Over the years, UCC has held strong to its roots as the University’s church, caring for the university community with a commitment to serve the students. When I was a student at TCU in the late 80’s there was a vibrant, thriving student ministry at UCC. The Disciples House, the college ministry of UCC located on Rogers Street, was the place to be for Disciples students! But in the last couple of decades, our commitment Rev. Dr. Russ Peterman, to student ministry has waned. And, sadly, as we Senior Minister have pulled back, large evangelical churches in our community have pushed all in. Which is why 400 students walk to a coffee shop just off campus each R ET U R N I NG Sunday for worship, and we welcome around 20 to TO OU R ROOTS: our sanctuary. ST U DE N T M I N IST RY Sadly, too, our ministry to middle-school and high- school youth has struggled to thrive as well. Once Back in January of this year, when we were still the youth ministry in town, several of our current worshiping online only, I made a stop for a bite students attend youth programming at other churches of breakfast on my way to the church one Sunday because, well, that’s where all their friends are. morning. As I waited in line for my bagel, I noticed Much of my call to ministry—which took place a flood of TCU students walking near campus, all right here in the sanctuary of UCC—is centered on headed in the same direction. There were groups ministry to students, and the first 15 years I served of them – 10, 8, 4 – some were alone. But all of them churches was doing youth ministry! I have a heart looked as they were dressed for church. A few of and passion for ministry with students. And here is them carried bibles. what I’ve come to believe: we cannot call ourselves Curious about where they were headed, I did what University Christian Church and not make student anyone in my position would do in that situation: I ministry—middle school, high school, and college followed them. Turns out that they were headed to students—one of our highest priorities. a local coffee shop that is home to a large college In a book called The Godbearing Life: The Art of Soul ministry from a congregation not far from here. Tending for Youth Ministry, Kenda Dean and Ron Over the next couple of days, I learned that they Foster remind us that young people are “looking own that coffee shop and host two worship services for a soul-shaking, heart-waking, world-changing there each Sunday morning, drawing close to 400 God to fall in love with. If they fail to find that TCU students each week. God in the church, they will most certainly settle For the first 60 years of our existence, UCC was the for lesser gods somewhere else… Youth look to University’s church. Out in the country, far from the church to show them something, Someone, any other local congregations, the faculty, staff capable of turning their lives inside out and the and students would all gather together for worship world upside down. But most of the time we in the each Sunday in the college chapel. church have offered them pizza.” 4
If we are going to be faithful to our roots while laying the foundation for our children’s children, we must be a community of faith committed to feeding our young people with that which will enable them to grow into strong, mature people of faith! This summer, with some turnover in our youth ministry staff, our church leadership made a commitment to reimagine and restructure our ministry to students. As I write this, we are in the midst of a search for the next right person to serve as our Minister to Students. We will not stop until we find the right candidate that is innovative, creative, and passionate about shepherding students and their families. We’ll find someone who is dynamic and able to grow collaborative relationships with the TCU Religious and Spiritual Life staff, the Disciples on Campus and other student groups. And then, we will give them the tools needed to grow this ministry and take it to the next level, including full-time ministry directors who will serve specific age groups within Student Ministry (Director of Youth Ministry and Director of College Ministry). As your pastor, but also as a parent of four teenagers, I want you to know that I am committed to doing all that we can at UCC to provide our students–and the students yet to come–an exciting, engaging, inviting place where they can have their souls shaken alive and their hearts turned towards God. I promise to do all that I can to have one of the most dynamic ministries to students around where they will be given not answers, but a safe place to question, wonder and discover the presence of God within them. You have my word and commitment. With gratitude and hope, Dr. Russ

UPCOMING WORSHIP SER IES DRAW NEAR The Art of Advent Advent is about preparing ourselves to give attention to God’s great gift, Jesus Christ. Sometimes we have difficulty believing we will see anything new. After all we know the story. We’ve heard it year after year. What could we possibly see or hear that we have not seen and heard before? This year, our hope will be to reawaken the wonder and beauty of the season of advent through the eyes and ears of artists who have gifted us with paintings, sculptures, music, movies and more, that draw us into the wonder of the Christmas story and the beauty of God’s love for all creation. That same God calls each of us, too, to bring hope and transformation to the world. In this series we’ll look at how to hear and respond to the unique call God is placing on your life.
