What I wish I knew for my first week
What does a course look like? A course may consist of lectures, seminars, online modules, as well as tutorials and workshops. Lectures and seminars start in week 1, tutorials generally start in week 2. In Semester 1, all our courses will be delivered in flexible and/or external modes: • Flexible courses use a combination of online lectures (either recorded or live), and in-person on-campus activities, such as tutorials, seminars, laboratories and workshops. • External courses offer all learning online for the whole semester Struggling with class sign-on: my.uq.edu.au/starting-at-uq BBusMan Orientation | Semester 1, 2021 #UQBusiness CRICOS code 00025B
Where can I find out what is going to happen in a course? All the details of what will happen in each course will be covered in the electronic Course Profile (eCP). Just search for the course code. This guide will tell you what learning resources you need, what activities are scheduled for each week, and how you are going to be assessed. Section 6. Policies and Guidelines has all the information and links you need... for understanding academic integrity, extensions, feedback etc. BBusMan Orientation | Semester 1, 2021 #UQBusiness CRICOS code 00025B
What do I have to do? We manage the scheduled activities and provide everything you need to study the course on the course Blackboard. It is up to you to prepare for class, complete any online modules or reading required to participate, schedule in time to complete assessments, and work with others in your class. BBusMan Orientation | Semester 1, 2021 #UQBusiness CRICOS code 00025B
What is class time for? Class time is a time where you can think about the knowledge being presented. It is time for you to ask questions, gain an understanding of the course content, and get some experience in using the knowledge. Knowledge and experience don’t just happen – you have to be an active learner. BBusMan Orientation | Semester 1, 2021 #UQBusiness CRICOS code 00025B
How am I going to be assessed? It depends on each course as to the best way to assess your learning. Be sure to check the eCP for details of when and how you will be assessed. Written Spoken Other Essays Presentations Simulations Reports Workshops Role play Case Studies Group experiences Exams BBusMan Orientation | Semester 1, 2021 #UQBusiness CRICOS code 00025B
What do I do if I don’t know what to do? Don’t panic – ask! Your lecturers, tutors, student experience officers, and student committee are here to help. Take it as a chance to upskill. What’s it really like studying online? “I have found studying online to be a great alternative to studying on campus. My lecturers and tutors provide excellent online learning experiences and they are very supportive and easy to communicate with. I have also been able to connect with my friends and peers through attending online social events such as trivia nights and guest speaker panels.” Madeleine Butler, recent BEL graduate Bachelors of Arts/International Hotel and Tourism Management 18
