PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION To provide information about the Athletic Department for the upcoming academic year. Communicate expectations for our student athletes and parents/guardians. Provide valuable information that will assist our families with potential issues, conflicts and questions that may arise during the year. Assist with navigating the Highlander Athletic experience!

GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL MISSION The mission of Governor Livingston High School is to challenge students to explore, to excel, and to engage in a community of lifelong learners that fosters a culture of mutual respect, responsibility, and integrity, offering rigorous academic curricula and diverse co-curricular programs.
GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT The entire athletic department is build on the GLHS Mission statement! *The athletic department supports the “student first” philosophy and the athletic arena is an extension of the classroom. *We encourage multi-sport participation and a cooperative learning experience for our student athletes. *Being a GL Highlander is a privilege and not a right! Student Athletes will be held to high academic standards. Their behavior on and off the field/court should be outstanding. It is important to support your son/daughter in adversity and in success.

PARENT/COACH COMMUNICATION Student Athlete Athletes should approach the coach 1st regarding an issue. We would like to teach our student athletes to be an advocate for themselves! Parent Start with the coach by setting up an appointment- please be patient with the process. It is so important to start with your child’s coach to get direct feedback. If not satisfied, set up an appointment with the Director of Athletics and the Coaching Staff. All efforts will be made to procure an amicable solution. PLEASE CONTACT THE ATHLETIC OFFICE WITH CONCERNS OR QUESTIONS.
PARENT’S CODE OF CONDUCT We feel that parents play a vital role in the development of student athletes, therefore, our coaches believe in the following: 1. Be a positive role model through your actions to make sure your child has the best athletic experience. 2. Be a “team” fan and not a my child “fan”. 3. Playing time is not always an indicator of athletic success. 4. Communication is the key! Work to champion communication with your child and the coaching staff. 5. Show respect for all of our opponents and their supporters. 6. Enjoy the experience with your student athlete!!
COACH’S CODE OF CONDUCT We feel that coaches play a vital role in the development of student athletes, therefore, our coaches believe in the following: 1. Communicate to all stakeholders about your team expectations and goals. 4. Respect the integrity and judgement of all officials. 5. Show respect for all of our opponents and their supporters. Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat. 6. Strive for excellence in coaching skills and techniques through professional development. Have the passion to be on the cutting edge of your sports’ development. 7. Enjoy the experience of coaching the Highlanders!
FORMS AND DOCUMENTS The Sports Registration Packets are due to the Nurse’s Office: Winter Sports Friday October 12, 2018 Spring Sports Friday February 1, 2019 2019 Fall Sports Friday April 22, 2019 The Sports Registration Packets are located on the right side of the Governor Livingston Website: Sports Registration Link http://www.bhpsnj.org/Page/4979 The Berkeley Heights School District has moved to an online Sports Registration Packet procedure- 3 step process! You are responsible to complete and submit all required forms by the designated deadline!!

FORMS AND DOCUMENTS STEP 2 Click on the Physical Form (Print Here) Must have a hard copy- the NJDOE will not allow an electronic signature yet!
FORMS AND DOCUMENTS STEP 2 Physical Examination Form- completed by student athlete’s doctor, who has completed the Cardiac Module. Clearance Form- The required PPE must be conducted within 365 days prior to the first official practice in an athletic season. • The school Physician provides sports physicals in school during the month of MAY only. • Scholastic Student Athlete Safety Act states that prior to participation on a school-sponsored interscholastic athletic team or squad, each student athlete in grades six through 12 must present a completed PPE form. The required PPE must be conducted within 365 days prior to the first official practice in an athletic season. There can be no exceptions. • The Board of Education Physician must approve the PPE performed by a private doctor after it is submitted to the Health Office before the student will receive final clearance to participate. This process that can take up to 10 days.

FORMS AND DOCUMENTS After you have completed all 3 steps- you will receive an email notification that your son or daughter is cleared to participate! Please keep notification for your records! New procedure- so be patient!!
ELIGIBILITY The standards listed below, which are those adopted by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association will serve as the policy of the Berkeley Heights Board of Education for Athletics and other co-curricular activities. CREDITS To be eligible for athletic competition during the first semester (September 1 to January 31) a pupil must have passed 25% of the credits (30) required by the State of New Jersey for graduation (120), during the immediately preceding academic year. To be eligible for athletic competition during the second semester (Feb. 1 to June 30), a pupil must have passed the equivalent of 12 1 /2% of the credits (15) required by New Jersey for graduation (120) at the close of the preceding semester (Jan. 31). Full-year courses shall be equated as one-half of the total credits to be gained for the full year to determine credits passed during the immediately preceding semester. NCAA College Recruiting Our coaching staff can assist with the recruiting process. Please set-up an appointment to discuss your son/daughter’s post high school athletic plans. Please work with your Guidance Counselor on the NCAA Clearinghouse Requirements- new standards started in 2016! The NCAA Clearinghouse website is: www.eligibilitycenter.org Academics are important during your child’s freshman year, if they have aspirations of playing in college! Be pro-active now!
