LLANDAFF CATHEDRAL EGLWYS GADEIRIOL LLANDAF CHORAL EUCHARIST 11.15 am Sunday 19th December 2021 The Fourth Sunday of Advent
Welcome to the Cathedral! It remains a legal requirement to wear a face covering during worship unless you have a recognised / acknowledged reason not to wear one. Hand sanitiser is available at the west door and at the south-east door. You can help us to keep everyone safe, by voluntarily completing a card with your contact details (one per household). This will enable us if necessary, to implement the ‘track and trace’ guidelines. You may print this order of service or follow it on a mobile device - if you are using a ’phone or tablet please ensure the sound is switched off. QR codes are available to help you find the order of service on your mobile device. Music before the service Fugue in A flat minor WoO 8 Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Please stand as the Procession enters. All sing: THE ENTRANCE HYMN Sing we of the blessed Mother Who received the angel’s word, And obedient to his summons Bore in love the infant Lord; Sing we of the joys of Mary At whose breast that child was fed Who is Son of God eternal And the everlasting Bread. Sing we, too, of Mary’s sorrows, Of the sword that pierced her through, When beneath the cross of Jesus She his weight of suffering knew, Looked upon her Son and Saviour Reigning high on Calvary's tree, Saw the price of man's redemption Paid to set the sinner free. Sing again the joys of Mary When she saw the risen Lord, And in prayer with Christ’s apostles, Waited on his promised word; From on high the blazing glory Of the Spirit’s presence came, Heavenly breath of God’s own being, Manifest through wind and flame. Sing the chiefest joy of Mary When on earth her work was done, And the Lord of all creation Brought her to his heavenly home; Virgin Mother, Mary blessed, Raised on high and crowned with grace, May your Son, the world’s redeemer, Grant us all to see his face. Words: George B. Timms (1910-1997) Music: ABBOT’S LEIGH © Oxford University Press Cyril Vincent Taylor (1907-1991)
Please remain standing. THE GATHERING In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Grace and peace with be with and keep you in the love of Christ. THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, merciful and gentle: to you be praise and glory for ever. Your light has shone in our darkened world through the child-bearing of blessed Mary; grant that we who have seen your glory may daily be renewed in your image and prepared like her for the coming of your Son, who is the Lord and Saviour of all. Blessed be God for ever. When the Lord comes, he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore in the light of Christ let us confess our sins. Silence is kept. The choir sings: THE KYRIES Kyrie eleison, Lord, have mercy upon us, Christe eleison, Christ, have mercy upon us, Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy upon us. Music: The Short Service Arthur Wills (1926-2020)
Let us confess our sins to God our Father. Heavenly Father, we have sinned in thought, word and deed, and have failed to do what we ought to have done. We are sorry and truly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us, forgive us all that is past and lead us in his way to walk as children of light. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you and set you free from sin, strengthen you in goodness and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The Collect God our redeemer, who prepared the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son: grant that, as she looked for his coming as our saviour, so we may be ready to greet him when he comes again as our judge; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A reading from the book of the prophet Micah. The LORD says to his people: But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. Micah 5.2-5a This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
The choir sings: THE MAGNIFICAT My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessèd. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations He hath showèd strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath fillèd the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promisèd to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. A reading from the letter to the Hebrews. When Christ came into the world, he said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt-offerings and sin-offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, “See, God, I have come to do your will, O God” (in the scroll of the book it is written of me).’ When Christ said, ‘You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt-offerings and sin-offerings’ (these are offered according to the law), then he added, ‘See, I have come to do your will.’ He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10.5-10 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
All stand for the Gospel. Choir Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. The choir sing a sentence. All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’ Luke 1.39-45 This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please sit SERMON
Please stand and say together: THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THE INTERCESSIONS We sit or kneel for the prayers. Each petition may end with: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. The prayers finish with: Merciful Father, Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. THE PEACE We stand and acknowledge each other’s presence. In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. Please remain standing. THE THANKSGIVING Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God for ever. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God for ever.
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. He is the one foretold by all the prophets, whom the Virgin Mother bore with love beyond all telling. John the Baptist was his herald and made him known when at last he came. In his love Christ fills us with joy as we prepare to celebrate his birth, so that when he comes again he may find us watching in prayer, our hearts filled with wonder and praise. And so, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your glory, and join in their unending hymn of praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hear us, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Through him accept our sacrifice of praise, and grant that, by the power of your Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine may be for us his body and his blood;
who in the same night that he was betrayed took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying, Drink from this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come in glory. Therefore, Father, remembering the saving death and resurrection of your Son we offer to you in thanksgiving this bread and this cup, your gifts to us, and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send your Holy Spirit upon all of us who share this bread and this cup. Strengthen our faith, make us one and welcome us and all your people into the glorious kingdom of your Son. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. AMEN.
As our Saviour taught us, boldly we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE COMMUNION The priest breaks the bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body for we all share in one bread. AGNUS DEI Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Draw near and receive the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, broken and given for you. Feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
Those who wish to, come forward to receive communion or a blessing. Only consecrated bread (the Host) will be offered in communion. Please extend your hands as far as possible. The Priest will pray words of blessing silently over children and those who are not receiving communion. During Communion the choir sings: Ther is no rose of swych virtu As is the rose that bar Jhesu. Alleluya. For in this rose conteyned was Heven and erthe in lytle space. Res miranda. Be that rose we may weel see There be one God in personys thre. Pares forma. The aungelys sungyn the sheperdes to Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gaudeamus. Leve we al this werdly merthe and folwe we this joyful berthe. Transeamus. Words: Trinity Carol Roll, Music: Anonymous Medieval (c.1420) Anonymous 15th-century carol
Once all have received, please stand to sing: THE POST COMMUNION HYMN Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice; Tender to me the promise of his word; In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; His mercy sure, from age to age to same; His holy Name--the Lord, the Mighty One Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight The hungry fed, the humble lifted high Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord To children's children and for evermore! Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) Music: WOODLANDS Walter Greatorex (1877-1949) Please remain standing. THE SENDING OUT Give thanks to the Lord for he is gracious: his love is everlasting. Heavenly Father, who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of the promised saviour: fill us your servants with your grace, that in all things we may embrace your holy will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Eternal God, comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken, you have fed us at the table of life and hope: teach us the ways of gentleness and peace, that all the world may acknowledge the kingdom of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand. THE BLESSING & DISMISSAL The Lord be with you. And also with you. Christ the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you, scatter the darkness from before your path, and make you ready to meet him when he comes in glory; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. As we await our coming Saviour, Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Organ Voluntary Fantasia uber ‘Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland’ Nicolaus Bruhns (1665-1697) The Organ Voluntary at the end of each service is part of the offering of our worship. Since then, restrictions on rehearsal space, use of the choir stalls and other COVID guidelines surrounding amateur music making have made it difficult for the choir to return. We are delighted that a choir will sing at this morning’s 9.00am for the first time and that a programme of phased return for choral music is planned. There will be differences from 18 months ago and challenges ahead for the choir, but we nevertheless rejoice that we can begin along this path. At least for the time being the choir will be split into two sections as we begin to build up the membership. The Junior Choir is for children aged 8-12 and rehearses on Mondays from 6.30-7.30pm in Prebendal House. Alongside them the more traditional Parish Choir of adults also meets to rehearse on some Monday evenings from 7.00-8.00 pm. These two groups will sometimes sing together and sometimes apart. It is our aim to build the membership of both groups over the coming weeks and months and to increase the involvement of the choir in services, but we need your help to do this! If you know of anyone who might be interested in joining either group, then please do put them in touch via stephemoore@llandaffcathedral.org.uk.
ADVENT APPEAL: a wonderful response! The official figures show that on the first three Sundays in Advent we collected no less than £1,774 for Crisis. This is a magnificent achievement, and there’s one more Sunday to go, so if you haven’t given already, this is your last chance. Collection buckets are at each of the main doors after the 9.00 and 11.00 services, and you can donate by cash or cheque payable to Crisis. Gift Aid envelopes are available on the Charities Table. Can we reach the £2,000 mark? It would be marvellous if so, and thank you all so much for your generous support. Sue Smith Altar Servers: under Covid regulations, only the clergy handle the communion vessels. However, it is now possible to have a crucifer and two acolytes to lead the procession. We have a children’s team of altar servers for the 9am All Age Eucharist with children taking turns each week. We now hope to restore a small team for the 11.15am service as well. Some of those involved before lockdown are still available, but not enough to form a rota as yet. Adults and teenagers who would be interested to take part in this are warmly invited to contact the clergy. Friends of Llandaff Cathedral: If you are a Friend of the Cathedral, you should have recently received by email or post a newsletter and information on Standing Order payments. Some people have found these in Spam, so please check if you are yet to see your copy. NEW YEAR'S DAY TOUR- MONDAY 3rd JANUARY at 10.30a.m. The popular Friends' New Year's Day guided tour of the cathedral is back. A good way to start the New Year, especially if you have visitors. There is always something to see that you have not noticed before! Please tell your friends and neighbours about the tour and invite them to meet our Secretary, historian Mr Arthur Impey, inside the west end of the cathedral at 10.30a.m. The tour is subject to Covid guidelines, so please bring a face covering. PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE In 2022, the Patron of the Friends of Llandaff Cathedral, H.M. The Queen, will celebrate 70 years as monarch and the Friends aim to mark this with the planting of 70 trees. Some of these will, we hope, be in the cathedral precincts, enhancing air quality and the environment. We are asking members of the Friends to make the number of trees up to 70 by planting one or more trees somewhere themselves, perhaps in the garden, at work or somewhere in remembrance. Planting can begin anytime now. A tree might be just the Christmas gift you have been looking for. The tree can be any size, and one of our North Wales members plans a rose tree in a tub, as her garden is small. Will you help, please? Let us know at friends@llandaffcathedral.org.uk and, if you would like to send us a photo of your tree, we may include it on our webpage. Llandaff Cathedral Choir Association: In addition to the Cathedral Christmas Cards available from the Cathedral Shop you can also buy Christmas cards in aid of the Choir Association. While proceeds go to the funds of the association, it is the Cathedral that benefits ultimately in that the funds help support the work of the Cathedral choirs. 'Cathedral Kids' Mother and Toddler group: We meet in Prebendal House each Wednesday of term-time from 9.30-11am. All babies and toddlers up to school age are welcome. We enjoy lots of play, chat, snacks, and a story and prayer together! Supporting refugees: The Diocese has launched a toolkit to guide individuals and churches on how best to support the people of Afghanistan and those arriving in Wales in the coming days. It also includes some context on the schemes to welcome Afghan refugees here in Wales (which are being run and coordinated by the UK Government) and a few words on advocacy around the Borders and Nationality Bill which is currently passing through Westminster (and will be a UK-wide policy). The toolkit can be accessed here. Orders of Service: Now that we are able to sing hymns, it is even more important for everyone to be able to access the order of service. Those who do not have access to a computer or printer at home (to print off the service from the Cathedral website and bring it along) nor to a smart phone (to use the QR code displayed in the Cathedral) are invited to request a personal printed copy. Please give your name and which service you attend (9am or 11.15am) and a named copy of the order of service will be provided for you at the back of the Cathedral each week.
The Friends of Llandaff Cathedral: Anybody interested in joining the Friends will find full details of types of membership and fees in the Friends Pages on the Cathedral website. An application for membership can also be downloaded from there. You can find out more about the Friends of Llandaff Cathedral by clicking here. COVID19 Guidance The latest Church in Wales guidance for dealing with the pandemic can be found here. Here are some of the key things to note: • We continue to display the QR code that links with the NHS Tracing App. • Hand sanitiser must be used on entry. • Facecoverings remain compulsory in public buildings. This includes the Cathedral. • Everyone attending will be invited to complete a ‘track and trace’ card. • Communion will be administered standing and in one kind only. • Ritual and ceremony will continue to be kept to a minimum. • No service sheets will be used – the order of service will be available online to print in advance and bring with you or to follow on a phone or other mobile device. They are also available through QR codes displayed at each service.
