APRIL 2019 ACCESS NEWS Empowering student success with the latest news and updates from York Technical College! My Student Ambassador Experience by Nialah Mu'min August of 2018: this was the beginning of my journey as a Student Ambassador at York Technical College. During this journey, I was given the chance to explore my identity on campus outside of being just a student; not only that but being an ambassador allowed me to further become a voice for my fellow schoolmates. As a student ambassador, one is constantly involved because the opinions and ideas of current students are greatly valued by the Student Leadership and Events program. With that being said, not only was I given the opportunity to share my own innovations, but I was also allowed to give an inside sense of the interests of other students, giving us all a say. One of the most meaningful aspects of being a student ambassador is being able to exhibit, challenge, and strengthen one’s leadership skills. Within the branch of leadership, there is also communication, conceptual skills, responsibility, and determination. Let me say, each of these skills was indeed tested but I’m especially grateful for each experience, as growth is an essential part of the program. While we’re on the topic of growth, I would love to mention the overall environment of a student ambassador. Personally, although I’m sure many could relate, the environment was always welcoming and in all honesty, truly diverse. Being a student ambassador is in short about enthusiasm, growth, and community; throughout my experience, I was allowed to implement each category in both a safe and supportive space. To add, our differences and diverse qualities as ambassadors were recognized and used as an influential factor for our teamwork. New ideas were always brought to the table, and it
APRIL 2019 My Student Ambassador Experience cont'd was really fascinating to discuss the contrast in perspectives as both students and individuals. And although I was especially confident before becoming an ambassador, being able to participate in this program only increased that confidence, especially in regard to people skills or human relations. A rise in confidence wasn’t the only element I gained from being placed within social and communal situations, I also made true connections and cherished friendships; even if they only are for a season. I’ve met people I never would have if it wasn’t for this program, and to say the least, I’ve genuinely enjoyed learning about and conversing with each individual. Overall, as this month is my last as a student ambassador, I hope I expressed how much I appreciate this leadership journey and opportunity. Considering that I’m an upcoming 2019 graduate, I’m ecstatic at the fact that I’ll be adding to my academic milestones; but even then, I’ll miss the discussions, social and institutional involvement, and friendships experienced as an ambassador. Between you and me, deep down, I wish there was a way to continue being a student ambassador without being a student. Regardless, I wish nothing but the best to the Student Leadership and Events program, student ambassadors (old and new), and every other individual that makes this successful program available for the campus.
