Matamata-Piako District Council was watching closely when the fires crept towards the spa town of Daylesford in Hepburn Shire. Daylesford, located around 108kms north-west of Melbourne, has had a sister-city relationship with Te Aroha since 2006. It was something that had been on the minds of event organisers Jeanette Cameron and Leann Foster too. ‘‘We’ve never watched the forecast as closely as we have this week,’’ Foster said. ‘‘We’ve had a few sleepless nights.’’ Luckily while there, with around 200 festival-goers, the rain held and the crowd were tucking into picnics and drinks as the soft sounds of jazz music from a live trio wafted across the scenic Oak Lodge grounds.
