BETTER TOGETHER The YMCA of Greater Moncton is working harder than ever to bring people together to ensure individuals of all ages, backgrounds and abilities feel connected and have access to the essentials they need to learn, grow and thrive. In fact, we’re on a mission to unite neighbours, friends and families from across the regions we serve, to foster a sense of belonging for all as we aim to build healthy, vibrant communities. Despite the ups and downs of this unpredictable world, the YMCA of Greater Moncton remains a constant and has for 147 years. The YMCA is a place that families like the Snows have considered a second home for many years. It’s a place where volunteers like Robert ‘Horton’ Despres are making a difference, by raising funds for vital Y programs. It’s a place where kids like Chase Prosser have found mentoring support that’s helping him to improve his social and academic skills. It’s a place where parents like Shannon Proctor feel good about leaving their children for safe, nurturing care. It’s a place where newcomers like Rowan Aljejawi feel welcomed and have the chance to integrate into their community. The challenges in our region are many and yet we remain steadfastly hopeful. We are confident in the impact of the Y’s transformational programs and services, made possible by our generous donors, volunteers, partners and staff. We invite you to join the YMCA of Greater Moncton in building a community of belonging. Zane Korytko – CEO Kim Christie-Gallant – Board Chair
I f you had to sum up the impact YMCA For a quarter-century, Horton served volunteer Robert ‘Horton’ Despres has had on the committee that organized the on his community for the past 25 years, YMCA of Greater Moncton’s annual Charity Golf Tournament, for most of THE ANSWER that time as its chair, including during the silver-anniversary event held in WOULD BE SIMPLE: June 2017 at Royal Oaks Golf Course. A HOLE-IN-ONE. “Bernard Cyr and Claude Savoie got involved with the Y many years ago and felt a golf tournament would be a good way to raise the profile of the charity,” says Horton. “They asked me to chair the event and I agreed. Once we got our committee going, it was fantastic. The group was made up of community-minded people and we had a lot of fun in support of a good cause.” In 2017, the tournament raised $40,000, bringing to $490,000 the amount collected since the event began. Proceeds initially went to build a new YMCA to replace an aging facility on Highfield Street. Once the YMCA on War Veterans Avenue was completed in 2004, funds raised went to the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign. We believe a person’s income should never be an obstacle to his or her health and well-being. The Strong Kids Campaign allows us to level the playing field for low-income families and individuals by removing financial barriers to Y activities and services. “It’s been extremely satisfying for me to help the YMCA of Greater Moncton and to know the direct impact the golf tournament fundraising has made in our community,” says Despres. “One of my aunts worked at the old Y on Highfield Street so I knew a long time ago that the YMCA was much more than a gym. It does so many good things. I’m happy to have helped to make a difference.”
IT’S A LONG WAY FROM BULGARIA TO MONCTON but little Emir Proctor seems to be adjusting just fine, thanks in part to the YMCA of Greater Moncton. The four-year-old boy was adopted from the European country in 2016 by Shannon and Dan Proctor of Moncton and started enjoying the Y’s full-time, licensed childcare program after his mom’s parental leave ended. “The childcare has been wonderful for Emir,” says Shannon Proctor, a neonatal intensive care unit nurse at the Moncton Hospital who is also completing her studies to become a nurse practitioner. “He’s a very easy-going, social little boy. The program at the Y has helped him to socialize well and also helped him with his speech.” Choosing a childcare provider is a big decision so it helped that Shannon had a friend whose children already took part in the Y’s safe, nurturing program, which helps little ones learn to build healthy relationships and develop school readiness skills. The largest not-for-profit childcare provider in Canada, the YMCA offers high-quality childcare programs for toddlers, preschool and school-aged children. Using the Y’s Playing to Learn™ curriculum, the program helps build a capacity for lifelong learning by creating quality learning experiences through play. “My friend loved the program and I always knew I wanted Emir to go here,” says Shannon. “In fact, I put his name on a waiting list a year ahead to get the spot. I really like that the program has access to the pool. The Y is also close to my work so it’s very convenient.”
ELEVEN YEAR-OLD CHASE PROSSER IS ALL SMILES... ... talking about the YMCA's Plusone Mentoring program. “I think it’s awesome,” says Chase. “When I first started, I was shy but now I’m talking to people a lot more and hitting all my goals. I even volunteer at my school’s breakfast club everyday. Plusone can really help people.” The YMCA Plusone Mentoring program brings together volunteer adult mentors and youth aged 10 to 17 who are experiencing challenges in their social and academic development. The younger participants are referred to Plusone by community partners including schools, social workers, police and other Y programs. Youth are matched with the adult mentor for one year, with the pair meeting weekly at the Y to participate in sports, leisure and capacity-building activities. Mentors receive specialized training and the mentor-youth relationship is guided by a program support worker. Chase was matched with 25-year-old family support worker Keisha Norwood, who was born and raised in Saint John. Keisha says she was lucky to have grown up with a supportive home life but admits she wasn’t always an ‘ideal’ child. “I grew up in an area where I was exposed to a lot at a very early age, such as drugs, alcohol and violence,” says Keisha, who now calls Moncton home. “I had my faults and made many mistakes.” When she heard about the Y’s new Plusone Mentoring program, Keisha knew she would be a great fit as an adult mentor. “I have experience with a lot of the same negative situations youth in the program face,” she says. “I chose to be a mentor for Plusone because I have an enormous passion for helping others. After a year of being a mentor, my heart has become full.” Since first meeting Chase in January 2017, Keisha says she is amazed at how far the Grade 6 student at Riverview Middle School has come. “Seeing the continuous progress Chase has made and all of the obstacles he has tackled and hearing all of the positive feedback from his family makes my heart smile,” she says. “I feel that way about all of the success and hard work I’ve seen from the other matches as well. This has been the most rewarding program I have ever been involved with. I truly believe Plusone is going to continue to help to push youth in the right direction, one match at a time.”
