                   CHARAKTERYSTYKA PROJEKTU

1.1

In an increasingly globalised world it is paramount for the
competitiveness of the European industry that the employees
are capable of coming up with new innovative ways to define
concepts for new designs and for the subsequent production
process for new products faster than today. In addition there
is a tendency that the complexity of products is increasing
continuously. In order to master the complexity and at the
same time produce these faster it is essential that the
employees with different disciplinary and cultural backgrounds
are able to collaborate efficiently in short windows of
opportunities. Today European higher education institutions
typically educate students specialised in one discipline, and
as a consequence they typically have major challenges adapting
to multidisciplinary project teams when they enter the
European industry. They are typically lacking skills for
collaborating with professionals with different disciplinary
backgrounds, because they have difficulty in understanding the
significant design parameters for the other disciplines, and
as a consequence often are unable to come up with optimal
innovative solutions.

1.2

The underlying principles behind this proposal is to let
students with different backgrounds acquire a better
understanding and respect across disciplinary, national and
cultural borders. This shall be achieved by letting them work
jointly on the conception definition of the design and
intended subsequent production/development of new innovative
products. The groups will be composed such that the students
in each group will have different backgrounds, both
disciplinary and culturally. Students from different European
higher education institutions shall gather together at one
location (the first year it will be with Bang & Olufsen in
Denmark and for the following years this will also preferably
be on-site a real industrial organisation associated with one
or more of the educational institutions) for 3 intensive weeks
in a course where they shall form groups that shall solve
proof-of-concept of a new product and present their findings
to each other in plenum.

1.3

This IP will get IHA in closer contact to other ERASMUS
universities where it will be possible to establish either a
joint degree agreement or double diplomas. In addition we will
obtain close and specialized relations to a group consisting
of 4 to 6 partner institutions, with which we wish to develop
a close professional, educational and industry-related
cooperation as stated in the EPS. This project will also
engage the academic staff in professional and educational as
well as development-oriented cooperation with foreign partners
as desired in the IHA EPS. Finally this project will help
integrating international students with Danish students in
international courses and therefore increase the likehood of
their international interests as stated in the IHA EPS.
Finally the IHA EPS also mention explicitly arranging and
hosting Summer Schools for international and national students
once a year, and this IP fits perfectly into this plan. In
addition this IP is an important activity to make our students
more interested in carrying out a part of their studies abroad
and this is essential to reach the goal of 10 % of all our
students stated in the IHA EPS.

The EPS of Hanze University Groningen dictates that all
students should be well-prepared for a professional career in
an international perspective. This IP is a very good
opportunity to offer students an international experience. We
expect that it will be a good stimulus for students to do a
semester abroad at a later stage in their studies.
The proposed Erasmus IP is fully connected to the EPS at the
VSB-TU Ostrava. It presents the same aims like standard
international student exchange during their study. The
advantage of this activity is that it is concentrated into
short time period and is focused to multidisciplinary
collaboration in the international team of students.

University of Minho is undergoing a major transformation by
adapting its degree to Bologna format and policy. We have just
introduced our second cycle (Masters). The IP is a major
opportunity for our students to go abroad bringing a new
experience to them as aimed in the EPS. The IP will enable to
be acquainted with students that have different backgrounds
and cultures. Finally, the teaching staff will use these IP
opportunities to know about other approaches to computer
science teaching.

1.4.

Each institution shall provide one teacher and up to 5
students for these 3 weeks. The three weeks shall be formed as
a 5 ECTS point course for all the students participating and
their performance shall be evaluated at the end of the period.
Each group of students shall be formed by the teachers aiming
at having one student from each educational institution and
having the students spread as widely as possible across
disciplines. Thus, this will be Problem Based Learning (PBL)
in a nutshell where the students will have to solve problems
in groups that require the different disciplinary theories in
combination in order to be solved.

At IHA each of the studies are primarily mono-disciplinary,
except for a few courses early in the studies where
multidisciplinary collaboration is enforced. Thus, this IP is
ideal for the students towards the end of their studies
enabling more multidisciplinary thesis projects to be carried
out afterwards in collaboration with local industry and this
is a valuable outcome that may be exploited by a larger number
of IHA’s students.

Cracow University of Technology offers several courses in
engineering, including Automation and Robotics, and Management
and Production Engineering. The IP course will improve the
students’ skills to cooperate within the team formed to solve
the set task.

The School of Engineering of Hanze University Groningen offers
an international study programme ‚International Product Design
Engineering’. The School of Engineering is also a pioneer in
the field of ‚Human Technology’. Human Technology is a study
programme that focuses on product innovation and product
improvement that pay special attention to evaluating,
specifying, and tuning technical products to the needs of the
users. The technical products originate from the domains
engineering, built environment, and ICT.

The semester projects are the parts of curricula for all
students at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science at VSB-TU Ostrava. The proposed activities in the
frame of Erasmus IP fulfill the requirements of these semester
projects. The advantage of this IP is that the students will
work in international teams during this activity – this is the
best preparation for their future praxis in the industry (our
semester projects are normally focused to individual work of
each student).

For University of Minho the IP is an opportunity to have
students and teachers to follow the 3 weeks course. As
Europeans, nothing like a join together course to know about
other cultures and backgrounds. The IP fits into our second
cycle (MSc) as an extra course on vacation time to update
students with more specific subjects.

1.5

The 3 weeks shall be placed in a period that is common
vacation period for the students otherwise (most likely July
or August is the best option). It is envisaged that the
project will last for 3 years with different students every
year and taking place at different sites in different
countries with different product assignments. It would be
ideal if the site every year can be a real industrial site
where facilities (labs and accommodation) can be provided. In
addition to the teachers from the different educational
institutions it is envisaged that the local host will attend
the event with a small number of local facilitators/experts.
In general it is envisaged that the teaching team (including
local hosts) will act as facilitators for the groups of
students ensuring continued progress and group synergy. The
first year the local host will be Bang & Olufsen in Denmark
(alternative candidates for subsequent years could be Fiat,
Airbus, Phillips etc.).

The pedagogical and didactic approach to be taken is based on
integrated project based learning. Integrated learning
experiences are pedagogical approaches that foster the
learning of disciplinary knowledge simultaneously with
personal, interpersonal, and product and system building
skills. They incorporate professional engineering issues in
contexts where they coexist with disciplinary issues. For
example, students might consider the analysis of a product,
the design of the product, and the social responsibility of
the designer of the product, all in one exercise. In this case
industrial partners will be helpful in providing examples of
such exercises. Active learning methods engage students
directly in thinking and problem solving activities. There is
less emphasis on passive transmission of information, and more
on engaging students in manipulating, applying, analyzing, and
evaluating ideas. Active learning in lecture-based courses can
include such methods as partner and small-group discussions,
demonstrations, debates, concept questions, and feedback from
students about what they are learning. Active learning is
considered experiential when students take on roles that
simulate professional engineering practice, for example,
design-build projects, simulations, and case studies. See also
www.cdio.org for more information about the principles.

1.6

The level of the students in this project is a combination of
BSc and MSc students from the different partner institutions.
At each institution the teacher involved with this project
will select the students to attend the course based on the
skill level and the motivation to take part in a
multidisciplinary project as explained here. At IHA it is
envisaged that students will have to formally apply to attend
this course and the students will be evaluated and interviewed
in order to select the students that would be best for this
innovative and multidisciplinary environment. It is up to the
other project participants to judge whether they wish to
follow a similar selection scheme or have their own way of
selecting the students participating in the course.

  1.7
The relevance of this project are:

To strengthen the education of multidisciplinary
engineering at a European level producing new engineers
that will be more prepared for the challenges that are
        comming for the European industry.
To promote innovative ways of working in
multidisciplinary projects that will lead to a higher
quality of the European teaching in this area.
To develop synergies between the academic and the
industrial sector by close collaboration with industrial
parties in the intensive courses and ensuring the
relevance by letting the assignments being formed by
        industrial needs.
