Mike and Judi Edridge’s boat ‘‘The General’’ is a replica of Judi’s grandfather Arch Nicholls’ power boat ‘‘The Fay’’. ‘‘Judi’s grandfather, had a bach up Lake Rotoiti, it was a family bach right through to the early 80s and they spent a lot of time up there in that original boat,’’ Mike said. ‘‘We decided it would be pretty cool if we could find it [Fay] and do it up and float it on the lake again. But we couldn’t find the boat.’’ Instead, using original plans, they built a replica. ‘‘The old plans were pretty basic, not suitable for building a new boat, but enough to get the right dimensions,’’ Mike said. ‘‘We went for modern materials, but the same classic lines. ‘‘This boat was called the Gen- eral after Judi’s father who has The General is a replica of Judi Edridge’s grandfather’s boat, The Fay. 6 MARLBOROUGH MIDWEEK, FEBRUARY 27, 2020 neighbourly.co.nz Marlborough water mural unveiled SOPHIE TRIGGER A mural behind John’s Kitchen in Blenheim reminds Marlburians to be grateful for the ‘‘beautiful resource’’ of water. The nearly 10 metre long mural, Every drop counts, was commissioned by water engin- eering company SWE and created by Marlborough artist Gynelle Blake. After two years in the works, the mural was gifted to John’s Kitchen on Tuesday morning. The mural is made up of four 2440mm by 1220mm panels, and based on 15 individual photo- graphs of various bodies of water in Marlborough. Blake said the artwork was about celebrating water as a precious resource in the region. ‘‘It’s not just about one area in Marlborough or one body of water, it was about the fact that we are surrounded, and not just in Marlborough but in the world,’’ she said. ‘‘We are lucky to have these beautiful resources around. neighbourly.co.nz FEBRUARY 27, 2020, MARLBOROUGH MIDWEEK 7 Residents ‘learn to live’ with fire risk MAIA HART Homeowners at the base of the tinder-dry Wither Hills have ‘‘learned to live’’ with the fire risk each summer, as the upper tracks of the farm park are closed to the public. Taylor Pass Rd resident Ian Mitchell said he was happy the tracks were closed on Monday, but was still worried by the num- ber of gum and pine trees nearby. He was more concerned about the tress than the grass between his house and the trees. ‘‘Frankly, I’d like something else a little greener, that’s not conducive of fire,’’ he said. But Mitchell had full faith in Fire and Emergency should any fires break out. Fire and Emergency NZ Marl- borough principal rural fire officer John Foley said the clos- ure of the upper tracks was for the safety of the public, given there were no direct escape routes on the hills. ‘‘The grass that got wet in the Fire and Emergency NZ Marlborough principal rural fire officer John Foley said even with some rain on the weekend, the hills were still a fire risk.
