Each week, we will review the lecture content, do exercises and work on difficult concepts. – To get the most out of it, you need to participate actively, even if virtual communication may feel awkward at first. 1

Final Exam NO TUTORIAL July (online) … Zoom Meetings https://zoom.us/ About: § Each week, a video conference will be held via Zoom to enable live communication between the tutor and the class. § Zoom has an accompanying chat option that can be used to exchange files, messages, ask questions or to shout out if one’s audio/video isn’t working properly. § Finally, Zoom allows the tutor to share her screen with everyone to display slides, exercises and videos, as well as draw on a virtual whiteboard. This almost completes our virtual classroom (but see also Slido and Moodle). § Students have the option of turning off their video/audio or using a pseudonym. However, students are strongly advised to not shy away from participating. Staying silent or hidden means that the tutor cannot assess and react to students’ needs in a proper and timely fashion. Let’s try to make the tutorial as close to a normal, face-to-face tutorial as possible! § Zoom is easy to use once you’ve tried it, so you don’t need to worry. We will use part of our first tutorial to explore it together, but, if you can, you are welcome to test it for yourself even before that. There are lots of video tutorials on the Zoom website. 3
Moodle https://moodle.leuphana.de § Moodle is a great platform for online or hybrid courses. § All tutorial materials, including readings, tasks, presentations, videos and so on will be available there. § The tutorial’s Moodle course will be divided into 13 Units, one for each topic in the course. § In addition, Moodle has a forum, where all students and the tutor can communicate. Simply start a forum thread to connect to the others. § The tutor will use Moodle to send important messages. These messages will also be sent automatically to students’ email addresses. What you need to do to register: § In order to register and get access to this course, follow these steps: – Go to the Moodle homepage (https://moodle.leuphana.de). – At the bottom of the page, search for the course. The title is: Linguistics in Practice for Language Teachers – Übung 3. Alternatively, you can use the course code: 1107831. – You will be asked to log in to Moodle. Use your myStudy username and password. – In order to register to the course itself, use the following registration key: intro-nosratirad – That’s it. Take 5 minutes to explore the course layout and functionalities but note that much of the content will be made available by the tutor each week. Slido https://www.sli.do/ § Slido is a browser-based tool, where students can ask tutorial/content-related questions and vote them up and down. This will allow the tutor to better react to students learning needs in real time. – Tip: Students can ask questions throughout the tutorial but it may also be a good idea to write down questions before the video conference in order to save time. – Remember: you can always communicate with the tutor during the Zoom conference as well § Second, Slido allows the tutor to create all sorts of questions and quizzes for the students, including multiple-choice (which is the format of the exam!), open-ended, rating questions and so on. This also makes it possible for the tutor to assess students’ progress in real time. § With Slido, you can type in your real name or a pseudonym or simply stay anonymous. So being shy is not a reason for not participating! How it works: § Slido is really simple. You don’t need to download anything or register. 4
§ Instead, the tutor will send you a code to the current Slido session. § You then go to the Slido website (https://www.sli.do/) and enter the code. Voilá! You’re ready to start posing and answering questions and watching the results in real time. 5
