AN ACTUAL TEACHER TO GIVE INSTRUCTION AND THE ABILITY FOR QUESTIONS TO BE ASKED Teachers should all have one way to post assignments and be consistent with it every week. IMMEDIATELY DURING INSTRUCTION. I do not feel that enough instruction is given for a lesson. I am modifying the lessons to fit his Childs motivation, lack of connection to other students capabilities as well as researching additional resources to use in teaching the lesson to him myself so that it is productive. Mostly the lack of physical interaction among the pupils More one on one time to focus on what she has questions on. I understand it is hard to get all kids to participate but I have a child who is doing super great with the education but completely avoiding participation in Having set times to login with teachers. I figured there would be more the calls. It would be nice if there was some way to help encourage the aspect flexibility but we have figured out how to manage. It also allows for of participation. I fear when he returns to class which will be a new school he consistency for my child. will struggle BOTH OF MY STUDENTS COMPLAINED OF TOO MUCH WORK. I THINK HAVING DIGITAL ACCESS FOR TEACHERS LENDS ITSELF TO EASE OF CREATING UNNECESSARY BUSY WORK THAT WOULD NOT NORMALLY BE SEEN IN A BRICK/MORTAR, PAPER-BASED SYSTEM. Teachers provide deadlines for work completion however grades are not posted for weeks. Questions are provided in students work that goes unanswered so the student does not learn how they got things wrong.
Changes for Next Year • Registration process involving counselors, administrators and prior teachers to determine if VLA is an appropriate educational environment for the student • Required Google Meets • Combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction • Teacher identification of blended learning models • Change in structure of the High School VLA • Teacher use of blended learning strategies and structure • Grid Method, Choice Boards, Menus, Playlists • Better communication and feedback between teacher & student, teacher & parents, administrator & parents. • Teachers will be teaching students across the district, not just in their home building • VLA pods will be created in some buildings to house the VLA teachers, new technology will be added to these pods. Allows more space in the building for face-to-face classrooms. • Adoption of more robust Learning Management System (LMS) • Incorporation of current PLSD online offerings into the VLA (Computer Science, CCP, Apex courses)
Guiding Principles • All students and families will have access to high quality, research-based educational materials and to the supports needed to successfully access those materials. • Students will have access to meaningful/high-quality educational materials that align to Ohio’s standards. • The structure of the Virtual Learning Academy will consist of both synchronous and asynchronous learning and students will be required to attend Google Meets with teachers. • Students and teachers will maintain a personal connection that supports necessary, rigorous academic work in a manner that is respectful of students’ contexts (their mindset, feelings, responsibilities, home considerations, etc.). • Simplicity is best during this time—simplicity of the framework, of communication structures, and of expectations. • Support the whole child—their mental health, nutritional needs, and safety needs. • Parents and other caregivers need access to clear information and ample resources. • Teachers may need support, encouragement, and compassion to ensure their success and resilience.
Educator Commitments • Provide both synchronous and asynchronous instructional opportunities for students • Provide a range of meaningful learning opportunities and resources that engage and meet the needs of all learners. • Be available to students and families via phone (3CX on phones or Chrome app), text (through Talking Points), email, Google Meet, LMS for a similar amount of time as traditional schools. ◦ Electronic communication platforms will be used in accordance with District guidelines. • Provide feedback to students in a timely manner. • Collaborate with colleagues (Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Librarians, etc) to address needs that arise along the way. • Participate in required weekly TBT meetings with their co-teachers, grade level teams, departments and/or other collaboration groups. ◦ The exact days/times will be determined at the building level by VLA Leader. • Communicate with the PLSD Virtual Learning Academy Leader. • Connect families with educational resources that support English Language Learners (including necessary language supports) and students with IEPs/504s. • Complete all required tasks, including verifying attendance, providing instruction via the learning management system for the VLA and through instructional videos and/or live instruction/office hours on Google Meet, checking on students’ emotional wellbeing, and offering feedback on student learning.
Student and Family Commitments As students and families are enrolling into the PLSD Virtual Learning Academy, are agreeing to the following commitments: • One year enrollment into the PLSD Virtual Learning Academy • Follow the syllabus and monitor the progress of your child. • Completing assigned activities to the greatest extent possible. • Accountable for completing and submitting lessons, activities, assessment in a timely fashion in alignment with the classroom syllabus. • Attend all required Google Meets (whole class, small group, targeted intervention/enrichment) • Having students establish and follow regular daily routines to the greatest extent possible. • Ensuring students get enough sleep. • Designating a specific space to work on virtual learning academy activities. • Setting sensible time limits for students’ technology use. • Reviewing communication from the District and buildings as frequently as possible, but at least weekly. • Discussing remote learning experiences and needs and communicating these with our staff. • Bring students into the physical building for assessment purposes (local, state and national testing) when there is not a virtual option.

Course Offerings High School • Due to the low number of interested families we are recommending the high school move to a hybrid level approach • Core classes could be taken virtually • English Langauge Arts • Math • Science • Social Studies • Electives would be offered only face to face in the buildings.
Exceptional Student Services • Gifted Services Gifted Services will be provided in the VLA. The service will be the same, but the delivery of it might look different. For example, a student who qualifies for Gateway will be offered gifted services in math and reading, but will not be offered gifted science or social studies if they are not identified in those areas. • Special Education Services Services will be offered, similar to this year on a case by case basis as all IEPs are specific to the individual student needs. • English Language Services Services will be offered, similar to this year with support virtually through Google Meet. The EL teacher will work with the VLA teachers to support EL accommodations.
Concerns for 2021-2022 Items we are still looking into: • Number of students that are interested in enrolling in 2021-2022 • Elective courses we can offer virtually for grades 7-8 • Lower the number of students, the less options we can offer • High School daily hybrid model instead of a fully virtual option • Transportation concerns • Lack of an IRN for the virtual learning academy (organizational purposes)
Moving Forward We will……. • Continue forward with the original timeline and plan for feedback • Release our updated VLA plan in late March • Release final course offering plan for junior high school & high school with the VLA plan • Request parents register for VLA 2021-2022 in April • Start VLA staffing process with HR Department • Develop summer learning opportunites for VLA teachers.
