Ensure accessibility to the socio-cultural space, to assert its presence in the centre of Luxembourg City was a major stake. A parallelepiped surrounds the amphitheatre which is recognizable with its continuous and hybrid form. The façade transparency from the first to the third floor underlines the presence of the amphitheatre from the street. Placed in a red box, hanging and sticking out from the roof, the amphitheatre is a strong image in direct relation with the street. The architectural language proposed is perfectly associated, by contrast, with the monumental character of the Municipal Circle which is then revitalized. The project’s first part was to make the building operational again in conformity with the new hygiene and security norms and then, link it to « Cité », the second phase enabling to rethink the lay-out of all the rooms, reorganize the offices and renovate the raised ground floor rooms around the great reception hall. 2 | Photo © Christof Weber 17

A new office concept has been created for the Swiss branch of a real estate development company, in consideration of the preservation of historical monuments. Elegance and generous proportions, together with an unusual and high-quality material mix and accentua ted lighting, distinguish the office areas and conference zones in a total of about 1000 sq. m. on four floors. The furniture and fittings were designed and individually installed on site by Landau + Kindelbacher. Regarding the architectural quality of the Bastei tower and the representative demands of the customer, a special material combination of black marble, brass, carbon and glass was chosen for the floors, walls and ceilings. As a reminiscence of the architecture of the 1950s, the classical materials are newly interpreted in their use, colourfulness and gloss value. The resulting spatial effect frames the view and allows the low room heights of the existing building to retreat into the background. In contrast to the black space continuum are the high-gloss furniture (highly polished brass) and the bright lighting channels. A speciality is the floor pattern with the brass seams as a visible, high-quality separation. The subject of ‘seams’ is mirrored again and again in the whole design – from the integration of direct and indirect lighting in the cooling ceiling to the special furniture. 2 | Photo © Ortwin Klipp 19

Jordan (more especially Amman) has appeared as a place where the light, strong, lively and omnipresent, expresses itself especially well when interacting with the material to create shadows which reveal the volumes. The town of Amman being built on a hilly site the buildings will follow the grounds forms and will be organized in a tight pattern to generate open spaces where take place gardens and shady zones. The stone ‘s omnipresence, conversing permanently with the vegetation, makes it a harmonious place strongly impregnated with traditional culture. Our site study corresponds well to this approach of the city: steep slope, East-West orientation, visual environment with a remarkable landscape quality. The combination of this site’s aspects enables to design a project respecting three themes: Anchorage, Material & Light. 2 | Photo © Daniel Moulinet 21

The complex comprises a rectangular base block, 35m high, and a tower of 130m. The lower two levels are accentuated as a transparent plinth, continuing the east side as a glazed conservatory connected to the existing buildings. This serves both as a windbreak and as a transparent entrance to the court at the back of the building which is laid out as a city garden. In the base block a large covered atrium is cut out of the volume, ensuring sufficient daylight in the deep office floors. With its stepped landscaped terraces the atrium lends openness and identity to this part of the complex which has less spectacular views. The design of the office floors is characterized by an open and flexible layout. This is made possible by limiting the load-bearing construction to the central cores and the exterior walls. Referring to the post-war architecture of Rotterdam, the façade grid is composed of prefab elements of natural stone and concrete composite. The facade of the tower is characterized by high vertical windows lying deep between the slender stone ribs. By cutting these ribs at a slight angle a subtle distinction between different sides of the tower is created, changing dependent on the direction from which one sees the façade. The building is certified BREEAM Excellent. 2 | Photo courtesy of de Architekten Cie 23

1 | Photo © Steven Massart 2 Office building Befimmo, Brussels In 2014 SVR-ARCHITECTS won a competition to thoroughly renovate an existing office building in Brussels. The challenge was to realize a contemporary, passive office building with a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certificate. To attain this certificate and to optimize the usable office area, it was decided to make a new structure of slender concrete columns and beams. The existing load-bearing façade elements were replaced by a light, high-tech façade. Using opaque elements and printing the façade gives alternating transparent and semi-transparent effects. At each level the façade line is shifted to create a fascinating play of volumes. The flexible office plans were created by moving the rear façade. These can be sub-divided for rent. In two places on the ground floor, part of the volume is removed. Two quality courts, which create a pleasant work environment, came in their place. By maximizing the transparent façade, the application of a very compact cool ceiling and the centralization of the services on the façade side, light and very flexible office spaces were made. At the main entrance an atrium was designed to emphasize the openness of the building. 2 | Photo © Steven Massart 25
