Principal’s Message Tēnā koutou katoa, Ki te kaupapa nunui o te wiki o te reo Māori Ki te korero Māori Ko tenei te wiki kawe e te taonga, te reo Māori Anei te whakatauki - ‘Ko taku reo, taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku mapihi mauria’ The last couple of weeks have been filled with many action-packed days, learning opportunities and student achievements. I encourage you to have a look at this newsletter to better understand all of the exciting activities in which our students are involved. It is that time of year when we are heading toward the culmination of learning and our senior students are working towards final projects and assessments. Although this year has been somewhat disrupted, we have every expectation that all of our students will earn the NCEA qualification they are working toward. Staff will ensure our students have every opportunity to be successful in 2020. We have a particularly strong focus on our Year 13 cohort who will be leaving us at the end of the year towards work, further training or tertiary study. As always, our approach to achievement goes hand in hand with a clear focus on wellbeing. This coming week we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week. Kia Kaha te reo Māori is the theme this year. ‘Kia Kaha’ means to ‘be strong’. So, when we say ‘Kia Kaha te reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'. The Māori Language Act 1987 declared Māori to be an official language of Aoteraoa. It is the foundational language of New Zealand, the ancestral language of the tangata whenua and one of the taonga guaranteed protection under the Treaty of Waitangi. We will spend next week encouraging each other to learn and use as much te reo Māori as possible. Last Wednesday night was our annual Prospective Parent/Students evening wherein next year’s year 9 students and their whānau had the opportunity to visit the college and meet some of the staff. It was wonderful to have so many new families in attendance and to feel the excited vibe around the school. We stayed just under the 100-person mark required by our current Alert level- 2 restrictions. Be reassured that we have already begun preparations for next year and are looking forward to welcoming new families and ensuring the transition to college is a smooth and happy one. We continue to work towards an embedded restorative culture where students are ‘in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing’, because we have high expectations for them and because they desire to work everyday to meet these expectations. You can support us by ensuring your child arrives at school every day on time, in the right uniform and ready to learn. As always, please be assured that my phone line is open. My door is open. Together we can continue to build and maintain a strong and vibrant school that serves our students and our community. Nga mihi nui, Amy Hacker Tumuaki/Principal
Year 13 Camp An amazing couple of days were enjoyed by the Year 13 students in Raglan. On arrival we were supplied a very nice BBQ lunch by Perry Group. We then booked into the Raglan Holiday Park in a lovely new complex and got ready for our first activity of stand-up paddleboard. The instructor (ex NZ champion Daniel Kereopa) was very impressed with our talent and willingness to learn. After a few hours in the estuary everyone plunged into the surf beach in their wetsuits and really enjoyed learning a new skill of surfing under the watchful eye of DK. After a gourmet nachos/ taco tea DK shared some of life stories which were really inspiring. We then did a night walk observing the stars. The weather continued to be amazing for our early morning mud run and after an efficient clean-up we went off to plant trees in Ashurst Park in Hamilton and learned more about trees from Hamilton City Council. Amazing group of young people doing amazing things.
Derived Grade Examinations Year 11, 12 and 13 subjects with external NCEA examinations in November must have a derived grade examination (previously called practice exams). These results are used in case of an emergency where a student is unable to sit the real NCEA exam ie due to illness, accident, natural disaster or bereavement. We are trialling a different system this year where teachers will hold the derived grade examination when the class has completed their learning and is ready. This means that over a space of five weeks students may be sitting examinations within their class time. These examinations may be held during the end of Term 3 (weeks 9 & 10) and start of Term 4 (weeks 1, 2 & 3). Students will attend school as normal during these examination weeks. If an examination is scheduled to go beyond 3:00pm the classroom teacher will let parents know that their students will be staying in school longer than usual. These examinations mirror the actual NCEA examinations so the same rules apply. If you are unsure if your student is sitting examinations please feel free to contact their classroom teachers or Achievement Dean. Rules and information for students about NCEA examinations can be found at https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/ncea-exams-and-portfolios/external/external-examination- information-for-students/ The timetable for the actual NCEA examinations can be found at https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/assets/qualifications-and-standards/qualifications/ncea/exams- and-portfolios/examination-timetable.pdf Senior Students Course Selection 2021 We are starting to build our 2021 timetable, as part of this students will be selecting subjects and options over the remaining terms. Community Notices Unwanted Bras – Please keep them coming in Ladies don’t send those unwanted bras to the landfill – send them to paradise. Paeroa College is now a drop off point for your unwanted bras. The Uplift Project set up by Liz Baker in 2005 sees her collating unwanted bras and sending them to the ladies in Fiji. Many women in the Pacific Islands often live without a bra. A new one is usually beyond the reach of most women, when their priority is to feed and educate the family. Please drop them into the front office at Paeroa College. Paeroa Community Support Trust – School Holiday Programme
