Welcome Welcome! We are delighted that you are here with us this evening for our Maundy Thurday service at Edmonds United Methodist Church. We hope you feel welcome and beloved as you worship with this community. The heart of our church is joining together in gratitude and praise. You are invited to join us Sunday mornings at 9:00 & 10:30 am in our Sanctuary and online. On the first Sunday of each month we share in Holy Communion, and whether or not you are a member of the church you are welcome as a full participant. Our Foundry service is a contemplative practice based community with Holy Communion offered at weekly gatherings on Sunday nights at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary. If you would like to connect with one of our pastors or learn more about the church, we invite you to fill out one of our Connect Cards. To fill one out, you can point your phone camera over the QR code below and it will take you to an online version, or you can find a physical card in the pew and leave it in your seat to be collected after the service. If you are worshiping online you can also find and fill out the online Connect Card by clicking on the link in the “Services” section of our homepage at edmondsumc.org. Connect Card QR Code Maundy Thursday Maundy Thursday is an alternative name for Holy Thursday, the first of the three days of solemn remembrance of the events leading up to and immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus. The English word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum, which means “commandment.” As recorded in John’s gospel, on his last night before his betrayal and arrest, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then gave them a new commandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34). This is why services on this night generally include the washing of feet or other acts of physical care as an integral part of the celebration. While John’s gospel does not record the institution of the Lord’s Supper among the events of this night, the other gospels do. This is why Christians have traditionally observed this night both at the basin (footwashing) and at the Lord’s Table (Holy Communion).

La Valée des Cloches Christina Siemens Maurice Ravel Welcome Pastor Ann Jacob & Pastor Joanne Coleman Campbell *Call to Worship Pastor Joanne A call to worship is a call to presence. We long to be fully present here, and to feel God’s presence here. Notice the space around us, the way it looks, smells, and sounds. With all our senses, we recognize a sacred space and our belonging in it. We gather as good creation, wonderfully made. We join our bodies into one body as we remember the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. *Opening Hymn As We Gather at Your Table Words: Carl P. Daw, Jr., Music: IN BABILONE, arr. Confession and Assurance Pastor Joanne Confession returns us to our bodies by reminding us that God claims us, exactly as we are. Through repentance, we name that which we have left undone and ask for the help of God and our community to seek repair, restoration, and renewal. Let us pray together our prayer of confession: Loving God, you pour out grace upon us exactly as we are, but we confess we are suspicious and react from fear of scarcity. You invite us to take our shoes off and receive the care our bodies need, but we sit on our heels. We sort bodies into worthy and unworthy ones to mask our insecurities. We reject and punish fat bodies, disabled bodies, transgender bodies, and racialized bodies— even when these bodies are our very own. God, remind us that we are made in your image. Help us learn to receive from your abundance so we can share all that we have with others. Let us see that the cups we longingly hold out are already full. May they overflow so that all will have enough! As he does with Peter in the foot washing, Jesus transforms our confusion and rejection into joy and connection. With God’s help and mercy, we can reciprocate abundance with one another and with Creation. In Jesus Christ we are loved and befriended by God. Thanks be to God.
