13th August 2021 KHS News 2021-22 Mid-Summer Report Dear KHS families, What a week it has been! We have hosted our KHS Summer School and supported our Year 13 and Year 11 students as they have collected their A Level, vocational and GCSE results. With so much going on around the school, we wanted to send a short newsletter to all of our KHS families to share some of the highlights. Above all, I hope that your son/daughter is enjoying their summer holiday and we very much look forward to seeing all students back in September. On the final page of this newsletter, you will find a reminder of our key dates for our return to school. Follow us on Twitter Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support. @KingHenrySch Mr R Leitch, Headteacher (rleitch@kinghenry.org.uk) SUMMER SCHOOL SUCCESS We welcomed 150 of our new Year 7s to our KHS Summer School this week. Having missed out on the traditional secondary school induction as a result of COVID-19, our summer school has provided a wonderful opportunity for our new year group to adapt to their new school environment. Students have en- joyed an array of activities, including: Cookery—with students making shepherds pie, Eton mess, shortbread and pizza throughout the week. Science—students were taught about healthy hearts and how to save a life using CPR. Sports—activities included badminton, cricket, basketball, football and handball. Chelsea FC—Chelsea FC coaches ran two football training sessions. Motorbikes—students had the opportunity to learn about the servicing and maintenance of motorbikes There were also a number of sessions, introducing students to secondary school subjects, including Maths, Geography, Read- ing and Writing and RE. We also used this opportunity to assess students previous learning through some online assess- ments in our computer rooms. We also hosted a mini-Summer School for some of our Year 10 students, who also participat- ed in some of the activities above, as well as additional English and Maths and sessions in our school gym. It was wonderful to see students making the most of this additional time in school. For our Year 7s, they will always remem- ber some of their first experiences at KHS, and some of the lasting friendships that have been forged over the past week. A big thank you to Mr Flanagan, Assistant Headteacher, for organising the week and a big thank you to the KHS staff mem- bers who volunteers to support students in each activity. See page 2 for pictures of the week!
