COMMITTEE INFO www.heritageeaglebend.com Should You Go to the Emergency Room, call 911, go to an Urgent Care or a Walk-In Clinic? from Bill Weinstein, MD for the Emergency Preparedness Committee HEBGC All too often, illness or injury appears out of the blue: You wake up in the middle of the night with intense abdominal or chest pain, you have weakness or shortness of breath or you fall down. When these situations occur, we’re often faced with uncertainty about where to go for care, especially if the symptoms seem severe and your regular doctor’s office is closed. While the answer is not always simple, knowing the difference between walk-in clinics, urgent care, emergency care or 911 and where to seek treatment could save your life in a medical emergency. There are distinct differences between these facilities. Urgent care or walk-in clinics help fill a vital gap when you become sick or injured, your regular doctor is not available, and you can’t wait for an appointment. Walk-in clinics offer convenient same-day care for minor illnesses e.g. mild flu-like symptoms, cough, congestion, sore throat or ears, eye redness painful urination or rashes without fever. Urgent care centers can treat vomiting or OLD TIMER persistent diarrhea, mild abdominal pain, wheezing, dehydration or flu-like symptoms by John H. Buck if you don’t quite need an emergency room. This was certainly not planned, and just happened; perhaps something that was meant to be! Our younger daughter and son-in-law moved from Flagstaff to Las Cruces last May. We decided that this was an opportunity for us to spend some of the winter and spring months away in warmer pastures. We celebrated a wonderful week in LC with them over Thanksgiving. The afternoon before our next-day flight home, Lindsay drove Toni by a small housing development near NMSU to check it out (about 10 minutes away from their home). One house stood out from the others! We met the realtor the next morning (before heading to El Paso), and had a tour of the 10-year old house. You can imagine I was not expecting to be impressed at all, let alone the thought of moving, but it was truly love at first sight for both of us. So, we have bought in LC and are selling here, with plans to escape the summer heat in LC and to appreciate the milder weather here in beautiful CO, enjoy our older daughter, Nicole, son-in-law, and two grandchildren, and keep in touch with you. You may see me at an HEBGC Community blood drive or two! You will agree with me that June has done a tremendous job of leading our very successful blood drives these past three years (Vitalant’s Sarah Miller and her blood drive staff are tireless and are much appreciated), and I am sure with your continued and dedicated blood donation support, that HEBGC will continue to be one of Vitalant’s premier Community Blood Drive Hosts in the years to come. We could not have been successful without the superb support of HEBGC’s management, leadership and behind the scenes staff who helped make it all work. It has been my pleasure and privilege to live and serve in our community with such amazing and talented friends! Thank you so much; I am going to miss you. 12
