Old Soldier W alter George Stonehouse was a Thornaby man who joined the army at a young age and served for 28 years in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps where he became a corporal. As ex service personnel will no doubt know, the RAOC was responsible for repair and supply (mainly munions) and so no doubt George was posted to hotspots far and wide and would have been near to where bullets were flying. George also spent me nearer nearer home in more sedate surroundings at Grobbendonk, Belgium, where he began to write his memoirs of his me as a boy in Thornaby on Tees and his 28 years army service. Bader Primary School WELCOME BACK TO BADER EVERYONE! On Thursday 3rd September 2020, Bader Primary School opened its doors once more and welcomed back ALL of our children. Aer such a long me away from school for some, it was wonderful to see everybody return, and with such posive atudes. Although school runs slightly differently now with staggered start and end mes and year group bubbles, our Bader Values (Being happy, Aiming high, Determinaon, Excellence and Respect) remain. It has been great to see children back through the school gates with huge smiles, demonstrang our ‘being happy’ value. We have also seen huge determinaon from children wanng to succeed with their learning. While it may have felt strange returning to school at first, our morning roune with breakfast bagels and Wake and Shake have helped to start each day posively. Our assemblies are sll occurring, although now in a different format via Zoom. It is great to see everyone on the interacve whiteboards in the classroom! 18
Bader Primary School PSHE In each classroom, we have introduced a worry box that gives children the opportunity to write down any worries or concerns they may have. Then, these are discussed and addressed in our daily bubble me. Aer such a strange me for everyone, it has been great to have the chance to discuss what it has been like for others to live through this event. Some of the lovely acvies have included, wring down a worry on a balloon and then leng it go and making posive affirmaon chaerboxes. Rights Respecng Schools The Rights Respecng Schools website states, “Unicef works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecng Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, acve cizens.” Aer receiving our Bronze award back in May, we are now connuing our Rights Respecng School journey and are hoping to achieve Silver award next March. Children are currently focussing on Arcle 29, ‘goals of educaon’ and compleng tasks to support their understanding of this right. 19
Bader Primary School Curriculum Children have returned to connue with our broad and balanced curriculum. Alongside our Maths and English learning, we have begun to learn about a range of excing topics, including ‘Rocks’, ‘World War 1’, ‘the Romans’ and ‘Autumn’. We are also connuing to be healthy and parcipang in weekly P.E lessons with our new Sports Coach, Mr Buers. He has devised a new P.E curriculum focussing on minimum contact within lessons. He is part of the Bader family already! Shortly, Mr Buers will be re- introducing our excing aer school clubs within the bubbles. Aer such a long me without lots of children in the building, we are once again feeling like a school, a community, a Bader family. Welcome back everyone! 20
Christ the King Catholic Primary School Welcome to our Early Years seng at Christ the King Over the summer our Nursery and Recepon classrooms have been refurbished, providing the youngest children at Christ the King with a smulang learning environment. Our areas of provision have been developed to promote children’s independence and decision making, creang spaces where our children learn and play together. Our outdoor classroom has also been redeveloped to provide lots of fun opportunies for children to learn and play on a larger scale. We have areas to explore and invesgate, including our nature area, with our very popular mud kitchen where we enjoy experimenng with nature’s finest ingredients! 22
Christ the King Catholic Primary School Community Champions at Christ the King At Christ the King, we are passionate about our community and Thornaby. The children of Christ the King enjoy contribung to the life of the wider community in many different ways. Staff, Children and Governors all try their best to serve our community as ‘Community Champions’. Our school choir sing at care homes and the local shopping centre at Christmas me. Our school community is involved in creang Christmas hampers to support less fortunate families in our local area. Children make prayer cards and Christmas cards to be delivered to the elderly and housebound of our parish with a reminder that we are keeping them in our prayers especially during these challenging mes. A group of twenty of our children have been commissioned as ‘Mini-Vinnies’, a youth group linked to the St Vincent De Paul Society. These children represent their peers and they meet to reflect on the teachings of Jesus and consider ways in which we can help our school community to live out the Good News. Inspired by words from Pope Francis, when he reminded us that our world is a shared gi, not a possession, Our Eco warriors set a fantasc example of improving environmental issues. We are passionate about caring for our environment. We have taken part in lier picking and caring for our local area. This term, we are going to start growing your own organic plants and – hopefully – donang the produce that appears each harvest me. 23
Christ the King Catholic Primary School Welcome to Thornaby, Dimi! Christ the King welcomed Thornaby FC’s new star signing and Middlesbrough legend, Dimi Konstantopoulos, to school this term. It was an amazing experience for the children to talk to someone who lived his dream and achieved great success. Dimi talked to every class in school and answered the quesons of the excited children. In parcular, he shared his life story and how he was once a young child in school who dreamed of being a footballer. He worked hard, showed commitment and followed his passion, something that we would hope every CTK pupil strives towards. Our Year 5 and 6 children also got the opportunity to showcase their skills to the Greek shot stopper. Of course, it was a compeon to see who could score past him first! Children (and teachers) tried their hardest to beat Dimi! The Boro legend has faced some of the best strikers in the world but he couldn’t stop some of the Premier League worthy strikes from our children. His advice and coaching were also excellent, it has inspired some of our talented footballers to aim high. The day wouldn’t be complete without a penalty shootout! Dimi showed off some amazing saves but some superstars managed to beat the 6 foot 3 keeper. Well done! It was also a dream moment for Christ the King’s number one keeper. Dimi held a coaching session and gave invaluable advice on how to save a penalty. Christ the King would like to say a huge thank you. Dimi was a gentleman from start to finish and was excellent with the children. Welcome to Thornaby! Thornaby Cricket Club The view from the boundary... St. Patrick’s RC Primary School It’s Good to be Back! Our gates finally opened again for all our children this September and it was good to see the wide beams on faces-especially parents and carers. The long wait and months of home schooling was thankfully over. Jubilant parents skipped through the green gates on Lanehouse Road to safely dispatch their children back into our care. Although we were able to allow 150 children back in July, it was great to see all of the familiar faces back with us - some happy and some a lile apprehensive and unsure as to what to expect. Government guidance had all being put in place, Curriculum Recovery plans drawn up and one way systems mapped out, all ready to be put to the test and we have to say that the children have responded brilliantly. We are so proud of our children and their families for returning in such good spirits to us and how quickly they have readjusted to be back at school. Farewell Mrs. Bell The school bell rang me for the long serving Mrs. Bell. Mrs Val Bell had served as a classroom assistant and later school admin support for the last 38 years. Before that she was a parent and long before that a pupil at St.Patrick’s. For many years she was the face on recepon and the voice on the other end of the telephone and saw many coming and goings of children and staff. She saw three head teachers as well as hundreds of children and their families. Delivery drivers used to comment on the amount of years that she was with us. Many would say, “Are you sll here?” She was more than the lady in the office. She was totally commied to the children of St.Pat’s- aending lots of events and the many residenal trips to London, France and Holland. Val was the fount of all Thornaby knowledge- she knew everyone and their dog! We will miss having Mrs.Bell around school but will sure to keep in touch with her. Good luck Val and enjoy every moment of rerement looking aer good old George. A sacred space…the heart of our school As we return to school aer an usual me, we felt as though we needed to be in touch with the mindfulness of our children. They would need me to reflect and be sll as well as running around which is why we developed some quiet sacred spaces around school to allow reflecon and be in open space. Part of our school grounds have become “The Chroi” which is Gaelic for “heart” and it seemed fing as St. Patrick is our school patron to offer this place of solace and retreat so our children can be sll and listen to their hearts and minds. Part of the Chroi is an outdoor chapel where class reflecons and liturgies take place and there is a heart shaped grass mound and rocks where children can relax and enjoy nature and each other’s company. A surprise from Marcus Rashford Marcus Rashford has become a household name now not just for his football. During lockdown Rashford teamed up with the poverty and food waste charity FareShare to ensure that over £20 million raised provided food for children at school connue to receive free school meals. And in June, Rashford wrote an open leer to the government calling on them to end child poverty in the United Kingdom. Our Year 5 children decided to write to Marcus to thank him for his campaign and work for social jusce. It meant that many of our children received meals and vouchers throughout lockdown. It was with great excitement that we opened a parcel with a signed shirt from him. 27

Local Interest Champions I t seems incredible that it was 10 years in August since Allison Trainer lost her courageous fight against cancer and 8 years in the same month since Mick Eddy passed away. Allison and Mick were so similar in temperament and so fought tooth and nail for the town and community they both loved. Amongst Allison's many achievements in her years as a Borough and Town Councillor was the major role she played in the regeneraon of Mandale Estate.
