I’m about to date myself. How many of you remember Paul Harvey and his radio broadcasts of “The Rest of the Story”? They were great stories that always had unexpected endings. When he got to that point in his stories, he would always preface the surprise ending with the words, “and now, here’s the rest of the story.” Last week, in honor of our Patron Saint, Maria Goretti, I wrote about how she was murdered by Alessandro Serenelli and on her deathbed, forgave him. Alessandro was convicted of the murder, but because he was a minor of nineteen, he was sentenced to thirty years in prison. He remained unrepentant and uncommunicative for three years. And now, here’s the rest of the story. A local bishop, Giovanni Blandini, visited him, and he revealed a vision he had of Maria handing him fourteen lilies (recall that he had stabbed her fourteen times). After this vision, he made a full conversion and was released on good behavior after twenty-seven years. He also declared that, indeed, Maria died a virgin. His first action was to seek Assunta, Maria’s mother, and beg her forgiveness on Christmas night 1934, which she readily granted saying: “If Maria forgave you, I can do no less,” and they attended Mass together the next day. Serenelli eventually retired to a monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, where he served as their gardener and porter, eventually being accepted as a lay brother. Alessandro died peacefully in 1970. Contrary to reports, he was not at Maria’s canonization, feeling that his presence would detract from the Little Saint’s honor. There is talk that his cause for sainthood might be put forward. In 1961, Alessandro wrote the following: “I'm nearly 80 years old. I'm about to die. Looking back at my past, I can see that in my early youth, I chose a bad path which led me to ruin myself. My behavior was influenced by print, mass-media and bad examples which are followed by the majority of young people without even thinking. And I did the same. I was not worried. There were a lot of generous and devoted people who surrounded me, but I paid no attention to them because a violent force blinded me and pushed me toward a wrong way of life. When I was 20 years-old, I committed a crime of passion. Now, that memory represents something horrible for me. Maria Goretti, now a Saint, was my good Angel, sent to me by Providence to guide and save me. I still have impressed upon my heart her words of rebuke and of pardon. She prayed for me, she interceded for her murderer. Thirty years of prison followed. If I had been of age, I would have spent all my life in prison. I accepted to be condemned because it was my own fault. Little Maria was really my light, my protectress; with her help, I behaved well during the 27 years of prison and tried to live honestly when I was again accepted among the members of society. The Brothers of St. Francis, Capuchins from the Marche, welcomed me with angelic charity into their monastery as a brother, not as a servant. I've been living with their community for 24 years, and now I am serenely waiting to witness the vision of God, to hug my loved ones again, and to be next to my Guardian Angel and her dear mother, Assunta. I hope this letter that I have written can teach others the happy lesson of avoiding evil and of always following the right path, like little children. I feel that religion with its precepts is not something we can live without, but rather it is the real comfort, the real strength in life and the only safe way in every circumstance, even the most painful ones of life.” God Is Good All the Time! All the Time God Is Good! Don’t forget, join us this Friday and every Friday at 3pm to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet on ZOOM. See the ad in our bulletin or on the parish website for details on how to join in. Hope to see you there!

Johnson, broses.christine@aod.org Michael Dunne For many of us, summertime is synonymous with relax time. Whether enjoying the local pool or going on vacation, life takes on a different rhythm in the summer months. A decline in church attendance during the summer usually leads to a dip in giving. Yep, you got it. The summer slump. God’s call on your life doesn’t stop just because attendance suffers a 30% drop during the summer slump. And online giving doesn't have to decline! Visit www.stmariagorettiparish.com and click on the “Online Giving” icon. Your financial contributions to the parish help as we continue to do God’s work. If donating in person, stewardship checks should be made payable to: St. Maria Goretti Parish Envelopes may be dropped in the stewardship box in church, mailed to the Parish Office Thank you for supporting our parish and its programs.
