Deadlines Issue deadlines at the start of Grade 11 Make the deadlines a lot earlier than the actual university deadlines; this will give you a window of time to problem solve, write references etc. plus it helps the ‘last minuters’ amongst your students Early UCAS Applications due September 6th (Oct 15th) Regular UCAS applications due October 17th (Jan 15th) US/Canada applications due November 14th (Jan 1st/15) E mail deadlines to students/parents, upload to website, put on Bulletin Board 12/2/2013 Jeremy Handcock

UCAS Apps timeline Grade 12 August – Take students into Computer Lab and walk them through the UCAS Application – Personal details, Choices and Education Sections. September onwards - When students complete their app they bring their ‘Course Requirements Form’ to me for checking 12/2/2013 Jeremy Handcock
UCAS Apps process ‘Course Requirements Form’ Students list all 5 courses and list the points needed + they must list their Uni Predicted Grades Counselor checks to see if they are making realistic choices. If not, he suggests changes. If a student insists on ‘committing application suicide’, then the parents have to sign a disclaimer letter. 12/2/2013 Jeremy Handcock

A Day in The Life of a College Counselor The whole day is planned, in fact the whole year is planned and then something happens: students. They are what makes the day exciting, there is always something unexpected that walks through the door. It’s 17:41 on an early November day. I am putting the finishing touches to UCAS application no. 62 for this year, when there is a frantic knock at my door. “Office hours are over,“ I call out. “Please Mr. H, it will only be really quick. It’s super important.“ “It always is, I think…“ “My mom will kill me if I don’t sort this out,“ the voice pleads. “Come on in, this better be good,” I say.
