LATAM MAGAZINE OF THE EDMUND RICE NETWORK CONGREGATION OF ARGENTINA • BOLIVIA • PERU • URUGUAY CHRISTIAN BROTHERS MAY – JUNE 2019
We are a network of organizations, groups and individuals across the world seeking to continue the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice. / We gather around three core values: Presence, Compassion and Liberation. / As a young man, Edmund Rice, with a group of friends formed a little Gospel community. They shared prayer and spiritual reading, and they combined this with active outreach to the destitute, street children, orphans, prisoners, slaves and immigrants. / Today, living out of a new consciousness of interconnection, groups of people inspired by the story of Edmund's life in Latin America form small communities stepping outside their comfort zones in respectful service. We seek to make a difference to the lives of marginalized people through compassionate presence and mutual transformation. / There are a diverse number of ways of becoming involved in the Network: Joining the Christian Brothers, getting involved as a participant in some of the groups, becoming a volunteer for a period of time, becoming a partner in fundraising for our development projects. 2 LATAM MAY – JUNE 2019

FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM Happy Blessed Edmund Rice Day! I n the only authentic portrait we have of the Founder – painted at the request of the General Chapter of 1838 and, according to the members of the Congregation, a good portrait, which is currently in the community of Carrick-on-Suir, we can see his hand resting on a Bible, a voluminous copy: the founder’s entire hand wraps around the broad back and a good part of his forearm is in contact with the thick leather paste… There is no reason to doubt that it is the same Bible acquired by the Founder in 1791…" R. C. Hill, “Edmund Rice”, Our Studies, 39, 1966. p.41 At the time of the portrait, that Bible had been in Edmund’s possession for 47 years and it accompanied him until his death, six years later. It is the same Bible treasured in the Congregational Archives of the Brothers, now in Dublin, with the hand marks of Edmund’s favorite quotes, especially those that correspond to the proper use of richness, a subject that attracted Edmund from his years as a wealthy merchant. Having a bedside book for more than fifty years, nowadays it seems to us a habit contrary to the practice of acquiring and discarding, buying and immediately wishing to get something more modern and more technologically elaborate. Edmund was born more than two centuries ago, and it is not fair to make comparisons with the value and use of the objects we make today; nevertheless, we can affirm that the noble, wise and beautiful things in life are the product of giving our hearts to them for many years. A family, a marriage, a school, a religious vocation, all of them preserved with affection for several decades, are living lessons of daily offerings, thousands of daily encounters, purified feelings by the ideal that holds them together. On this day that the Universal Church remembers Blessed Edmund, let us celebrate the non- fluctuating and valuable of our commitments in the evangelization of children and youth. In spite of the small difficulties that appear every day in the routines of our plans and projects, let us be sure that we are grounded in the solid faith of Edmund in Jesus, discovered every day in his encounters with the Living Word. Edmund’s voluminous Bible is worn out by the thousands of times that he went through its pages anxious to find a Word of Light. Let us not get tired of enlightening our families, communities, educational works and projects with Edmund’s inspired life. Happy Edmund’s Feast Day to all the members of the Edmund Rice Network in Latin America and beyond. Kevin, Paul and Hugo LAR Leadership Team 6 LATAM MAY – JUNE 2019
