REOPENING PLAN Dear Saint Andrew’s School Community, As COVID-19 has proven, we cannot predict what lies ahead. Our lives have changed almost daily, and Scots have pivoted and responded by affirming what is most important to us--building a community of learners, providing excellence in education, and nurturing each student in Mind, Body, and Spirit. Our school administrators have been working hard to reimagine and transform the Saint Andrew’s student experience for 2020-2021 and are pleased to share with you our plan for how we intend to begin the school year in August while prioritizing the safety of our school community. We remain confident that--local conditions permitting--we would resume campus operations for all students with student orientations the week of August 17, and the first day of class for Lower and Middle Schools on Wednesday, August 19. Upper School students are currently scheduled to begin class on Monday, August 24. Over last spring, our faculty at Saint Andrew’s have proven that we are leaders in innovative instruction and the integration of academic technology to promote student learning, and we are prepared to deliver high-quality instruction in a manner that ensures every student’s success. We are looking forward to saying hello again. In the following publication, we have set out plans for on-campus learning and distance learning. Families are asked to share their initial preference for a return to on-campus learning or learning at home for the opening of school. This preference is not binding, but is important to help us plan for serving all families come the fall. To do so, please login to your parent MySA account and complete the SA Reopening Preference form. More specific divisional information will be forthcoming, and we will offer virtual parent gatherings to answer your questions during the week of July 20. As we advance in uncertain times, Saint Andrew’s remains a leader in independent education in the state of Florida and beyond. In all that we do, from chapel, to advisory, to athletics and the arts, we strive to uphold our obligation to help students reach their potential, and to build a strong, inclusive community striving for justice and peace. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Ethan Shapiro Head of School Saint Andrew’s School Reopening Plan 2020-2021

We have paid particular attention to resources and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, The Florida Department of Health, The Florida Council of Independent Schools, The National Association of Independent Schools, The National Association of Episcopal Schools, and The Association of Boarding Schools. Our pre-K students will learn in a classroom with a small group of their peers (11-12) and one of our excellent Early Childhood teachers. Pre-K students will read and tell stories, make art, play music, learn world languages, do experiments, and engineer robots with the support of the specialty teachers in their homeroom classrooms, with frequent breaks for recess, outdoor time, and physical education. SAOnCampus Middle School Our Middle School academic program is geared toward encouraging skills that we believe will enable students to be successful, culturally competent students. In order to meet the demands necessary for physical distancing and appropriate hygiene, the Middle School schedule will be adjusted to an alternating-day block schedule in which students take eight total classes with four classes scheduled each day for slightly longer periods of time. The schedule is intentionally designed to: . Allow teachers to provide inquiry style lessons that are aligned with the philosophy of the Middle Years Programme and best practices for instruction. . Limit transitions and allow for appropriate sanitation and disinfection measures between classes. . Support a smooth transition to learning at home for those who must do so for any given period of time. Within this schedule, students will continue coursework in English, World Language, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Physical Education, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Design. All courses will run for the full year except for Visual Arts and Design, which students will take for a semester each. We will also maintain our advisory program that provides students with a sense of belonging to a particular teacher and group of students. While the exact timings of the classes have yet to be determined, we anticipate that the start and end times of the school day will remain similar to the current Middle School schedule. Saint Andrew’s School Reopening Plan 2020-2021
SAOnCampus Upper School Students in our Upper School will engage with rich content in new and exciting ways, as teachers focus on the essential curriculum and support innovative and collaborative critical thinking. The Upper School schedule will be adjusted to an alternating-day block schedule in which eight class blocks are offered with four classes scheduled each day. This is similar to our current Tuesday-Friday schedule. Upper School students will continue to be scheduled for six classes. Indoor and outdoor study spaces will be available for students during free periods. Adjusting our schedule in this manner allows us to maximize our instructional spaces, limit transitions, provide appropriate sanitation and disinfection measures between classes, and support a smooth transition to learning at home. All College Guidance programming will continue to support the particular stage of your student’s journey through acceptance and graduation. Saint Andrew’s School Reopening Plan 2020-2021
SA@Home Saint Andrew’s is preparing for possible periods of interruption to on-campus learning as may be dictated by governmental authorities, public health officials, or our Operations, Health, and Safety Task Force. In the event campus operations must be modified, we will prioritize continuing to offer on-campus instruction for our youngest students, if possible. If campus operations must be suspended, we would transition to learning at home according to our SA@Home protocols, which will be finalized and shared with families before the start of school. Through a combination of synchronous (live) and asynchronous sessions, students will continue to receive high-quality instruction and personalized feedback to sustain their growth while learning at home. With the additional technology investment made for our youngest learners, we are now a fully 1:1 device school, with all students having what they need to succeed while learning at home. Our school schedules across divisions are designed to facilitate a smooth transition to learning at home, and we will operate according to the emerging best practices at each developmental level, focusing on maintaining strong emotional connections and rigorous academic standards.
